The Solar Air Heater (SAH) is considered to be one of the promising devices for the utilization of solar radiation. Extracting more heat to the flowing air is the focus of researchers, and many novel ideas are adopted to improve the efficiency of such collectors. The objective of the present work is the enhancement of thermal performance using a numerical analysis of a single flow double pass solar air heater with two types of arrangements of aerofoil fin configurations. The effect of the aerofoil fin configurations and the height of the fin are investigated for their thermal and thermohydraulic efficiencies. The height of the fin varied parametrically for the Reynolds number ranging from 3000 to 24,000 by keeping the axial pitch of the fin as a constant. It is found that the thermal efficiency increases with the increase in fin height due to an increased flow turbulence causing more absorption of heat to the working fluid. However, it is seen that the varying height of the fin beyond a certain height has yielded an adverse effect in terms of lesser thermal efficiency due to the expected flow blockage in the main stream. The thermohydraulic efficiency increases as the height of the fin decreases. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) results revealed that the optimum aerofoil fin configuration yields approximately a 23.24% higher thermal efficiency when compared with that of the single pass solar air heater (base model). The thermohydraulic efficiency exceeds the optimum aerofoil fin configuration compared with the base model by approximately 20.94%.

This study presents an innovative idea to augment heat transfer to an air heater using helicoidal finned arrangement. A parametric analysis of the helicoidal shaped fin geometry is considered with helicoidal pitch ratio of 0.1666–0.3, fin diameter ratio of 1.75–2. For the placement of the fin beneath the absorber plate, longitudinal pitch ratio ranging from 0.0416 to 0.1666 are used. The flow Reynolds number used for the study ranges from 4800 to 25,000. The effects of helicoidal pitch ratio, wire diameter ratio and longitudinal pitch ratio on Nusselt number and friction factor have been discussed. It is seen from the analysis that there is a significant improvement in Nusselt number for the case of helicoidal fin of wire diameter ratio of 1 when compared to base model as well as straight fin model for the operating range of Reynolds number. It is also observed from the analysis that for the helicoidal fin configuration of helicoidal pitch ratio of 0.2333, friction factor appears to be moderate. Flow and roughness parameters for roughened solar air heater have been optimized using thermal-hydraulic enhancement factor (THEF). The study reveals that by the use of helicoidal fins, maximum enhancement in the Nusselt number is found to be 2.21 times when compared to the base model for longitudinal pitch ratio of 0.0416, helicoidal pitch ratio of 0.166 for a fixed wire diameter. The improvement obtained in performance corresponding to increased Nusselt number establishes the efficacy the helicoidal fin design for the absorber plate.

It is a well-known fact that the diffuser of a centrifugal fan plays a vital role in the energy transformation leading to better static pressure rise and efficiency. Many researchers have worked on modified geometry with respect to both impeller and diffuser so as to extract better efficiency of the fan. This paper highlights a unique numerical study on the performance of a centrifugal fan, which has a diffuser having nonparallel shrouds. The shroud geometry is parametrically varied by adopting various convergence ratios (CR) for the nonparallel shrouds encompassing the diffuser passage. It is revealed in the study that there exists an optimal CR for which the performance is improved over the regular parallel shrouded diffuser passage (base model). It is observed from the numerical analysis that for a nonparallel convergent shroud corresponding to a CR of 0.35, a relatively higher head coefficient of 3.6% is obtained when compared to that of the base model. This configuration also yields a higher theoretical efficiency of about 2.1% corroborating the improvement in head coefficient. This study predicts a design prescription for nonparallel diffuser shrouds of a centrifugal fan for augmented performance due to the fact that the converging region accelerates and guides the flow efficiently by establishing radial pressure equilibrium.
