This paper presents a three dimensional numerical analysis of a flat plate solar air heater in the presence of pin fin array using the CFD software tool ANSYS Fluent 16.2. The effect of geometric parameters of pin fins as well as the flow Reynolds number (4,000-24,000) on the effective efficiency is evaluated. The longitudinal pitch (PL) of pin fin array is varied as 30, 40 and 50 mm and the diameter (Dw) is varied as 1.0 mm, 1.6 mm and 2.2 mm. The results show that the presence of pin fins generate considerable enhancement in fluid turbulence as well as heat transfer area to a maximum extent of about 53.8%. The maximum average increase in instantaneous thermal efficiency is found to be about 14.2% higher as compared to the base model for the fin diameter of 2.2 mm and a longitudinal pitch value of 30 mm. In terms of effective efficiency, the pin fin array exhibits significant enhancement, especially at lower flow rate conditions. Finally, the effective efficiency of pin fin array is compared with the previous work of authors involving spherical turbulators and sinewave corrugations on the absorber plate. The results show that the pin fin array exhibits a relatively superior effective efficiency to a maximum extent of about 73% for lower flow rate conditions.

The Solar Air Heater (SAH) is considered to be one of the promising devices for the utilization of solar radiation. Extracting more heat to the flowing air is the focus of researchers, and many novel ideas are adopted to improve the efficiency of such collectors. The objective of the present work is the enhancement of thermal performance using a numerical analysis of a single flow double pass solar air heater with two types of arrangements of aerofoil fin configurations. The effect of the aerofoil fin configurations and the height of the fin are investigated for their thermal and thermohydraulic efficiencies. The height of the fin varied parametrically for the Reynolds number ranging from 3000 to 24,000 by keeping the axial pitch of the fin as a constant. It is found that the thermal efficiency increases with the increase in fin height due to an increased flow turbulence causing more absorption of heat to the working fluid. However, it is seen that the varying height of the fin beyond a certain height has yielded an adverse effect in terms of lesser thermal efficiency due to the expected flow blockage in the main stream. The thermohydraulic efficiency increases as the height of the fin decreases. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) results revealed that the optimum aerofoil fin configuration yields approximately a 23.24% higher thermal efficiency when compared with that of the single pass solar air heater (base model). The thermohydraulic efficiency exceeds the optimum aerofoil fin configuration compared with the base model by approximately 20.94%.

This study presents an innovative idea to augment heat transfer to an air heater using helicoidal finned arrangement. A parametric analysis of the helicoidal shaped fin geometry is considered with helicoidal pitch ratio of 0.1666–0.3, fin diameter ratio of 1.75–2. For the placement of the fin beneath the absorber plate, longitudinal pitch ratio ranging from 0.0416 to 0.1666 are used. The flow Reynolds number used for the study ranges from 4800 to 25,000. The effects of helicoidal pitch ratio, wire diameter ratio and longitudinal pitch ratio on Nusselt number and friction factor have been discussed. It is seen from the analysis that there is a significant improvement in Nusselt number for the case of helicoidal fin of wire diameter ratio of 1 when compared to base model as well as straight fin model for the operating range of Reynolds number. It is also observed from the analysis that for the helicoidal fin configuration of helicoidal pitch ratio of 0.2333, friction factor appears to be moderate. Flow and roughness parameters for roughened solar air heater have been optimized using thermal-hydraulic enhancement factor (THEF). The study reveals that by the use of helicoidal fins, maximum enhancement in the Nusselt number is found to be 2.21 times when compared to the base model for longitudinal pitch ratio of 0.0416, helicoidal pitch ratio of 0.166 for a fixed wire diameter. The improvement obtained in performance corresponding to increased Nusselt number establishes the efficacy the helicoidal fin design for the absorber plate.

The present paper discusses a detailed numerical study performed to investigate flow and heat transfer characteristics of impingement cooling of the leading edge of a HP gas turbine blade model. An array of innovative converging shape nozzles are used as jets which strike the surface to be cooled. A comprehensive study is presented investigating various parameters which effect impingement cooling. These parameters include varying Mach number of the flow as 0.2 to 0.8, converging ratio of the nozzle varied as 2 to 8 at two different minor diameters of 0.25–0.5 mm of the jet, pitch distance is changed from 3 to 5 mm, and inter-jet distance changed from 3 mm to 6 mm. Each parameter is independently scrutinized keeping other parameters constant. The results indicate the formation of primary stagnation region where Nusselt number augmentation is maximum compared to secondary stagnation region. Cross-flow effect plays a significant role in reducing peak values in the Nusselt number in the downstream region. Enhancement in peak Nusselt number value is greater for high values of Mach number of the flow, lower jet-to-target distances and the higher converging ratio at a lower value of jet diameter. Average Nusselt number is found to be higher for lower values of pitch distance.

This paper presents a numerical analysis of the thermal performance improvement in a flat plate solar air heater equipped with chamfered turbulators attached below the absorber plate for evaluating performance for Reynolds numbers ranging from 3,000 to 21,000. According to the research, chamfered turbulators caused the flow to become highly turbulent. This flow behaviour with flow separation around the turbulators positively affects performance. This paper attempts to explain the complex flow behaviour found during the analysis. The turbulator diameter varies in 1 mm increments from 3 to 7 mm at a constant longitudinal pitch of 200 mm. The number of turbulator rows in the transverse direction is kept constant at three. The chamfer is represented by the flow attack angle, which can be 30°, 45°, or 60° facing the direction of flow and opposing the direction of flow. The results showed that a 7mm diameter turbulator with a 30° chamfer angle placed against the flow of air yielded a considerably more significant thermal enhancement factor of 1.15 over the spectrum of flow Reynolds number studied
