Recent progress on remote sensing (RS) scene classification is substantial, benefiting mostly from the explosive development of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, different from the natural images in which the objects occupy most of the space, objects in RS images are usually small and separated. Therefore, there is still a large room for improvement of the vanilla CNNs that extract global image-level features for RS scene classification, ignoring local object-level features. In this article, we propose a novel RS scene classification method via enhanced feature pyramid network (EFPN) with deep semantic embedding (DSE). Our proposed framework extracts multiscale multilevel features using an EFPN. Then, to leverage the complementary advantages of the multilevel and multiscale features, we design a DSE module to generate discriminative features. Third, a feature fusion module, called two-branch deep feature fusion (TDFF), is introduced to aggregate the features at different levels in an effective way. Our method produces state-of-the-art results on two widely used RS scene classification benchmarks, with better effectiveness and accuracy than the existing algorithms. Beyond that, we conduct an exhaustive analysis on the role of each module in the proposed architecture, and the experimental results further verify the merits of the proposed method.

In recent years, single modality-based gait recognition has been extensively explored in the analysis of medical images or other sensory data, and it is recognized that each of the established approaches has different strengths and weaknesses. As an important motor symptom, gait disturbance is usually used for diagnosis and evaluation of diseases; moreover, the use of multimodality analysis of the patient’s walking pattern compensates for the one-sidedness of single modality gait recognition methods that only learn gait changes in a single measurement dimension. The fusion of multiple measurement resources has demonstrated promising performance in the identification of gait patterns associated with individual diseases. In this article, as a useful tool, we propose a novel hybrid model to learn the gait differences between three neurodegenerative diseases, between patients with different severity levels of Parkinson’s disease, and between healthy individuals and patients, by fusing and aggregating data from multiple sensors. A spatial feature extractor (SFE) is applied to generating representative features of images or signals. In order to capture temporal information from the two modality data, a new correlative memory neural network (CorrMNN) architecture is designed for extracting temporal features. Afterward, we embed a multiswitch discriminator to associate the observations with individual state estimations. Compared with several state-of-the-art techniques, our proposed framework shows more accurate classification results.

Scene classification in very high-resolution (VHR) remote sensing (RS) images is a challenging task due to the complex and diverse content of the images. Recently, convolution neural networks (CNNs) have been utilized to tackle this task. However, CNNs cannot fully meet the needs of scene classification due to clutters and small objects in VHR images. To handle these challenges, this letter presents a novel multilevel feature fusion (MLFF) network with adaptive channel dimensionality reduction for RS scene classification. Specifically, an adaptive method is designed for channel dimensionality reduction of high-dimensional features. Then, an MLFF module is introduced to fuse the features in an efficient way. Experiments on three widely used data sets show that our model outperforms several state-of-the-art methods in terms of both accuracy and stability.

Remote sensing (RS) scene classification plays an important role in a wide range of RS applications. Recently, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been applied to the field of scene classification in RS images and achieved impressive performance. However, to classify RS scenes, most of the existing CNN methods either utilize the high-level features from the last convolutional layer of CNNs, missing much important information existing at the other levels, or directly fuse the features at different levels, bringing redundant and/or mutually exclusive information. Inspired by the attention mechanism of the human visual system, in this article, we explore a novel relation-attention model and design an end-to-end relation-attention network (RANet) to learn powerful feature representations of multiple levels to further improve the classification performance. First, we propose to extract convolutional features at different levels by pretrained CNNs. Second, a multiscale feature computation module is constructed to connect features at different levels and generate multiscale semantic features. Third, a novel relation-attention model is designed to focus on the critical features whilst avoiding the use of redundant and even distractive ones by exploiting the scale contextual information. Finally, the resulting relation-attention features are concatenated and fed into a softmax layer for the final classification. Experiments on four well-known RS scene classification datasets (UC-Merced, WHU-RS19, AID, and OPTIMAL-31) show that our method outperforms some state-of-the-art algorithms.

The automatic recognition of multi-class objects with various backgrounds is a big challenge in the field of remote sensing (RS) image analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel recognition framework for multi-class RS objects based on the discriminative sparse representation. In this framework, the recognition problem is implemented in two stages. In the first, or discriminative dictionary learning stage, considering the characterization of remote sensing objects, the scale-invariant feature transform descriptor is first combined with an improved bag-of-words model for multi-class objects feature extraction and representation. Then, information about each class of training samples is fused into the dictionary learning process; by using the K-singular value decomposition algorithm, a discriminative dictionary can be learned for sparse coding. In the second, or recognition, stage, to improve the computational efficiency, the phase spectrum of a quaternion Fourier transform model is applied to the test image to predict a small set of object candidate locations. Then, a multi-scale sliding window mechanism is utilized to scan the image over those candidate locations to obtain the object candidates (or objects of interest). Subsequently, the sparse coding coefficients of these candidates under the discriminative dictionary are mapped to the discriminative vectors that have a good ability to distinguish different classes of objects. Finally, multi-class object recognition can be accomplished by analyzing these vectors. The experimental results show that the proposed work outperforms a number of state-of-the-art methods for multi-class remote sensing object recognition.

Tracking underwater targets is a focused application area in modern underwater defence systems. Using traditional techniques based on imaging or sensor arrays may be difficult and impractical in some mission‐critical systems. Alternatively, the underwater wireless sensor network (UWSN) is able to offer a promising solution. This paper tackles the problem of accurately tracking underwater targets moving through the UWSN environment. This problem is considered nonlinear and non‐Gaussian where the present solution methods based on the particle filter technique are powerful and simple to implement. For three‐dimensional underwater maneuvering target tracking, the traditional particle filter tracking algorithm may fail to track the targets robustly and accurately. Thus, the interacting multiple model method is combined with the particle filter to cope with uncertainties in target maneuvers. Simulation results show that the proposed method is a promising substitute for the traditional imaging‐based or sensor‐based approaches.
