Irrigation has been pivotal in sustaining wheat as a major food crop in the world and is increasingly important as an adaptation response to climate change. In the context of agricultural production responding to climate change, improved irrigation management plays a significant role in increasing water productivity (WP) and maintaining the sustainable development of water resources. Considering that wheat is a major crop cultivated in arid and semi-arid regions, which consumes high amounts of irrigation water, developing wheat irrigation management with high efficiency is urgently required. Both irrigation scheduling and irrigation methods intricately influence wheat physiology, affect plant growth and development, and regulate grain yield and quality. In this frame, this review aims to provide a critical analysis of the regulation mechanism of irrigation management on wheat physiology, plant growth and yield formation, and grain quality. Considering the key traits involved in wheat water uptake and utilization efficiency, we suggest a series of future perspectives that could enhance the irrigation efficiency of wheat.

Sound irrigation and nitrogen management strategies are necessary to achieve sustainable yield and water use efficiency of winter wheat in the North China Plain (NCP). The coupled effects of irrigation scheduling and the nitrogen application mode (NAM) on winter wheat growth, yield and water use efficiency under drip irrigation were evaluated with a two-year field experiment, which consisted of three irrigation scheduling levels (ISLs) (irrigating when soil water consumption (SWC) reached 20, 35 and 50 mm, referred as I20, I35 and I50, respectively) and three nitrogen application modes (NAMs) (ratio of basal application and topdressing as 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100, referred as N50:50, N25:75 and N0:100, respectively). The experimental results showed that irrigating winter wheat at ISL I35 substantially (p < 0.05) improved the grain yield by 15.89%, 3.32% and 14.82%, 4.31% and water use efficiency (WUE) by 5.23%, 16.03% and 5.26%, 12.36%, compared with those at ISL I20 and I50 in 2017–2018 and 2018–2019 growing seasons, respectively. NAM N25:75 appeared very beneficial in terms of grain yield, yield components and WUE as compared to other NAM levels. The maximum grain yield (8.62 and 9.40 t ha−1) and water use efficiency (1.88 and 2.09 kg m−3) were achieved in treatment I35N25:75 in two growing seasons over those in other treatments. The results in this study may deliver a scientific basis for irrigation and nitrogen fertilization management of the drip-irrigated winter wheat production in the NCP.

Drought and salinity stress reduce root hydraulic conductivity of plant seedlings, and melatonin application positively mitigates stress-induced damage. However, the underlying effect of melatonin priming on root hydraulic conductivity of seedlings under drought–salinity combined remains greatly unclear. In the current report, we investigated the influence of seeds of three wheat lines’ 12 h priming with 100 μM of melatonin on root hydraulic conductivity (Lpr) and relevant physiological indicators of seedlings under PEG, NaCl, and PEG + NaCl combined stress. A previous study found that the combined PEG and NaCl stress remarkably reduced the Lpr of three wheat varieties, and its value could not be detected. Melatonin priming mitigated the adverse effects of combined PEG + NaCl stress on Lpr of H4399, Y1212, and X19 to 0.0071 mL·h−1·MPa−1, 0.2477 mL·h−1·MPa−1, and 0.4444 mL·h−1·MPa−1, respectively, by modulating translation levels of aquaporin genes and contributed root elongation and seedlings growth. The root length of H4399, Y1212, and X19 was increased by 129.07%, 141.64%, and 497.58%, respectively, after seeds pre-treatment with melatonin under PEG + NaCl combined stress. Melatonin -priming appreciably regulated antioxidant enzyme activities, reduced accumulation of osmotic regulators, decreased levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), and increased K+ content in stems and root of H4399, Y1212, and X19 under PEG + NaCl stress. The path investigation displayed that seeds primed with melatonin altered the modification of the path relationship between Lpr and leaf area under stress. The present study suggested that melatonin priming was a strategy as regards the enhancement of root hydraulic conductivity under PEG, NaCl, and PEG + NaCl stress, which efficiently enhanced wheat resistant to drought–salinity stress.

