Massive multiple‐input multiple‐output technology has been considered a breakthrough in wireless communication systems. It consists of equipping a base station with a large number of antennas to serve many active users in the same time–frequency block. Among its underlying advantages is the possibility to focus transmitted signal energy into very short‐range areas, which will provide huge improvements in terms of system capacity. However, while this new concept renders many interesting benefits, it brings up new challenges that have called the attention of both industry and academia: channel state information acquisition, channel feedback, instantaneous reciprocity, statistical reciprocity, architectures, and hardware impairments, just to mention a few. This paper presents an overview of the basic concepts of massive multiple‐input multiple‐output, with a focus on the challenges and opportunities, based on contemporary research.
The emerging heterogeneous mobile network architecture is designed for an increasing amount of traffic, quality requirements, and new mobile cloud computing demands. This article proposes a hierarchical cloud computing architecture to enhance performance by adding a mobile dynamic cloud formed by powerful mobile devices to a traditional general static cloud. A mobile dynamic cloud is based on heterogeneous wireless architecture where device-to-device communication is used for data transmission between user devices. The main advantage of the proposed architecture is an increase in overall capacity of a mobile network through improved channel utilization and traffic offloading from Long Term Evolution-Advanced to device-to-device communication links. Simulations show that the proposed architecture increases the capacity of a mobile network by up to 10 percent depending on the conditions and amount of offloaded data. The offloading probability is also evaluated by taking into consideration the number of devices in the cloudlet and the content matching values. We have gained insight into how content similarity affects offloading probability much more than the number of devices in a cloudlet.
Reliable data delivery in the Internet of Things (IoT) is very important in order to provide IoT-based services with the required quality. However, IoT data delivery may not be successful for different reasons, such as connection errors, external attacks, or sensing errors. This results in data incompleteness, which decreases the performance of IoT applications. In particular, the recovery of missing data among the massive sensed data of the IoT is so important that it should be solved. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic method to recover missing (incomplete) data from IoT sensors by utilizing data from related sensors. The main idea of the proposed method is to perform probabilistic matrix factorization (PMF) within the preliminary assigned group of sensors. Unlike previous PMF approaches, the proposed model measures the similarity in data among neighboring sensors and splits them into different clusters with a K-means algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed PMF model with clustering outperforms support vector machine (SVM) and deep neural network (DNN) algorithms in terms of accuracy and root mean square error. By using normalized datasets, PMF shows faster execution time than SVM, and almost the same execution time as the DNN method. This proposed incomplete data-recovery approach is a promising alternative to traditional DNN and SVM methods for IoT telemetry applications.
The future of networking will be driven by the current emerging trends of combining the physical and virtual realities in cyberspace. Considering the ambient pandemic challenges, the role of virtual and augmented reality will definitely grow over time by transforming into the paradigm of the Metaverse of Things, where each person, thing or other entity will simultaneously exist within multiple synchronized realities. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for future metaverse applications composed of multiple synchronized data flows from multiple operators through multiple wearable devices and with different quality requirements. A new service quality model is proposed based on a customizable utility function for each individual data flow. The proposed approach is based on dynamic fine-grained data flow allocation and service selection using non-fungible tokens, which can be traded over the blockchain among users and operators in a decentralized mobile network environment.
In 5G systems, the current machine-tomachine communications using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth provide a good opportunity to dramatically increase overall performance. Converged mobile networks can provide M2M communications with significant performance improvements by sharing unlicensed spectrum bands in cellular networks, such as Long Term Evolution-Advanced, by using cognitive radio technology. Thus, the converged mobile network will become one of the most popular future research topics because mobile multimedia content services have been generally accepted among mobile device users. In this article, we provide an overview of converged mobile networks, investigating different types of converged mobile networks, different types of convergence, and the current problems and solutions. This survey article also proposes potential research topics in converged mobile networks.
The rapid increasing of the data volume in mobile networks forces operators to look into different options for capacity improvement. Thus, modern 5G networks became more complex in terms of deployment and management. Therefore, new approaches are needed to simplify network design and management by enabling self-organizing capabilities. In this paper, we propose a novel intelligent algorithm for performance optimization of the massive MIMO beamforming. The key novelty of the proposed algorithm is in the combination of three neural networks which cooperatively implement the deep adversarial reinforcement learning workflow. In the proposed system, one neural network is trained to generate realistic user mobility patterns, which are then used by second neural network to produce relevant antenna diagram. Meanwhile, third neural network estimates the efficiency of the generated antenna diagram returns corresponding reward to both networks. The advantage of the proposed approach is that it leans by itself and does not require large training datasets.
