This study reports on the bio-synthesis and the main physical properties of p-type Co3O4 nanoparticles for the first time by a completely green chemistry process using Aspalathus linearis's natural extract as an effective chelating agent. Their surface/interface and optical properties are reported. In addition to the X-ray diffraction investigations, the Raman, and infrared as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies confirmed the single phase of the Co3O4 nanoparticles. As their average size can be as low as ⟨φparticle⟩ ∼3.6 nm, the reticular atomic plans are under a slight compressive state.

Introduction: There is emerging interest in medicinal plants in the biomedical field, due to their multitude of chemicals which show anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, or antitumoral potential. Research on medicinal plants has shown that nanotechnology could offer new solutions in the quality control, delivery aspects, or in sustaining herbal biological activities. This work reports on the preparation and characterization of silver nanoparticle-mediated Selaginella myosurus plant extract. Methods: Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and selected area electron diffraction have been used to characterize the prepared silver nanoparticles. The synthetic stability was studied by varying concentrations and pH of reactants. Egg albumin denaturation and carrageenan-induced rat paw edema model were used to ascertain the anti-inflammation. Results: Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy gave plasmon resonance ranging between 420 and 480 nm while Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy proved nano interface functionalized with organics. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern is in agreement with silver and silver chloride nanoparticles of crystallite size 33.7 nm and 44.2 nm for silver and silver chloride, respectively. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy enables elemental characterization of the particles consisting of silver and silver chloride among main elements. Spherical silver grain of 58.81 nm average size has been depicted with high-resolution scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Inhibitions of 99% and 60% were obtained in vitro and in vivo, respectively. Conclusion: The albumin denaturation and carrageenan-induced rat hind paw edema model to assess the anti-inflammatory potential of generated nanoparticles suggests that the silver nanoparticles may act as reducing/inhibiting agents on the release of acute inflammatory mediators. Hence, this work clearly demonstrated that silver nanoparticles mediated-Selaginella myosurus could be considered as a potential source for anti-inflammatory drugs.
Aim: To investigate the physical and biological properties of bioinspired zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles via aqueous leaf extracts of Sageretia thea. Experimental: Nanoparticles of size approximately 12.4 nm were extensively characterized. In vitro antimicrobial, cytotoxic, biocompatible and enzyme inhibition assays were performed. Results: Significant antimicrobial activities with and without UV illumination are reported. Bioinspired ZnO nanoparticles were found effective against fungal strains. MTT assay was performed to check the leishmanicidal activity against promastigotes (IC50: 6.2 μg/ml) and amastigotes (IC50: 10.87 μg/ml) of Leishmania tropica. Brine shrimp lethality was also indicated by bioinspired ZnO nanoparticles (IC50: 21.29 μg/ml). Conclusion: Hemocompatible nature of bioinspired nanoparticles was revealed. Furthermore, the antioxidant activities were performed. In addition, significant protein kinase while insignificant alpha amylase inhibition were recorded. Graphical abstract

This contribution reports for the first time on the synthesis and the main physical properties of single-phase pure α-Cr2O3 nanoparticles synthesized by a facile, rapid and eco-friendly process using Callistemon viminalis flower's extract as an effective oxidizing/reducing agent. These crystalline nanoparticles exhibit a cubic-like platelet shape with sharp edges with an average particle diagonal size of ∼92.2 nm. The room temperature physical properties of these pure highly crystalline Eskolaite α-Cr2O3 nanoparticles were carried out using complementary techniques such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), XRD, FTIR-ATR, Raman and XPS. A novel ternary Punica granatum L-Cu/Cu2O/CuO/ZnO nanocomposite was successfully synthesised via green route. In this work, we demonstrate that the green synthesis of metal oxides is more viable and facile compare to other methods, i.e., physical and chemical routes while presenting a potential electrode for energy applications. The prepared nanocomposite was characterised by both microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. High-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques revealed different transitional phases with an average nanocrystallite size of 29–20 mm. It was observed that the nanocomposites changed from amorphous-slightly crystalline Cu/Cu2O to polycrystalline Cu/Cu2O/CuO/ZnO at different calcination temperatures (room temperature-RT- 600 °C). The Cu/Cu2O/ZnO/CuO metal oxides proved to be highly crystalline and showed irregularly distributed particles with different sizes. Meanwhile, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the purity while together with ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy proved the proposed mechanism of the synthesised nanocomposite. UV-Vis showed improved catalytic activity of the prepared metal oxides, evident by narrow band gap energy. The redox and electrochemical properties of the prepared nanocomposite were achieved by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance (EIS) and galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD). The maximum specific capacitance (C s) was calculated to be 241 F g−1 at 50 mV s−1 for Cu/Cu2O/CuO/ZnO nanoplatelets structured electrode. Moreover, all the CuO nanostructures reveal better power performance, excellent rate as well as long term cycling stability. Such a study will encourages a new design for a wide spectrum of materials for smart electronic device applications.
Deterioration of soils over the years has led to a decline in crop yields and nutritional qualities, resulting from the oversupply of conventional fertilizers, which are unsustainable, costly and pose a threat to the environment. Nanoparticles are gaining a reputation in the field of agriculture for the remediation of soil degradation in a sustainable way. Recently, they have been recognized as potential fertilizers with properties that make them more absorbable and readily available for plant use than their bulk counterpart. However, there is less literature elaborating on the use of nanoparticles as agro-inputs for crop nutrition and protection. This review, therefore, provides insights into the application of nanoscaled nutrient elements such as silver, zinc, copper, iron, titanium, magnesium and calcium as fertilizers. In addition, the review explains the need for utilizing green synthesized nanomaterials as one of the ways to palliate the use of environmentally toxic chemicals in the cropping system and discusses the various benefits of nanoparticles, ranging from plant growth stimulation to defence against pathogens.
