A sensor failure will lead to sensor measurement distortion, and may reduce the reliability of the whole structure analysis. This paper studies the method of monitoring information reconstruction based on the correlation degree. For the faulty sensor, the correlation degree of the normal response of this sensor and the measurements of the other sensors is calculated, which is also called the correlation degree of reconstructed variables and response variables. By comparing the correlation degrees, the response variables, which are needed to establish the correlation model, are determined. The correlation model between the reconstructed variables and the response variables is established by the partial least square method. The value of the correlation degrees between the reconstructed variables and the response variables, the amount of the monitoring data which is used to determine the coefficients of the correlation model, and the number of the response variables are used to discuss the influence factors of the reconstruction error. The stress measurements of structural health monitoring system of Shenzhen Bay Stadium is taken as an example, and the effectiveness of the method is verified and the practicability of the method is illustrated.

The stress in structural steel members is the most useful and directly measurable physical quantity to evaluate the structural safety in structural health monitoring, which is also an important index to evaluate the stress distribution and force condition of structures during structural construction and service phases. Thus, it is common to set stress as a measure in steel structural monitoring. Considering the economy and the importance of the structural members, there are only a limited number of sensors that can be placed, which means that it is impossible to obtain the stresses of all members directly using sensors. This study aims to develop a stress response prediction method for locations where there are insufficent sensors, using measurements from a limited number of sensors and pattern recognition. The detailed improved aspects are: (1) a distributed computing process is proposed, where the same pattern is recognized by several subsets of measurements; and (2) the pattern recognition using the subset of measurements is carried out by considering the optimal number of sensors and number of fusion patterns. The validity and feasibility of the proposed method are verified using two examples: the finite-element simulation of a single-layer shell-like steel structure, and the structural health monitoring of the space steel roof of Shenzhen Bay Stadium; for the latter, the anti-noise performance of this method is verified by the stress measurements from a real-world project.

A strain-based automated operational modal analysis algorithm is proposed to track the long-term dynamic behavior of a horizontal wind turbine under operational conditions. This algorithm is firstly validated by a scaled wind turbine model, and then it is applied to the dynamic strain responses recorded from a 5 MW wind turbine system. We observed variations in the fundamental frequency and 1f, 3f excitation frequencies due to the mass imbalance of the blades and aerodynamic excitation by the tower dam or tower wake. Inspection of the Campbell diagram revealed that the adverse resonance phenomenon and Sommerfeld effect causing excessive vibrations of the wind tower.

Structural safety assessments are implemented based on measured data, but the limited number of sensors restricts the comprehensive acquisition of response information in large complex structures. A concurrent multi-scale model utilises global and local simulation characteristics to expand the insufficient measured data. Thus, good global and local simulation capability is necessary for structural health monitoring-oriented multi-scale model, and the updating of this monitoring model needs to consider the multi-type responses that are obtained from different structural scales. However, the existing methods usually integrate multi-type responses into a single-objective function, which cannot ensure the acquisition of the optimal parameters. Moreover, in common parameter screening method, the perturbation and threshold are set artificially, which causes a strong subjectivity, and the common polynomial response surface fits poorly for highly non-linear problem. Therefore, an updating method of the structural multi-scale monitoring model based on multi-objective optimisation is proposed. For the proposed method, a variance analysis based on the orthogonal experimental design is used to screen the unique significant influence parameters. The Kriging spatial interpolation technique is used to establish the approximate surrogate model between the response and its corresponding influence parameters. Simultaneously, the responses obtained from the global and local structural scales are used to define the sub-objectives of the multi-objective function vector in order to avoid the introduction of weight coefficients. Then, the multi-objective optimisation algorithm NSGA-II is used to obtain the optimal parameter values and realise the comprehensive updating of the initial multi-scale monitoring model. Finally, based on the health monitoring system of the large shell structure of the Zhuhai Opera House, the initial multi-scale monitoring model is updated using the proposed method. The structural dynamic characteristics and local stress obtained from the initial model, updated model and the real structure are compared to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper proposes a novel method to estimate the lateral displacement of high-rise structures under wind loads. The coefficient β(x) is firstly derived, reflecting the relation between the structural lateral dynamic displacement and the inclination angle at the height x of a structure. If the angle is small, it is the ratio between the structural fundamental mode shape and its first-order derivative without influence of external loads. Several dynamic experiments of structures are performed based on a laser remote sensing vibrometer and an inclinometer, which shows that the fundamental mode is dominated in the structural displacement response under different types of excitations. Once the coefficient β(x) is curve-fitted by measuring both the structural lateral dynamic displacement and the inclination angle synchronously, the real-time structural lateral displacement under operational conditions is estimated by multiplying the coefficient β(x) with the inclination angle. The advantage of the proposed method is that the coefficient β(x) can be identified by lateral dynamic displacement measured in high resolution by the remote sensing vibrometer, which is useful to reconstruct the displacement accurately by the inclination angle under operational conditions.
