Sergio Abbate got the Laurea degree in Physics at the University of Milan, Italy, in 1974. He joined C.N.R. Italy in 1976 and worked with Giuseppe Zerbi in Milan in Raman and IR spectroscopies of polymers, with some interest in Fermi Resonance phenomena. He was Postdoc and Fulbright fellow with Al Moscowitz and John Overend, at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis (1979-1982). There he witnessed the birth of VCD (vibrational circular dichroism). He then was associate professor of Chemical Physics at the Universities of Palermo, Basilicata in Potenza and Brescia in Applied Physics, where he obtained tenure as full Professor in Physics in 2001. He led a group of several researchers, post-docs and PhD students with researches in semiclassical and Molecular Dynamics, in DFT calculations for computational spectroscopy. In Brescia he started experimental chiroptical spectroscopies, using commercial and home-built instruments dealing with CD from UV to vis, to NIR to mid.IR. Recently he helped setting up two CPL (circularly polarized luminescence) apparatuses and designed MCD (magnetic CD) and MCPL experiments. Since November 2020 he is retired and he is honorary professor at the University of Brescia.
