In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of photochemical reflectance index (PRI) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) for assessing water stress in maize for the purpose of developing remote sensing techniques for monitoring water deficits in crops. Leaf-level chlorophyll fluorescence and canopy-level PRI were measured concurrently over a maize field with five different irrigation treatments, ranging from 20% to 90% of the field capacity (FC). Significant correlations were found between leaf-level NPQ (NPQleaf) and the ratio of chlorophyll to carotenoid content (Chl/Car) (R2 = 0.71, p < 0.01) and between NPQleaf and the actual photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (ΔF/Fm′) (R2 = 0.81, p < 0.005). At the early growing stage, both canopy-level PRI and NPQleaf are good indicators of water stress (R2 = 0.65 and p < 0.05; R2 = 0.63 and p < 0.05, respectively). For assessment of extreme water stress on plant growth, a relationship is also established between the quantum yield of photochemistry in PSII (ΦP) and the quantum yield of fluorescence (ΦF) as determined from photochemical quenching (PQ) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQleaf) of excitation energy at different water stress levels. These results would be helpful in monitoring soil water stress on crops at large scales using remote sensing techniques.

Light use efficiency (LUE) models are widely used to estimate gross primary productivity (GPP), a dominant component of the terrestrial carbon cycle. Their outputs are very sensitive to LUE. Proper determination of this parameter is a prerequisite for LUE models to simulate GPP at regional and global scales. This study was devoted to investigating the ability of the photochemical reflectance index (PRI) to track LUE variations for a sub-tropical planted coniferous forest in southern China using tower-based PRI and GPP measurements over the period from day 101 to 275 in 2013. Both half-hourly PRI and LUE exhibited detectable diurnal and seasonal variations, and decreased with increases of vapor pressure deficit (VPD), air temperature (Ta), and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Generally, PRI is able to capture diurnal and seasonal changes in LUE. However, correlations of PRI with LUE varied dramatically throughout the growing season. The correlation was the strongest (R2 = 0.6427, p < 0.001) in July and the poorest in May. Over the entire growing season, PRI relates better to LUE under clear or partially cloudy skies (clearness index, CI > 0.3) with moderate to high VPD (>20 hPa) and high temperatures (>31 C). Overall, we found that PRI is most sensitive to variations in LUE under stressed conditions, and the sensitivity decreases as the growing conditions become favorable when atmosphere water vapor, temperature and soil moisture are near the optimum conditions.

This study evaluates the performance of structural, chlorophyll-based, and photochemical indices to detect maize water status and to assess production based on five years of field experiments (2013–2017) during the primary growth stages. We employed three categories of indicators, including water condition and productive and thermal indicators, to quantify the responses of summer maize under continuous water stress from drought to waterlogging conditions. Furthermore, we adopted several spectral indices to assess their sensitivity to three categories of metrics. The results showed the association is the best between the treatment level and Leaf Water Content (LWC). The waterlogging treatment influenced Leaf Water Potential (LWP) in moderate drought stress. Severe drought stress caused the strongest reduction in productivity from both Leaf Area Index (LAI) and chlorophyll content. In terms of sensitivity of various indices, red-edge-position (REP) was sensitive to maize water conditions LWP, LAI and chlorophyll content. Photochemical Reflectance Index (PRI) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) were the most and second most sensitive indices to productive indicators, respectively. The results also showed that no indices were capable of capturing the information of Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI).

Deep learning has a good capacity of hierarchical feature learning from unlabeled remote sensing images. In this study, the simple linear iterative clustering (SLIC) method was improved to segment the image into good quality super-pixels. Then, we used the convolutional neural network (CNN) to extract of water bodies from Sentinel-2 MSI data using deep learning technique. In the proposed framework, the improved SLIC method obtained the correct water bodies boundary by optimizing the initial clustering center, designing a dynamic distance measure, and expanding the search space. In addition, it is different from traditional extraction of water bodies methods that cannot achieve multi-level water bodies detection. Experimental results showed that this method had higher detection accuracy and robustness than other methods. This study was able to extract water bodies from remotely sensed images with deep learning and to conduct accuracy assessment.
