In this study, vermicomposted tannery wastes were applied in the organic cultivation of sweet pepper in a greenhouse. The effects of this organic matter addition on plant development and on the distributions of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in plant tissues and organs were assessed.

The leather industry (tanneries) generates high amounts of toxic wastes, including solid and liquid effluents that are rich in organic matter and mineral content. Vermicomposting was studied as an alternative method of treating the wastes from tanneries. Vermicompost was produced from the following tannery residues: tanned chips of wet-blue leather, sludge from a liquid residue treatment station, and a mixture of both. Five hundred earthworms (Eisenia fetida) were added to each barrel. During the following 135 days the following parameters were evaluated: pH, total organic carbon (TOC), organic matter (OM), cation exchange capacity (CEC), C:N ratio, and chromium content as Cr (III) and Cr (VI). The results for pH, TOC and OM contents showed decreases in their values during the composting process, whereas values for CEC and total nitrogen rose, indicating that the vermicompost reached maturity. For chromium, at 135 days, all values of Cr (VI) were below the detectable level. Therefore, the Cr (VI) content had probably been biologically transformed into Cr (III), confirming the use of this technique as an advanced biological treatment. The study reinforces the idea that vermicomposting could be introduced as an effective technology for the treatment of industrial tannery waste and the production of agricultural inputs.

Electroflotation (EF) is an electroanalytical technique applied for separating substances suspended in phase and is reported to be efficient for effluents and wastewater treatments. To date, there are no studies employing EF for the treatment of wastewater containing toxic organic compounds. In the present study, EF was tested as an electro-oxidative process to decontaminate wastewater containing the sulfonylurea herbicide chlorimuron-ethyl. To evaluate the value of EF, both the chemical and ecotoxicological efficacies were assessed in non-treated and treated wastewaters; the former monitored the herbicide and degradation products in the reaction medium through analytical chromatographic methods, whereas the latter comprised testing the 72 h growth of the green microalga Raphidocelis subcapitata and the 48 h lethality of the cladoceran Daphnia magna. Analysis by HPLC-UV allowed the monitoring of the electrochemical reaction, and a degradation mechanism based on gas chromatography–mass spectrometry was proposed. Despite the compromised herbicide structure, non-treated and treated wastewaters were similarly toxic for the microalgae Raphidocelis subcapitata and the invertebrate Daphnia magna. Even though EF did not remove the wastewater toxicity, the results indicate that toxic organic compounds are potentially oxidized by EF while signaling the need to combine chemical and ecotoxicological approaches to gauge the environmental sustainability of EF.

This work studied the auxin-like activity of liquid and solid hydrochar from aboveground corn biomass prepared using hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). Understanding the action of organic compounds in regulating plant metabolism is important to develop strategies to improve plant growth and production. Bioassays were performed by testing liquid hydrochar concentrations in the range of 0.0557-5570.0 mg carbon L-1; and solid hydrochar (via extracted dissolved organic matter, DOM) in the range of 0.026-2600.0 mg carbon L-1, using seeds of Lactuca sativa. SEM, ATR-FTIR, and Py-GC/MS were applied to assess the effect of HTC on hydrochar production/composition. Liquid hydrochar presented an intense bioactivity, completely inhibiting the germination of testing seeds at higher concentrations. Liquid hydrochar also was considerably more bioactive. Py-GC/MS allowed the identification of the molecules involved in IAA-like effects: carboxylic acids (linear and aromatic) and amino acids. The concentration of more bioactive molecules, rather than their simple presence in the hydrochar fraction, determined the bio-stimulating effect, besides an excellent linear regression between the auxin-like effect and the concentration of active molecules.
