Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an emerging technology for future wireless communications including 5G and especially 6G. It consists of a large 2D array of (semi-)passive scattering elements that control the electromagnetic properties of radio-frequency waves so that the reflected signals add coherently at the intended receiver or destructively to reduce co-channel interference. The promised gains of IRS-assisted communications depend on the accuracy of the channel state information. In this paper, we address the receiver design for an IRS-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system via a tensor modeling approach aiming at the channel estimation problem using supervised (pilot-assisted) methods. Considering a structured time-domain pattern of pilots and IRS phase shifts, we present two channel estimation methods that rely on a parallel factor (PARAFAC) tensor modeling of the received signals. The first one has a closed-form solution based on a Khatri-Rao factorization of the cascaded MIMO channel, by solving rank-1 matrix approximation problems, while the second on is an iterative alternating estimation scheme. The common feature of both methods is the decoupling of the estimates of the involved MIMO channel matrices (base station-IRS and IRS-user terminal), which provides performance enhancements in comparison to competing methods that are based on unstructured LS estimates of the cascaded channel. Design recommendations for both methods that guide the choice of the system parameters are discussed. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed receivers, highlight the involved trade-offs, and corroborate their superior performance compared to competing LS-based solutions.

With the congestion of the sub-6 GHz spectrum, the interest in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating on millimeter wave spectrum grows. In order to reduce the power consumption of such massive MIMO systems, hybrid analog/digital transceivers and application of low-resolution digital-to-analog/analog-to-digital converters have been recently proposed. In this work, we investigate the energy efficiency of quantized hybrid transmitters equipped with a fully/partially-connected phase-shifting network composed of active/passive phase-shifters and compare it to that of quantized digital precoders. We introduce a quantized single-user MIMO system model based on an additive quantization noise approximation considering realistic power consumption and loss models to evaluate the spectral and energy efficiencies of the transmit precoding methods. Simulation results show that partially-connected hybrid precoders can be more energy-efficient compared to digital precoders, while fully-connected hybrid precoders exhibit poor energy efficiency in general. Also, the topology of phase-shifting components offers an energy-spectral efficiency trade-off: active phase-shifters provide higher data rates, while passive phase-shifters maintain better energy efficiency.

We consider the channel estimation problem in point-to-point reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided millimeter-wave (mmWave) MIMO systems. By exploiting the low-rank nature of mmWave channels in the angular domains, we propose a non-iterative Two-stage RIS-aided Channel Estimation (TRICE) framework, where every stage is formulated as a multidimensional direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation problem. As a result, our TRICE framework is very general in the sense that any efficient multidimensional DOA estimation solution can be readily used in every stage to estimate the associated channel parameters. Numerical results show that the TRICE framework has a lower training overhead and a lower computational complexity, as compared to benchmark solutions.

Massive multiple‐input multiple‐output technology has been considered a breakthrough in wireless communication systems. It consists of equipping a base station with a large number of antennas to serve many active users in the same time–frequency block. Among its underlying advantages is the possibility to focus transmitted signal energy into very short‐range areas, which will provide huge improvements in terms of system capacity. However, while this new concept renders many interesting benefits, it brings up new challenges that have called the attention of both industry and academia: channel state information acquisition, channel feedback, instantaneous reciprocity, statistical reciprocity, architectures, and hardware impairments, just to mention a few. This paper presents an overview of the basic concepts of massive multiple‐input multiple‐output, with a focus on the challenges and opportunities, based on contemporary research.
