Background: ChatGPT is a natural language processing model developed by OpenAI, which can be iteratively updated and optimized to accommodate the changing and complex requirements of human verbal communication. Objective: The study aimed to evaluate ChatGPT’s accuracy in answering orthopedics-related multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and assess its short-term effects as a learning aid through a randomized controlled trial. In addition, long-term effects on student performance in other subjects were measured using final examination results. Methods: We first evaluated ChatGPT’s accuracy in answering MCQs pertaining to orthopedics across various question formats. Then, 129 undergraduate medical students participated in a randomized controlled study in which the ChatGPT group used ChatGPT as a learning tool, while the control group was prohibited from using artificial intelligence software to support learning. Following a 2-week intervention, the 2 groups’ understanding of orthopedics was assessed by an orthopedics test, and variations in the 2 groups’ performance in other disciplines were noted through a follow-up at the end of the semester. Results: ChatGPT-4.0 answered 1051 orthopedics-related MCQs with a 70.60% (742/1051) accuracy rate, including 71.8% (237/330) accuracy for A1 MCQs, 73.7% (330/448) accuracy for A2 MCQs, 70.2% (92/131) accuracy for A3/4 MCQs, and 58.5% (83/142) accuracy for case analysis MCQs. As of April 7, 2023, a total of 129 individuals participated in the experiment. However, 19 individuals withdrew from the experiment at various phases; thus, as of July 1, 2023, a total of 110 individuals accomplished the trial and completed all follow-up work. After we intervened in the learning style of the students in the short term, the ChatGPT group answered more questions correctly than the control group (ChatGPT group: mean 141.20, SD 26.68; control group: mean 130.80, SD 25.56; P=.04) in the orthopedics test, particularly on A1 (ChatGPT group: mean 46.57, SD 8.52; control group: mean 42.18, SD 9.43; P=.01), A2 (ChatGPT group: mean 60.59, SD 10.58; control group: mean 56.66, SD 9.91; P=.047), and A3/4 MCQs (ChatGPT group: mean 19.57, SD 5.48; control group: mean 16.46, SD 4.58; P=.002). At the end of the semester, we found that the ChatGPT group performed better on final examinations in surgery (ChatGPT group: mean 76.54, SD 9.79; control group: mean 72.54, SD 8.11; P=.02) and obstetrics and gynecology (ChatGPT group: mean 75.98, SD 8.94; control group: mean 72.54, SD 8.66; P=.04) than the control group. Conclusions: ChatGPT answers orthopedics-related MCQs accurately, and students using it excel in both short-term and long-term assessments. Our findings strongly support ChatGPT’s integration into medical education, enhancing contemporary instructional methods. Background: Ankle fractures are common lower extremity fractures that pose a significant economic and social burden. This study analyzed the ankle fracture research literature between 2000 and 2021 to clarify the current status of ankle fracture research and predict future research trends. Methods: Publications related to ankle fractures published between 2000 and 2021 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. Then Bibliometric analysis and Visualized Study were performed by VOSviewer software. Results: A total of 2656 publications were retrieved. The number of publications related to ankle fractures is increasing every year. The top countries and journals in terms of the total number of publications, number of citations, and H-index ranking were USA and foot and ankle int. Lorich DG had the most publications in this field. University of Amsterdam's research group had the biggest number of publications in this field. Co-occurrence analysis clustered the keywords into seven clusters: survival analysis and prognosis study, internal fixation treatment study, treatment study of combined deltoid ligament rupture, treatment study of combined inferior tibiofibular ligament injury, treatment study of posterior ankle fracture, treatment study of postoperative traumatic arthritis of ankle fracture, and treatment study of ankle injury in children. Conclusions: The importance of ankle fractures is increasing year by year with the aging process, and the number of publications related to ankle fractures will not continue to increase in the future. Survival and prognosis studies, internal fixation studies, combined deltoid ligament rupture studies, and combined inferior tibiofibular ligament injury studies may become the future research hotspots in the field of ankle fractures.

