Mobile Health (mHealth) has a great potential to enhance the self-management of cancer patients and survivors. Our study aimed to perform a scoping review to evaluate the impact and trends of mobile application-based interventions on adherence and their effects on health outcomes among the cancer population. In addition, we aimed to develop a taxonomy of mobile-app-based interventions to assist app developers and healthcare researchers in creating future mHealth cancer care solutions. Relevant articles were screened from the online databases PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus, spanning the time period from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2022. Of the 4135 articles initially identified, 55 were finally selected for the review. In the selected studies, breast cancer was the focus of 20 studies (36%), while mixed cancers were the subject of 23 studies (42%). The studies revealed that the usage rate of mHealth was over 80% in 41 of the 55 studies, with factors such as guided supervision, personalized suggestions, theoretical intervention foundations, and wearable technology enhancing adherence and efficacy. However, cancer progression, technical challenges, and unfamiliarity with devices were common factors that led to dropouts. We also proposed a taxonomy based on diverse theoretical foundations of mHealth interventions, delivery methods, psycho-educational programs, and social platforms. We suggest that future research should investigate, improve, and verify this taxonomy classification to enhance the design and efficacy of mHealth interventions.

Patients at risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) must be identified early and precisely in order to prevent complications, save lives, and limit expenditures for patients and health systems. This study aimed to develop a simple, high-precision machine learning model to identify individuals at risk of developing CKD in the near future, using a novel metabolic index with or without creatinine. This retrospective cohort study used data from the MJ medical record database collected between 2001 and 2015 in Taiwan. We used Cox hazard regression to identify potential predictors, including the novel metabolic index, for use as variables in the models. To develop a machine learning-based CKD risk model with fewer variables, we performed several experimental analyses to combine interacting variables into subsets. Those subsets were used to train three models, random forest, logistic regression, and XGBoost, with or without adding creatinine. The study included 12,189 participants, 20% with and 80% without CKD. The most important conventional predictors of CKD are age and gender. The novel metabolic index, TyG-Index, TG/HDL-ratio and VAI, had stronger predictive power than the conventional risk factors. Without including creatinine data, the XGBoost provided the best predictive performance. After adding creatinine, the performance of all the models was excellent, outperforming both conventional indicators and existing clinical algorithms for CKD. Using novel metabolic index in machine learning-based CKD risk prediction can accurately identify individuals at risk of diagnosis with CKD in the next year, with or without including creatinine.

Background: Liver cancer is a global health concern, with overweight and obese individuals exhibiting an increased risk of its development. Understanding the interplay between obesity-related factors and liver cancer incidence is crucial for early prediction and intervention. Aim: The aim of this investigation was to construct and validate an extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) based machine learning model for the purpose of establishing a one-year liver cancer risk prediction system specifically tailored to overweight and obese patients. In addition, this study sought to compare the predictive performance of the XGBoost model with those of a random forest model and a logistic regression model, while also identifying the most influential predictive features for liver cancer incidence. Methods: A comprehensive retrospective analysis was conducted on MIMIC III data comprising 2,354 patients. To predict the risk of liver cancer development, three machine learning models were developed: XGBoost, random forest, and logistic regression. Feature selection was executed using a stepwise regression procedure encompassing both forward selection and backward elimination. Results: The stepwise regression technique unveiled 14 predictive factors for liver cancer incidence. Among the patient cohort, 132 individuals developed liver cancer within a year of follow-up, while 2,222 did not. Notably, most liver cancer cases occurred in male patients (60%). Statistically significant differences were observed between patients with liver cancer and those without, in terms of age, gender, total bilirubin, platelet, albumin, chloride, potassium, sodium, prothrombin time (PT) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). The XGBoost model exhibited an impressive area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 99%, Random Forest (RF) of 99%, and Logistic Regression (LR) of 90%. In a multivariate analysis, total bilirubin, creatinine levels, age, gender, ALT, alkaline phosphate (ALP), PT, calcium, and chloride emerged as independent predictors for liver cancer incidence. Conclusion: The XGBoost model demonstrated superior predictive performance when compared to the RF and LR models. If corroborated through prospective studies, the XGBoost model may prove to be a valuable tool for the early prediction of liver cancer risk in overweight or obese individuals. Such predictive capabilities could, in turn, facilitate the implementation of timely preventive interventions against liver cancer.

Background and objectives: Aortic valve and aortic vascular disorders represent a subset of cardiovascular conditions that can lead to heart failure. Aortic valve diseases, such as aortic stenosis or regurgitation, and aortic vascular diseases, including aortic aneurysms and aortic dissection, can contribute to impaired cardiac function and increase the risk of heart failure. This study aims to investigate the risk of heart failure in patients with aortic valve and aortic vascular disorders within 30-days of admission in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
