The current research on the change of homesteads has rarely combined spatial information, and no expansion research has been found with a scale as detailed as the level of the homestead plots. Understanding the changing rules of homesteads expansion and its influencing factors are important to homestead reform, optimization of village layout, and cultivated land protection. In order to explore the direction, level, and spatial pattern of homesteads expansion from 2010 to 2020 and the influencing factors, by taking six villages in Deqing County as an example, this research proposed a tract division scheme based on multidistance spatial clustering and intersecting area index and used homesteads expansion index and geographical detector. The results showed that (1) 83.3% of the villages had a decreasing trend of homesteads expansion, and half of the villages’ homesteads remained unchanged in their distribution direction. (2) The average order of factors influencing the expansion of homesteads was: distance from road > altitude > slope > policy restriction > distance from water area > slope aspect. This study helps to understand the spatio-temporal features of homesteads expansion in small-scale areas, provides an empirical reference for deepening homesteads reform and policy formulation, and also provides new methods for quantitative research on homesteads expansion.

The basic information survey on homesteads requires understanding the shape of homesteads, and the shape of the homesteads based on the spatial location can reflect information such as their outline and regularity, but the current shape classification of rural homesteads at the parcel scale lacks analytical methods. In this study, we endeavor to explore a classification model suitable for characterizing homestead shapes at the parcel scale by assessing the impact of various research methods. Additionally, we aim to uncover the evolutionary patterns in homestead shapes. The study focuses on Yangdun Village, located in Deqing County, Zhejiang Province, as the research area. The data utilized comprise Google Earth satellite imagery and a vector layer representing homesteads at the parcel scale. To classify the shapes of homesteads and compare classification accuracy, we employ a combination of methods, including the fast Fourier transform (FFT), Hu invariant moments (HIM), the Boyce and Clark shape index (BCSI), and the AlexNet model. Our findings reveal the following: (1) The random forest method, when coupled with FFT, demonstrates the highest effectiveness in identifying the shape categories of homesteads, achieving an average accuracy rate of 88.6%. (2) Combining multiple methods does not enhance recognition accuracy; for instance, the accuracy of the FFT + HIM combination was 88.4%. (3) The Boyce and Clark shape index (BCSI) proves unsuitable for classifying homestead shapes, yielding an average accuracy rate of only 58%. Furthermore, there is no precise numerical correlation between the homestead category and the shape index. (4) It is noteworthy that over half of the homesteads in Yangdun Village exhibit rectangular-like shapes. Following the “homesteads reform”, square-like homesteads have experienced significant vacating, resulting in a mixed arrangement of homesteads overall. The research findings can serve as a methodological reference for the investigation of rural homestead shapes. Proficiency in homestead shape classification holds significant importance in the realms of information investigation, regular management, and layout optimization of rural land.

Radiation use efficiency (RUE) is closely associated with cotton biomass and yield, yet the synergistic regulation of phenotypic structure and physiological potential remains unclear. A field experiment (2024–2025) in Anyang, China, utilized three independent trials: six sowing dates (from 12 April to 12 May at 6-day intervals, S1–S6), six planting densities (1.5, 3.3, 5.1, 6.9, 8.7, and 10.5 × 104 plants·ha−1, D1–D6), and ten cultivars with distinct architectures (V1–V10). Feature importance and structural relationships were quantified via random forest (RF) and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Results indicated that delaying sowing reduced true leaf number (TLN) and plant height (PH), with the April 24 sowing (S3) optimizing leaf area index (LAI, 2.57) and light interception rate (iPAR, 0.61). Increasing density significantly enhanced population-level LAI, above-ground biomass, and RUE, despite a progressive decline in TLN. Among cultivars, CCRI 60 (V6) exhibited superior structural traits (PH: 72.94 cm; iPAR: 0.61), while CCRI 113 (V8) exhibited the highest maximum carboxylation rate (Vcmax, 88.9 μmol·m−2·s−1) and RUE (4.88 g·MJ−1). Across the comprehensive dataset (integrating the density, sowing date, and cultivar trials), iPAR exhibited the highest relative importance (42.01%) for RUE variation, while associated structural traits (PH, LAI, TLN) yielded a cumulative relative importance of 41.69%. RUE was strongly associated with biomass accumulation (path coefficient > 0.97), which subsequently optimized yield components. Conversely, within the cultivar-comparison subset, the relative importance of iPAR decreased to 17.95%, while Vcmax rose significantly to 19.20%. PLS-SEM indicated that canopy structure exerted a significant negative association with photosynthetic potential (Vcmax, Jmax) within this cultivar subset (path coefficient ≈ −0.51), whereas enhanced physiological potential was positively associated with resource allocation to yield components (path coefficient ≈ 0.57). Consequently, mitigating the inherent trade-off between canopy structure and leaf photosynthetic capacity is critical for further improving RUE and cotton yield under similar production environments.

Real-time monitoring of cotton above-ground biomass (AGB) is crucial for monitoring crop growth and optimizing management practices. This study evaluated UAV-based RGB and multispectral (MS) imagery for cotton AGB estimation across multiple growth stages under different planting densities and sowing dates in Anyang, China. Spectral features, vegetation indices (VIs), and Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) texture metrics were extracted and organized into three scenarios: RGB + MS, RGB-only, and MS-only. Recursive feature elimination with cross-validation (RFECV) was applied for feature selection, and six machine learning models were evaluated using both baseline and selected feature sets. Results showed that model performance was strongly influenced by growth stage, sensor configuration, and feature composition. Accuracy was highest at the seedling and squaring stages and decreased at flowering due to canopy complexity and spectral saturation. MS-only and fused features generally performed best at the seedling stage, while RGB-only features were competitive or superior at the squaring stage, highlighting the importance of high-resolution structural information. At flowering, fused RGB–MS features provided the most stable performance, although improvements were limited. RFECV exhibited stage-dependent behavior, improving performance mainly at early growth stages but showing inconsistent benefits later. SHAP analysis revealed a shift from texture-dominated predictors at the seedling stage to balanced feature contributions at squaring and vegetation index (VIs) dominance at flowering. Overall, cotton AGB estimation is a stage-dependent process requiring adaptive sensor and feature selection strategies.
