Optical remote sensing images have a wide range of applications but are often affected by cloud cover, which interferes with subsequent analysis. Therefore, cloud removal has become indispensable in remote sensing data processing. The Tibetan Plateau, as a sensitive region to climate change, plays a crucial role in the East Asian water cycle and regional climate due to its snow cover. However, the rich ice and snow resources, rapid snow condition changes, and active atmospheric convection in the plateau as well as its surrounding mountainous areas, make optical remote sensing prone to cloud interference. This is particularly significant when monitoring snow cover changes, where cloud removal becomes essential considering the complex terrain and unique snow characteristics of the Tibetan Plateau. This paper proposes a novel Multi-Scale Attention-based Cloud Removal Model (MATT). The model integrates global and local information by incorporating multi-scale attention mechanisms and local interaction modules, enhancing the contextual semantic relationships and improving the robustness of feature representation. To improve the segmentation accuracy of cloud- and snow-covered regions, a cloud mask is introduced in the local-attention module, combined with the local interaction module to modulate and reconstruct fine-grained details. This enables the simultaneous representation of both fine-grained and coarse-grained features at the same level. With the help of multi-scale fusion modules and selective attention modules, MATT demonstrates excellent performance on both the Sen2_MTC_New and XZ_Sen2_Dataset datasets. Particularly on the XZ_Sen2_Dataset, it achieves outstanding results: PSNR = 29.095, SSIM = 0.897, FID = 125.328, and LPIPS = 0.356. The model shows strong cloud removal capabilities in cloud- and snow-covered areas in mountainous regions while effectively preserving snow information, and providing significant support for snow cover change studies.

Active remote sensing technology represented by multi-beam and lidar provides an important approach for the effective acquisition of underwater coral reef geomorphological information. A spatially continuous surface model of coral reef geomorphology reconstructed from active remote sensing datasets can provide important geomorphological parameters for the research of coral reef geomorphological and ecological changes. However, the surface modeling methods commonly used in previous studies, such as ordinary kriging (OK) and natural neighborhood (NN), often represent a “smoothing effect”, which causes the strong spatial variability of coral reefs to be imprecisely reflected by the reconstructed surfaces, thus affecting the accurate calculation of subsequent geomorphological parameters. In this study, a spatial variability modified OK (OK-SVM) method is proposed to reduce the impact of the “smoothing effect” on the high-precision reconstruction of the complex geomorphology of coral reefs. The OK-SVM adopts a collaborative strategy of global parameter transformation, local residual correction, and extremum correction to modify the spatial variability of the reconstructed model, while maintaining high local accuracy. The experimental results show that the OK-SVM has strong robustness to spatial variability modification. This method was applied to the geomorphological reconstruction of the northern area of a coral atoll in the Nansha Islands, South China Sea, and the performance was compared with that of OK and NN. The results show that OK-SVM has higher numerical accuracy and attribute accuracy in detailed morphological fidelity, and is more adaptable in the geomorphological reconstruction of coral reefs with strong spatial variability. This method is relatively reliable for achieving high-precision reconstruction of complex geomorphology of coral reefs from active remote sensing datasets, and has potential to be extended to other geomorphological reconstruction applications.

Supervoxels provide a natural and compact representation of 3D point clouds that enables operations to be performed on regions rather than on scattered points. However, most supervoxel segmentation methods generate supervoxels based on geometric dissimilarity among points and cannot preserve accurate structure boundaries when noise and outliers are present due to the uncertainty in the random sampling of representative points (RPs). This paper formulates indoor supervoxel segmentation as selecting RPs and matching each point with its RP simultaneously. The RPs are selected from nonboundary areas instead of randomly sampled points, guaranteeing the correctness of sampling from the same structure. The best point-to-RP matching is achieved through iterative refinement/clustering via an energy descent method, which ensures the optimal overall segmentation. Experimental tests on five publicly available datasets demonstrate that our method preserves indoor structure boundaries and small structures more effectively than other state-of-the-art methods, resulting in performance scores of approximately 0.65 for boundary recall.

