Seed germination rate is one of the important indicators in measuring seed quality and seed germination ability, and it is also an important basis for evaluating the growth potential and planting effect of seeds. In order to detect seed germination rates more efficiently and achieve automated detection, this study focuses on wild rice as the research subject. A novel method for detecting wild rice germination rates is introduced, leveraging the SGR-YOLO model through deep learning techniques. The SGR-YOLO model incorporates the convolutional block attention module (efficient channel attention (ECA)) in the Backbone, adopts the structure of bi-directional feature pyramid network (BiFPN) in the Neck part, adopts the generalized intersection over union (GIOU) function as the loss function in the Prediction part, and adopts the GIOU function as the loss function by setting the weighting coefficient to accelerate the detection of the seed germination rate. In the Prediction part, the GIOU function is used as the loss function to accelerate the learning of high-confidence targets by setting the weight coefficients to further improve the detection accuracy of seed germination rate. The results showed that the accuracy of the SGR-YOLO model for wild rice seed germination discrimination was 94% for the hydroponic box and 98.2% for the Petri dish. The errors of germination potential, germination index, and average germination days detected by SGR-YOLO using the manual statistics were 0.4%, 2.2, and 0.9 days, respectively, in the hydroponic box and 0.5%, 0.5, and 0.24 days, respectively, in the Petri dish. The above results showed that the SGR-YOLO model can realize the rapid detection of germination rate, germination potential, germination index, and average germination days of wild rice seeds, which can provide a reference for the rapid detection of crop seed germination rate.

In China, fruit tree diseases are a significant threat to the development of the fruit tree industry, and knowledge about fruit tree diseases is the most needed professional knowledge for fruit farmers and other practitioners in the fruit tree industry. Research papers are the primary sources of professional knowledge that represent the cutting-edge progress in fruit disease research. Traditional knowledge engineering methods for knowledge acquisition require extensive and cumbersome preparatory work, and they demand a high level of professional background and information technology skills from the handlers. This paper, from the perspective of fruit tree industry knowledge dissemination, aims at users such as fruit farmers, fruit tree experts, fruit tree knowledge communicators, and information gatherers. It proposes a fast, cost-effective, and low-technical-barrier method for extracting fruit tree disease knowledge from research paper abstracts—K-Extract, based on large language models (LLMs) and prompt engineering. Under zero-shot conditions, K-Extract utilizes conversational LLMs to automate the extraction of fruit tree disease knowledge. The K-Extract method has constructed a comprehensive classification system for fruit tree diseases and, through a series of optimized prompt questions, effectively overcomes the deficiencies of LLM models in providing factual accuracy. This paper tests multiple LLM models available in the Chinese market, and the results show that K-Extract can seamlessly integrate with any conversational LLM model, with the DeepSeek model and the Kimi model performing particularly well. The experimental results indicate that LLM models have a high accuracy rate in handling judgment tasks and simple knowledge Q&A tasks. The K-Extract method is simple, efficient, and accurate, and can serve as a convenient tool for knowledge extraction in the agricultural field.

Pigs play vital roles in the food supply, economic development, agricultural recycling, bioenergy, and social culture. Pork serves as a primary meat source and holds extensive applications in various dietary cultures, making pigs indispensable to human dietary structures. Manual pig counting, a crucial aspect of pig farming, suffers from high costs and time-consuming processes. In this paper, we propose the PDC-YOLO network to address these challenges, dedicated to detecting pigs in complex farming environments for counting purposes. Built upon YOLOv7, our model incorporates the SPD-Conv structure into the YOLOv7 backbone to enhance detection under varying lighting conditions and for small-scale pigs. Additionally, we replace the neck of YOLOv7 with AFPN to efficiently fuse features of different scales. Furthermore, the model utilizes rotated bounding boxes for improved accuracy. Achieving a mAP of 91.97%, precision of 95.11%, and recall of 89.94% on our collected pig dataset, our model outperforms others. Regarding technical performance, PDC-YOLO exhibits an error rate of 0.002 and surpasses manual counting significantly in speed.