Multifocal choroiditis (MFC) is multi-inflammatory lesions that occur in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and the choriocapillaris. Optical examinations are the major diagnostic methods to diagnose the disease. To examine patients with different types of MFC by multiple imageological methods. To summarize the imageology features of different types of MFC to make a medical examination guideline for clinician practices. All of the patients who included in the study received examinations of fundus color photography, infrared fundus photography, fundus auto fluorescence (FAF), fluorescein fundus angiography (FFA), and optical coherence tomography (OCT), respectively. Finally, imageology features of different types of multifocal choroiditis were summarized. A total of 51 eyes from 28 patients with diagnosed MFC were included in the study. These patients consisted of 10 males and 18 females aged from 31 to 49 (mean age: 41.5 ± 0.8). 23 patients had MFC on both eye whilst 5 had monocular disease. The MFC lesions were classified as active inflammatory lesions, inactive inflammatory lesions, inflammatory lesions secondary active choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and inflammatory lesions secondary inactive CNV according to literature reports and comprehensive fundus imaging examinations. Examinations via fundus color photography, infrared fundus photography, FAF, FFA and OCT indicate typical imageological signals of different types of MFC. These imageology tests can greatly assist the clinicians to identify the MFC and provide proper therapies.

Objective: The aim of the present study is to focus on the most popular winter sports programs, and to investigate the global research status and trends in sports-related injuries. Methods: The Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection database was chosen as original data and used for extracting publications on ice and snow sports injuries on 18 February 2022. Articles published in English between 1995 to 2022 were selected for this study. Results: Finally, for the topic search, a sum of 1605 articles were extracted and used for further analysis. The country and journal ranked first—in terms of total number, total citations and the highest H-index of publications—were the USA and American Journal of Sports Medicine, respectively. The affiliation with the most cited publications was the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. The most influential first author with the most citations (2537 times), the greatest average citations per article (65.05 times) and the highest H-index (26) was Bahr R. Articles were divided into five main clusters based on keyword analysis: injuries study, head and neck damage study, risk study, therapy study and epidemiology study. Studies related to epidemiology and brain damage in ice and snow sports will continue to be research hot topics. Conclusions: In conclusion, our study indicates that the ice and snow sports injuries research domain is more prevalent in North America and Europe. This study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of ice and snow sports injuries and provides hotspot directions.

Objective: The meta-analysis aimed to integrate the evidence of randomized control trials to estimate the efficacy of prophylactic tamsulosin on postoperative urinary retention (POUR). Methods: The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were searched through 1 March 2022 using predetermined keywords. Randomized control trials reporting the preventive efficacy of prophylactic tamsulosin against POUR were identified according to the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) guideline. Pooled risk ratios (RRs) were calculated using a random-effects model or a fixed-effects model based on the results of heterogeneity assessment. A meta-regression analysis was performed to explore the potential sources of heterogeneity. Results: There were 14 studies with 1102 patients in the Tamsulosin group and 1119 patients in the Control group. The risk of POUR was significantly lower in the Tamsulosin group (156/1102 [14.2%] vs. 238/1119 [21.3%]; RR=0.65; 95% CI: 0.50–0.86; P=0.002; Heterogeneity: I 2=51%; P=0.01). Tamsulosin administration was associated with a higher risk of adverse events (65/614 [10.6%] vs. 39/626 [6.2%]; RR=1.72; 95% CI: 1.19–2.48; P=0.004; Heterogeneity: I 2=0%; P=0.70). The meta-regression identified the mean age of patients as the only potential source of heterogeneity. Subgroup analysis showed that the younger patients (age <50 years) might benefit more from tamsulosin intake (RR=0.36; 95% CI: 0.19–0.70; P=0.003; Heterogeneity: I 2=49%; P=0.14). Conclusions: The current meta-analysis suggested that prophylactic tamsulosin contributed to the prevention of POUR, and younger patients (<50 years) might benefit more from this preventive regimen. Tamsulosin was also associated with a higher risk of adverse events.