Rapid urbanization has further expanded the scale of construction land in urban agglomerations. The encroachment of urban land on ecological land has led to severe ecological problems and threatened the stability of ecological security in urban agglomerations. Analyzing the characteristics of future urban multi-scenario expansion and its impacts on ecological security patterns (ESP) can provide guidance for formulating ecologically sustainable management and control Policies. Our study focuses on Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan (CZX) urban agglomeration as the study area and establishes an ESP. Additionally, a cellular automata (CA) was used to simulate future urban expansion patterns under three scenarios (i.e., natural development scenario, urban development scenario, and ecological conservation scenario). The subsequent analysis evaluates their impact on the ESP. The simulation results indicate that from 2020 to 2030, the CZX urban agglomeration will undergo rapid urban expansion under the natural development scenario and urban development scenario, characterized by outward growth surrounding the existing construction land. In the natural development scenario, urban expansion is primarily concentrated in the northwest and south directions of construction land, the proportion of construction land increased by 2.78%; in the urban development scenario, it is concentrated in the southeast direction of construction land, the proportion of construction land increased by 3.24%. Ecological conflicts in the aforementioned development scenarios primarily arise in the southwestern region of Changsha County, as well as the southern areas of Kaifu District and Furong District. Conversely, under the ecological conservation scenario, the rate of urban expansion has significantly decreased, environmental preservation is upheld at its highest level, and the proportion of construction land only increased by 0.04%. Based on the simulation results, we present targeted recommendations for urban land planning and growth management, as well as the protection, restoration, monitoring, and development of ecological land. These suggestions provide effective guidance for improving the stability of ESP in urban agglomerations and promoting high-quality development in Chinese urban agglomerations.

Timely and accurate predictions of winter wheat yields are key to ensuring food security. In this research, winter wheat yield prediction models for six provinces were established using a random forest (RF) model. Two methods were employed to analyze feature variables. RF partial dependence plots were generated to demonstrate the nonlinear relationships between the feature variables and yield, and bivariate Moran’s I was considered to identify the spatial associations between variables. Results showed that when environmental data from key growth periods were used for prediction model establishment, the root mean square error (RMSE) varied between 200 and 700 kg/ha, and the coefficient of determination (R2) exceeded 0.5. Feature variable analysis results indicated that the longitude, latitude, topography and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were important variables. Below the threshold, the yield gradually increased with increasing NDVI. Bivariate Moran’s I results showed that there was zonal distribution of meteorological elements. Within a large spatial range, the change in environmental variables due to the latitude and longitude should be accounted for in modeling, but the influence of collinearity between the feature variables should be eliminated via variable importance analysis.

Clouds are one of the major factors leading to the failure of optical remote sensing observations on Earth, and reconstructing the information loss caused by clouds in optical images has attracted significant attention. Existing methods primarily utilize multi-temporal optical images as references, which makes it challenging to reflect real-time information. Due to the cloud-penetrating capability of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging, SAR images can serve as reference images to capture real-time information during the cloud removal process. We propose a cloud removal method, DS2-SO-CR, that leverages multi-source data fusion using a conditional generative adversarial network (CGAN) combined with a residual network to effectively remove clouds from multi-cloud images. We used a CGAN model to obtain SAR-to-optical images, which are then input into a fusion residual network along with SAR images and cloudy optical images. This significantly enhances the richness and accuracy of the texture in the cloud-removed images. To ensure the preservation of cloud-free regions in cloudy images during the fusion process, we added a cloud detection component to the fusion network. The proposed method was validated on the SEN12MS-CR and HN-TS datasets, achieving the following accuracy metrics: PSNR of 30.48, SSIM of 0.892, MSE of 0.038, LPIPS of 0.146, and FID of 37.53. This study provides a reference for cloud removal in remote sensing imagery of cloudy regions, as well as support for monitoring geological disasters, vegetation, and land cover changes.