Genomic selection serves as an effective way for crop genetic breeding, capable of significantly shortening the breeding cycle and improving the accuracy of breeding. Phenotype prediction can help identify genetic variants associated with specific phenotypes. This provides a data-driven selection criterion for genomic selection, making the selection process more efficient and targeted. Deep learning has become an important tool for phenotype prediction due to its abilities in automatic feature learning, nonlinear modeling, and high-dimensional data processing. Current deep learning models have improvements in various aspects, such as predictive performance and computation time, but they still have limitations in capturing the complex relationships between genotype and phenotype, indicating that there is still room for improvement in the accuracy of phenotype prediction. This study innovatively proposes a new method called DeepAT, which mainly includes an input layer, a data feature extraction layer, a feature relationship capture layer, and an output layer. This method can predict wheat yield based on genotype data and has innovations in the following four aspects: (1) The data feature extraction layer of DeepAT can extract representative feature vectors from high-dimensional SNP data. By introducing the ReLU activation function, it enhances the model’s ability to express nonlinear features and accelerates the model’s convergence speed; (2) DeepAT can handle high-dimensional and complex genotype data while retaining as much useful information as possible; (3) The feature relationship capture layer of DeepAT effectively captures the complex relationships between features from low-dimensional features through a self-attention mechanism; (4) Compared to traditional RNN structures, the model training process is more efficient and stable. Using a public wheat dataset from AGT, comparative experiments with three machine learning and six deep learning methods found that DeepAT exhibited better predictive performance than other methods, achieving a prediction accuracy of 99.98%, a mean squared error (MSE) of only 28.93 tones, and a Pearson correlation coefficient close to 1, with yield predicted values closely matching observed values. This method provides a new perspective for deep learning-assisted phenotype prediction and has great potential in smart breeding.

The intelligent acquisition of phenotypic information on male tassels is critical for maize growth and yield assessment. In order to realize accurate detection and density assessment of maize male tassels in complex field environments, this study used a UAV to collect images of maize male tassels under different environmental factors in the experimental field and then constructed and formed the ESG-YOLO detection model based on the YOLOv7 model by using GELU as the activation function instead of the original SiLU and by adding a dual ECA attention mechanism and an SPD-Conv module. And then, through the model to identify and detect the male tassel, the model’s average accuracy reached a mean value (mAP) of 93.1%; compared with the YOLOv7 model, its average accuracy mean value (mAP) is 2.3 percentage points higher. Its low-resolution image and small object target detection is excellent, and it can be more intuitive and fast to obtain the maize male tassel density from automatic identification surveys. It provides an effective method for high-precision and high-efficiency identification of maize male tassel phenotypes in the field, and it has certain application value for maize growth potential, yield, and density assessment.

The current research on the change of homesteads has rarely combined spatial information, and no expansion research has been found with a scale as detailed as the level of the homestead plots. Understanding the changing rules of homesteads expansion and its influencing factors are important to homestead reform, optimization of village layout, and cultivated land protection. In order to explore the direction, level, and spatial pattern of homesteads expansion from 2010 to 2020 and the influencing factors, by taking six villages in Deqing County as an example, this research proposed a tract division scheme based on multidistance spatial clustering and intersecting area index and used homesteads expansion index and geographical detector. The results showed that (1) 83.3% of the villages had a decreasing trend of homesteads expansion, and half of the villages’ homesteads remained unchanged in their distribution direction. (2) The average order of factors influencing the expansion of homesteads was: distance from road > altitude > slope > policy restriction > distance from water area > slope aspect. This study helps to understand the spatio-temporal features of homesteads expansion in small-scale areas, provides an empirical reference for deepening homesteads reform and policy formulation, and also provides new methods for quantitative research on homesteads expansion.
