Nonlinear frequency conversion of wavelength agile and high-power random fiber lasers can provide a promising way to generate continuous-wave (CW) visible and mid-infrared (MIR) light with unique properties such as the continuous modeless spectrum, low temporal/spatial coherence, and high temporal stability. Here, we report a dual-wavelength switchable and tunable random Raman fiber laser (RRFL) based on a phosphosilicate fiber that has two Raman gain peaks for the first time and demonstrate its superior capability to generate widely tunable CW visible and mid-infrared light via nonlinear frequency conversions. By using the combination of a tunable pump and two tunable gratings in Littrow configuration that can provide separated point feedback for the two Stokes wavelengths corresponding to silica- and phosphorus-related Raman peaks, the spectrum of an RRFL can be flexibly manipulated for the aim of nonlinear frequency conversions, including single-wavelength tunable emission at the 1.1 μm or 1.2 μm band for second-harmonic generation (SHG), dual-wavelength simultaneously tunable emission at the 1.1 μm and 1.2 μm bands for the sum-frequency generation (SFG), and dual-wavelength separation tunable emission for difference-frequency generation (DFG). As a result, with the combination of SHG and SFG in a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal array, we experimentally demonstrate the broadest tuning range (560–630 nm) of visible light generated from an RRFL, to the best of our knowledge. The tunable MIR light in the range of 10.7–12.3 μm is also demonstrated through DFG of an RRFL operating in separation tunable dual-wavelength emission mode in a BaGa4Se7 (BGSe) crystal, which is the first realization of >10 μm CW DFG in the BGSe crystal. We believe the developed dual-wavelength switchable and tunable RRFL can provide a new compact, robust, and cost-effective platform to realize broadly tunable light in both the visible and MIR regions, which can also find potential applications in imaging, sensing, and temporal ghost imaging in various spectral bands.

Raman fiber lasers (RFLs) have been widely utilized in long-haul optical transmission systems as pump sources for distributed Raman amplification (DRA) to increase transmission distance and capacity. However, RFLs with relatively large temporal intensity fluctuations would deteriorate signal quality due to the transfer of relative intensity noise (RIN). In this Letter, a low-noise high-order RFL common cavity pumped by an ytterbium-doped random fiber laser (YRFL) is proposed and demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Stable 4th-order random Raman lasing operating at 1365 nm is generated with 8.9 W of output power, without use of a multi-stage master oscillation power amplification system. Thanks to the YRFL common-cavity pumping where a wavelength division multiplexer (WDM)-assisted fiber–loop mirror is used to generate stable 1090 nm ytterbium-doped random lasing and cascaded random Raman lasing simultaneously, the RIN of the 1365 nm RFL is suppressed as low as − 120 d B / H z without any peak over a 0–100 MHz span. Furthermore, the output power and lasing wavelength of this RFL can be flexibly tuned by adjusting the laser diode pump power, high-reflectivity fiber Bragg grating center wavelength, and single-mode fiber length. Hence, such a low-noise high-order RFL paves a way for the development of novel tunable RFLs with stable temporal output, leading to potential replacement of conventional RFLs for DRA in long-haul optical transmission systems to achieve better performances.

Characterizing the orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) modes is critically important for OAM-encoded data transfer. However, traditional characterizing approaches rely on either complex and precise experimental configurations or complicated prior information processing. In these scenarios, the correlation features of OAM-dependent speckles from the scattering effect have received little attention. Here, we investigate the cross-correlation characteristics of the OAM speckles resulting from a scattering medium and propose an appealing alternative for spatial mode sorting and demultiplexing based on the OAM-dependent speckles. We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that the cross-correlation operation between two different OAM-dependent speckles can uniformly derive an annulus pattern, whose dimension is determined by the absolute topological charge difference value between the two corresponding OAM modes. Based on this mechanism, the original coherent OAM modes can be easily sorted by implementing the cross-correlation operation between incoherently measured OAM-dependent speckles. To fully capitalize on the orthogonal feature of the OAM-dependent speckles, we also construct OAM mode demultiplexing experiments using a ground glass diffuser, where both 8-bit grayscale and 24-bit RGB OAM-encoded data demultiplexing are successfully demonstrated with superior error rates. Results show that the OAM-dependent speckles, previously treated as a nuisance for practical applications, can be surprisingly utilized as a competitive candidate for OAM mode sorting and demultiplexing, thus opening new directions in optical communication and information processing.

Memory-effect-based speckle correlation is one of the most practical techniques for imaging through scattering opaque media, where a light source with low spatial coherence and moderate bandwidth plays a pivotal role. Usually, a rapidly rotating diffuser is applied to make the light source spatially decoherent. Here, an all-fiber-based low-spatial-coherence light source is proposed and demonstrated for such speckle-correlated imaging. The illumination structure is greatly simplified, the lightening efficiency is enhanced, and the wavelength is extended to the near-infrared band, which is favorable for a larger memory effect range and deeper penetrating depth through opacity. Moreover, the proposed local illumination method can identify the orientation of the object, which has not been revealed by former methods. This work would facilitate the research in optical biomedical imaging and broaden the applications of multimode random fiber lasers.

A high-power multi-transverse modes random fiber laser (RFL) is investigated by combining a master oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) configuration with a segment of extra-large mode area step-index multimode fiber (MMF). Spatial coherence of the high-power multi-transverse modes RFL has been analyzed, which shows that speckle contrast is reduced dramatically with the output power increasing. In this way, considerably low speckle contrast of ~0.01 is achieved under high laser power of ~56 W, which are the records for multi-transverse modes RFLs in both spatial coherence and output power. This work paves a way to develop high-power RFLs with very low spatial coherence for wide-range speckle-free imaging and free-space communication applications.
