The investigation of super-cooled droplet impingement characteristics is the most important step for aircraft icing and anti-icing/de-icing analyses. The Lagrangian method and the Eulerian method are widely used to compute the droplet motion and collection efficiency, and the two methods are considered to obtain almost the same results for surface impingement characteristics under icing conditions. The models and implementation approaches of the two methods were established in this work, and the simulations of droplet motion were carried out for a NACA 0012 airfoil, a 2D section of an A320 head, a multi-element airfoil, and an icing wind tunnel. The collection efficiencies of the NACA 0012 airfoil obtained by the present Lagrangian and Eulerian methods show good agreement with the results in the literature, validating the established methods. The droplet impingement characteristics of the two methods are consistent for the aircraft surfaces without upstream trajectory deflections. However, when the droplet motion is deflected by the frontal body before hitting the rear surfaces, the results obtained by the two methods are different whether the droplet trajectories intersect or not, which subverts the traditional opinion that the Lagrangian and Eulerian methods would obtain the same result of the droplet impingement characteristics. The reason is studied in detail according to the droplet motion results in the icing wind tunnel. The findings of this work are helpful for the accuracy of aircraft icing and anti-icing/de-icing simulations, and useful for the development of airworthiness certification.

The impact of supercooled water droplets is the cause of aircraft icing, and the acquisition of impingement characteristics is the key to icing prediction and the design of ice protection systems. The introduction of water droplet collection efficiency is required to obtain the characteristics for the Lagrangian method. In this work, a traditional flow tube method, a local flow tube method, and a statistical method are established to calculate the local collection efficiency, based on Lagrangian droplet trajectories. Through the numerical simulations of the air–droplet flow field around an NACA 0012 airfoil, the accuracies of the three methods in regard to collection efficiency are verified. Then, these three methods are applied to obtain the results for water droplet trajectories and the collection efficiency of an S-shaped duct, a 2D engine cone section and an icing wind tunnel. The results show that the distributions of water droplet collection efficiency obtained by the three methods are consistent and the three methods are all feasible when the water droplets do not overlap or cross before hitting the aircraft surfaces. When the water droplets are shadowed by upstream surfaces or blown by air injection, the droplet trajectories might overlap or even cross, and the local collection efficiencies obtained by the traditional flow tube method, local flow tube method, and statistical method might differ. The statistical method is relatively accurate. However, not all the droplet impingement characteristics obtained by the three methods are different due to these effects, and the non-crossing of the droplet trajectories is not a necessary condition for the use of the flow tube method. The effects of trajectory crossings are analyzed and discussed in detail in different situations for the three methods. This work is helpful for understanding and accurately calculating the droplet impingement characteristics and is of great significance for simulations of the aircraft icing process and anti/de-icing range.

High-speed capability is a defining feature of next-generation helicopters, enabling time-sensitive missions. This paper compares three high-speed configurations: tiltrotor, coaxial rigid rotor, and compound conventional rotor. Based on existing technology and operational needs, the study focuses on the aerodynamic layout of a compound conventional rotor high-speed unmanned helicopter. With key parameters, including a 300 kg takeoff weight and a maximum speed of 240 km/h, iterative optimization was conducted using theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and flight dynamics evaluation. A feasible aerodynamic layout based on a “dual-side propulsion concept” was developed, followed by flight performance assessment and full-scale prototype flight tests. The results show: (1) the final layout comprises a two-blade hingeless rotor, three-blade pusher propellers, wings, skid landing gear, an H-tail, and a horizontal stabilizer; (2) flight performance meets all design targets, achieving maximum and cruise speeds of 260.48 km/h and 180 km/h at 1500 m altitude; and (3) full-scale prototype tests confirm the rationality of the aerodynamic layout and the reliability of the design process, achieving a high-speed flight of 242.6 km/h at an altitude of 1280 m. This work provides a valuable configuration reference for high-speed unmanned helicopter development.
