Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) techniques have become increasingly popular in remote sensing. GEOBIA has been claimed to represent a paradigm shift in remote sensing interpretation. Still, GEOBIA—similar to other emerging paradigms—lacks formal expressions and objective modelling structures and in particular semantic classification methods using ontologies. This study has put forward an object-based semantic classification method for high resolution satellite imagery using an ontology that aims to fully exploit the advantages of ontology to GEOBIA. A three-step workflow has been introduced: ontology modelling, initial classification based on a data-driven machine learning method, and semantic classification based on knowledge-driven semantic rules. The classification part is based on data-driven machine learning, segmentation, feature selection, sample collection and an initial classification. Then, image objects are re-classified based on the ontological model whereby the semantic relations are expressed in the formal languages OWL and SWRL. The results show that the method with ontology—as compared to the decision tree classification without using the ontology—yielded minor statistical improvements in terms of accuracy for this particular image. However, this framework enhances existing GEOBIA methodologies: ontologies express and organize the whole structure of GEOBIA and allow establishing relations, particularly spatially explicit relations between objects as well as multi-scale/hierarchical relations.

Many theoretical and experimental studies have been carried out in order to improve the efficiency and reduce labor for power line inspection, but problems related to stability, efficiency, and comprehensiveness still exist. This paper presents a multiple sensors platform method for overhead power line inspection based on the use of a large unmanned helicopter. Compared with the existing methods, multiple sensors can realize synchronized inspection on all power line components and surrounding objects within one sortie. Flight safety of unmanned helicopter, scheduling of sensors and exact tracking on power line components are very important aspects when using the proposed multiple sensors platform, therefore this paper introduces in detail the planning method for the flight path of the unmanned helicopter and tasks of the sensors before inspecting power lines, and the method used for tracking power lines and insulators automatically during the inspection process. To validate the method, experiments on a transmission line at Qingyuan in Guangdong Province were carried out, the results show that the proposed method is effective for power line inspection.

We propose the Point Cloud Tree Species Classification Network (PCTSCN) to overcome challenges in classifying tree species from laser data with deep learning methods. The network is mainly composed of two parts: a sampling component in the early stage and a feature extraction component in the later stage. We used geometric sampling to extract regions with local features from the tree contours since these tend to be species-specific. Then we used an improved Farthest Point Sampling method to extract the features from a global perspective. We input the intensity of the tree point cloud as a dimensional feature and spatial information into the neural network and mapped it to higher dimensions for feature extraction. We used the data obtained by Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Laser Scanning (UAVLS) to conduct tree species classification experiments of white birch and larch. The experimental results showed that in both the TLS and UAVLS datasets, the input tree point cloud density and the highest feature dimensionality of the mapping had an impact on the classification accuracy of the tree species. When the single tree sample obtained by TLS consisted of 1024 points and the highest dimension of the network mapping was 512, the classification accuracy of the trained model reached 96%. For the individual tree samples obtained by UAVLS, which consisted of 2048 points and had the highest dimension of the network mapping of 1024, the classification accuracy of the trained model reached 92%. TLS data tree species classification accuracy of PCTSCN was improved by 2–9% compared with other models using the same point density, amount of data and highest feature dimension. The classification accuracy of tree species obtained by UAVLS was up to 8% higher. We propose PCTSCN to provide a new strategy for the intelligent classification of forest tree species.

Remote sensing (RS) image segmentation is an essential step in geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) to ultimately derive “meaningful objects”. While many segmentation methods exist, most of them are not efficient for large data sets. Thus, the goal of this research is to develop an efficient parallel multi-scale segmentation method for RS imagery by combining graph theory and the fractal net evolution approach (FNEA). Specifically, a minimum spanning tree (MST) algorithm in graph theory is proposed to be combined with a minimum heterogeneity rule (MHR) algorithm that is used in FNEA. The MST algorithm is used for the initial segmentation while the MHR algorithm is used for object merging. An efficient implementation of the segmentation strategy is presented using data partition and the “reverse searching-forward processing” chain based on message passing interface (MPI) parallel technology. Segmentation results of the proposed method using images from multiple sensors (airborne, SPECIM AISA EAGLE II, WorldView-2, RADARSAT-2) and different selected landscapes (residential/industrial, residential/agriculture) covering four test sites indicated its efficiency in accuracy and speed. We conclude that the proposed method is applicable and efficient for the segmentation of a variety of RS imagery (airborne optical, satellite optical, SAR, high-spectral), while the accuracy is comparable with that of the FNEA method.

Large-scale coastal reclamation has caused significant changes in Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora) distribution in coastal regions of China. However, few studies have focused on estimation of the wetland vegetation biomass, especially of S. alterniflora, in coastal regions using LiDAR and hyperspectral data. In this study, the applicability of LiDAR and hypersectral data for estimating S. alterniflora biomass and mapping its distribution in coastal regions of China was explored to attempt problems of wetland vegetation biomass estimation caused by different vegetation types and different canopy height. Results showed that the highest correlation coefficient with S. alterniflora biomass was vegetation canopy height (0.817), followed by Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) (0.635), Atmospherically Resistant Vegetation Index (ARVI) (0.631), Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI) (0.599), and Ratio Vegetation Index (RVI) (0.520). A multivariate linear estimation model of S. alterniflora biomass using a variable backward elimination method was developed with R squared coefficient of 0.902 and the residual predictive deviation (RPD) of 2.62. The model accuracy of S. alterniflora biomass was higher than that of wetland vegetation for mixed vegetation types because it improved the estimation accuracy caused by differences in spectral features and canopy heights of different kinds of wetland vegetation. The result indicated that estimated S. alterniflora biomass was in agreement with the field survey result. Owing to its basis in the fusion of LiDAR data and hyperspectral data, the proposed method provides an advantage for S. alterniflora mapping. The integration of high spatial resolution hyperspectral imagery and LiDAR data derived canopy height had significantly improved the accuracy of mapping S. alterniflora biomass.

Automatic power line extraction from aerial images of unmanned aerial vehicles is one of the key technologies of power line inspection. However, the faint power line targets and complex image backgrounds make the extraction of power lines a greater challenge. In this paper, a new power line extraction method is proposed, which has two innovative points. Innovation point one, based on the introduction of the Mask RCNN network algorithm, proposes a block extraction strategy to realize the preliminary extraction of power lines with the idea of “part first and then the whole”. This strategy globally reduces the anchor frame size, increases the proportion of power lines in the feature map, and reduces the accuracy degradation caused by the original negative anchor frames being misclassified as positive anchor frames. Innovation point two, the proposed connected domain group fitting algorithm solves the problem of broken and mis-extracted power lines even after the initial extraction and solves the problem of incomplete extraction of power lines by background texture interference. Through experiments on 60 images covering different complex image backgrounds, the performance of the proposed method far exceeds that of commonly used methods such as LSD, Yolact++, and Mask RCNN. DSCPL, TPR, precision, and accuracy are as high as 73.95, 81.75, 69.28, and 99.15, respectively, while FDR is only 30.72. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has good performance and can accomplish the task of power line extraction under complex image backgrounds. The algorithm in this paper solves the main problems of power line extraction and proves the feasibility of the algorithm in other scenarios. In the future, the dataset will be expanded to improve the performance of the algorithm in different scenarios.