During four consecutive growing seasons (2014–2018), field experiments were conducted in the North China to determine winter wheat production function. The field experiments were carried out using winter wheat subjected to four N levels (N120, N180, N240, and N300) and three irrigation levels (If, I0.8f, and I0.6f). The main aims were to characterize winter wheat productivity, drought response factor Ky, and the winter wheat grain yield production functions in relation to water supply under the different N fertilizer levels. The amount of water supply (rain + irrigation) were 326–434, 333–441, 384–492, and 332–440 mm in 2014–2015, 2015–2016, 2016–2017, and 2017–2018 growing seasons, respectively. Similarly, the values of ETa (including the contribution from soil water storage) were 413–466, 384–468, 401–466, and 417–467 mm in 2014–2015, 2015–2016, 2016–2017, and 2017–2018, respectively. ETa increased as the amount of irrigation increased. The average values of If, I0.8f, and I0.6f over the four growing seasons were 459–465, 432–446, and 404–413 mm, respectively. For the same amount of irrigation, there was only small difference in ETa among different nitrogen levels; for the three irrigation levels, the values of ETa in N120, N180, N240, and N300 ranged from 384 to 466, 384 to 466, 385 to 467, and 407 to 468 mm, respectively. Water productivity values ranged from 1.69 to 2.50 kg m−3 for (rain + irrigation) and 1.45 to 2.05 kg·m−3 for ETa. The Ky linearly decreased with the increase in nitrogen amount, and the values of r were greater than 0.92. The values of Ky for winter wheat in N120, N180, N240, and N300 were 1.54, 1.41, 1.28, and 1.25, respectively. The mean value of Ky for winter wheat over the three irrigation levels and the four nitrogen levels was 1.37 (r = 0.95). In summary, to gain higher grain yield and WUE, optimal combination of N fertilizer of 180–240 kg·ha−1 and irrigation quota of 36–45 mm per irrigation should be applied for winter wheat with drip fertigation in the North China Plain.

In the North China Plain, drip irrigation is gradually used in winter wheat production, and the improper management of water and fertilizer aggravates the risk of crop instability and groundwater pollution. A lysimeter experiment with three levels of fertilization timing (T1 = beginning; T2 = middle; and T3 = end of the irrigation cycle) and two irrigation rates (W1 of 30 mm and W2 of 20 mm) was carried out to investigate the effects of irrigation rate and fertilization timing on the soil NO3−-N distribution, crop development, yield, and water–nitrogen usage efficiency of winter wheat. The results indicated that, under the condition of delayed fertilization timing (T2 and T3), the trend of NO3−-N migration to the edge of moist soil became more apparent. The treatments of irrigation rate and fertilization timing significantly affected the plant height, water–nitrogen utilization efficiency, aboveground biomass, grain yield, and leaf area index. The maximum grain yield of 7688.67 kg ha−1 was found at W1T2, which had a nitrogen partial factor productivity (NPFP) of 32.04 kg kg−1. Moreover, W1T2 did not result in a significant reduction in irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) (4.27 kg m−3) in comparison with other treatments (4.00–5.43 kg m−3). Based on crop growth, N uptake, yield, IWUE, and NPFP, the irrigation rate of 30 mm combined with fertilization in the middle of the irrigation duration could be considered as suitable irrigation and nitrogen timing for drip-irrigated wheat.

Plant physiological responses to various stresses are characterized by interaction and coupling, while the intrinsic mechanism remains unclear. The effects of intraspecific competition on plant growth, stomatal opening, and hormone concentrations were investigated with three tomato genotypes (WT-wild type, Ailsa Craig; FL-a abscisic acid (ABA) deficient mutant, flacca; NR-a partially ethylene-insensitive genotype) under two water regimes (full irrigation, irrigation amount = daily transpiration; deficit irrigation, 60% of irrigation amount in full irrigation) in this study. Three kinds of competitions were designed, i.e., root and canopy competition, non-root competition, and non-canopy competition, respectively. Intraspecific competition reduced plant leaf area and stomatal conductance (gs) of wild-type tomato, accompanied by ABA accumulation and ethylene evolution. Intraspecific competition-induced decrease in gs was absent in FL and NR, indicating ABA and ethylene involved in plant response to intraspecific competition. As soil water becomes dry, the competition decreased gs by elevating ABA and ethylene accumulations. Under severe drought, the competition-induced decline in gs was covered by the severe drought-induced decrease in gs, as hydraulic signals most probably dominate. The absence of canopy competition insignificantly influenced plant stomatal opening of well-watered tomato, as canopy separation minimized the plant neighbor sensing by ethylene and other signals. Whereas under water deficit condition, the absence of canopy competition significantly reduced ABA accumulation in roots and then stomatal conductance, indicating the belowground neighbor detection signals maybe enhanced by soil drought. The absence of root competition increased ethylene evolution, confirming the importance of ethylene in neighbor detection and plant response to environmental stress.
