Membrane-based processes are a promising technology in water and wastewater treatments, to supply clean and secure water. However, during membrane filtration, biofouling phenomena severely hamper the performance, leading to permanent detrimental impacts. Moreover, regular chemical cleaning is ineffective in the long-run for overcoming biofouling, because it weakens the membrane structure. Therefore, the development of a membrane material with superior anti-biofouling performance is seen as an attractive option. Hydrophilic-anti-bacterial precursor polyethylene glycol-silver nanoparticles (PEG-AgNPs) were synthesized in this study, using a sol-gel method, to mitigate biofouling on the polyethersulfone (PES) membrane surface. The functionalization of the PEG-AgNP hybrid material on a PES membrane was achieved through a simple blending technique. The PES/PEG-AgNP membrane was manufactured via the non-solvent induced phase separation method. The anti-biofouling performance was experimentally measured as the flux recovery ratio (FRR) of the prepared membrane, before and after incubation in E. coli culture for 48 h. Nanomaterial characterization confirmed that the PEG-AgNPs had hydrophilic-anti-bacterial properties. The substantial improvements in membrane performance after adding PEG-AgNPs were evaluated in terms of the water flux and FRR after the membranes experienced biofouling. The results showed that the PEG-AgNPs significantly increased the water flux of the PES membrane, from 2.87 L·m−2·h−1 to 172.84 L·m−2·h−1. The anti-biofouling performance of the PES pristine membrane used as a benchmark showed only 1% FRR, due to severe biofouling. In contrast, the incorporation of PEG-AgNPs in the PES membrane decreased live bacteria by 98%. It enhanced the FRR of anti-biofouling up to 79%, higher than the PES/PEG and PES/Ag membranes.

The disinfection of treated water is an important process to provide healthy water to the public. The chosen disinfection methods can vary depending on the water source, regulations, targeted microorganisms, operating conditions, capital costs and operation and maintenance costs. Another important factor for decision-makers is the environmental impacts caused by the disinfection process. This paper will reveal the life cycle assessment (LCA) of four different water disinfection scenarios at a municipal scale from the operational phase. A comparison is made between chlorination systems, two ultraviolet disinfection systems that use different types of lamps and an ozonation system. The results demonstrate that the UV disinfection system with low-pressure lamps had the lowest environmental impact across all categories, followed by chlorination. In contrast, the ozonation system and the UV disinfection system with LED lamps showed the highest impacts in all categories, primarily due to their high electricity consumption. Changes in the electricity mix had a substantial influence on the impact categories for all disinfection methods, but the gradation of the water disinfection methods was not that significant. Studies on the environmental impacts of the water disinfection process need to be carried out for larger flow rates to increase the information on this topic.

Even though nanofiber membranes have wide unique characteristics, such as high surface porosity, high flux ratios, and lower production costs, they still show some shortcomings in terms of irreversible clogging, large pore sizes, and nanofiber rupture during filtration. This paper addresses a study to overcome such limitations with simultaneous electrospinning technique. Two different types of nanofibers were collected on the same layer. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber membranes have lower pore size than polysulfone (PSU) nanofiber membranes, while PSU component allowed easier toughening since it requires lower temperature for mechanical improvement against fiber rupture. As a result, pore size of simultaneous nanofiber membranes was provided by PAN (around 0.8 μm), whereas heat treatment at 185°C improved the strength of nanofiber membranes against rupture during filtration. Wastewater and surface water were filtered for filtration characterization. For both, removal rates were great. Thermal treatment improved membranes against fiber rupture. While fibers of heat-treated membrane were not broken, non-heat-treated membranes’ fibers were broken and membrane disintegrated. But significant irreversible fouling was observed in wastewater filtration.

The application of separation technology using ultrafiltration/nanofiltration membranes for protein purification and concentration has grown rapidly in the last decade. Innovations to synthesize membranes with properties and performance that suit the characteristics of the feed solution have been and will keep developing. This study aims to examine the strategies to improve the performance of the Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) membrane for lactalbumin protein isolation. The PVDF polymer membrane was modified by adding Poloxamer 188 (Po1) copolymer and a combination of two types of nanocarbons, i.e., single-walled carbon nanotubes (S-CnT) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (M-CnT). The following membrane characteristics were examined: mechanical properties, morphological structure, porosity, elemental composition and functional groups, and surface hydrophilicity. The membrane’s filtration performance was analyzed in terms of its ability to pass water (flux) and concentrate lactalbumin protein. The results showed that the changes in the membrane morphological structure were clearly visible in the SEM test, which exposed more open membrane pores after adding Pol and S-CnT/M-CnT additives. The mechanical properties of the membrane also increased, as indicated by the increase in the tensile strength from 12.1 MPa to 16.07 MPa. In general, it was found that the composition of the PVDF/Pol/S-CnT/NMP polymer solutions resulted in better filtration performance compared to the membranes made of only the PVDF/NMP polymer solution.
