The level‐1 (L1) radiance spectra from the first Geostationary Interferometric InfraRed Sounder (GIIRS) have been publicly available since January 2019. On account of the inherent observation characteristics, operation modes, and capabilities, a complete spectrum calibration method of GIIRS/L1 products is originally proposed to form the latest version (V3) algorithm for implementation. Particularly, four targeted improvements in three aspects are independently established: subsample location alignment to yield integrated interferograms in both forward and backward directions with almost zero phase, rough spectral scale unification as well as accurate spectral scale correction to resolve spectral non‐uniformity due to a seriously asymmetric configuration of focal plane array, and an additional double‐reflected compensation to mitigate the influence of non‐ideal onboard blackbody reference upon radiometric accuracy. Preliminary assessments from both domestic and international sources indicate that the spectral and radiometric accuracies of the measured spectra from the latest GIIRS/L1 V3 algorithm show a well‐behaved performance in both longwave (LW) and midwave (MW) bands, that is, lower than 10 ppm of spectral scale errors, which is of sufficient accuracy for numerical weather prediction use, and around 1 K for most uncontaminated channels within the LW band. However, non‐linearity correction of interferograms and spectral quality improvements, especially for the MW band, should be developed further. In general, a feasible solution of spectrum calibration for a hyperspectral sounder on geostationary platform is provided in detail for reference, which is expected to benefit users of GIIRS data as well as designers responsible for L1 data processing of other similar sensors.

In our study, a retrieval method of temperature profiles is proposed which combines an improved one-dimensional variational algorithm (1D-Var) and artificial neural network algorithm (ANN), using FY-4A/GIIRS (Geosynchronous Interferometric Infrared Sounder) infrared hyperspectral data. First, according to the characteristics of the FY-4A/GIIRS observation data using the conventional 1D-Var, we introduced channel blacklists and discarded the channels that have a large negative impact on retrieval, then used the information capacity method for channel selection and introduced a neural network to correct the satellite observation data. The improved 1D-Var effectively used the observation information of 1415 channels, reducing the impact of the error of the satellite observation and radiative transfer model, and realizing the improvement of retrieval accuracy. We subsequently used the improved 1D-Var and ANN algorithms to retrieve the temperature profiles, respectively, from the GIIRS data. The results showed that the accuracy when using ANN is better than using improved 1D-Var in situations where the pressure ranges from 800 hPa to 1000 hPa. Therefore, we combined the improved 1D-Var and ANN method to retrieve temperature profiles for different pressure levels, calculating the error by taking sounding data published by the University of Wyoming as the true values. The results show that the average error of the retrieved temperature profiles is smaller than 2 K when using our method, this method makes the accuracy of the retrieved temperature profiles superior to the accuracy of the GIIRS products from 10 hPa to 575 hPa. All in all, through the combination of the physical retrieval method and the machine learning retrieval method, this paper can certainly provide a reference for improving the accuracy of products.

Radiometric calibration (RC) is an essential solution to guarantee measurements from infrared photonic sensors with certain accuracy, the main task of which is to determine the radiometric responsivity of sensor and usually be solved by comparing with some radiation source (i.e., blackbody), called source-based RC (SBRC). In addition to the complexity in manufacture, the nonideal characteristics of an available source will inevitably introduce unexpected uncertainties to reduce the final calibration accuracy by around 0.2–0.5 K in SBRC. Therefore, we propose an original source-independent RC (SIRC) principle based on modeling instead of comparing for SBRC, where the incident background radiation to detector, as a dominated factor influencing the responsivity characteristics of a photonic sensor, is modeled to implement RC for both two fundamental types (photoconductive and photovoltaic) of HgCdTe photonic detectors. The SIRC merely requires the temperature information of main components of a sensor other than some complex source and its assembly, and provides a traceable way at lower uncertainty costs relative to the traditional SBRC. The SIRC is being implemented in Fengyun-2 satellites since 2019, which ensures a long-term stable service of Chinese geostationary meteorological satellites for the global observation system under the framework of World Meteorological Organization. Moreover, a 20-year-period traceable Fengyun-2 dataset to be recalibrated with SIRC will benefit the further climate applications.

FY-4A/GIIRS (Geosynchronous Interferometric Infrared Sounder) is the first infrared hyperspectral atmospheric vertical detector in geostationary orbit. Compared to other similar instruments, it has the advantages of high temporal resolution and stationary relative to the ground. Based on the characteristics of GIIRS observation data, we proposed a humidity profile retrieval method. We fully utilized the information provided by the observation and forecast data, and used the two-dimensional brightness temperature data with the dimension of time and optical spectrum as the input of the CNN (convolution neural network model). Then, the obtained brightness temperature data were shown to be more suitable as the input for the physical retrieval method for humidity than the conventional correction method, improving the accuracy of humidity profile retrieval. We performed two comparative experiments. The first experiment results indicate that, compared to ordinary linear correction and ANN (artificial neural network algorithm) correction, our revised observed brightness temperature data are much closer to the simulated brightness temperature obtained by inputting ERA5 reanalysis data into RTTOV (Radiative Transfer for TOVS). The results of the second experiment indicate that the accuracy of the humidity profile retrieved by our method is higher than that of conventional ANN and 1D-Var (one-dimensional variational algorithm). With ERA5 reanalysis data as the reference value, the RMSE (Root Mean Squared Error) of the humidity profiles by our method is less than 8.2% between 250 and 600 hPa. Our method holds the unique advantage of the high temporal resolution of GIIRS, improves the accuracy of humidity profile retrieval, and proves that the combination of machine learning and the physical method is a compelling idea in the field of satellite atmospheric remote sensing worthy of further exploration.

During the early stage of the G satellite of the Fengyun-2 series (FY-2G), severe cold biases up to ~2.3 K occur in its measurements in the 12.0 μm (IR2) band, which demonstrate time- and scene-dependent characteristics. Similar cold biases in water vapor and carbon dioxide absorption bands of other satellites are considered to be caused by either ice contamination (physical method) or spectral response function (SRF) shift (empirical method). Simulations indicate that this cold bias of FY-2G indeed suffers from equivalent SRF shift as a whole towards the longer wavelength direction. To overcome it, a novel approach combining both physical and empirical methods is proposed. With the possible ice thicknesses tested before launch, the ice contamination effect is alleviated, while the shape of the SRF can be modified in a physical way. The remaining unknown factors for cold bias are removed by shifting the convolved SRF with an ice transmittance spectrum. Two parameters, i.e., the ice thickness (5 μm) and the shifted value (+0.15 μm), are estimated by inter-calibration with reference instruments, and the modification coefficient is also calculated (0.9885) for the onboard blackbody calibration. Meanwhile, the updated SRF was released online on 23 March 2016. For the period between July 2015 and December 2016, the monthly biases of the FY-2G IR2 band remain oscillating around zero, the majorities (~89%) of which are within ±1.0 K, while its mean monthly absolute bias is around 0.6 K. Nevertheless, the cold bias phenomenon of the IR2 band no longer exists. The combination method can be referred by other corrections for cold biases.

Thanks to the recent advances in SIS (Space Information Science) and increasingly mature technologies, network simulations have attracted much attention, which play vital roles in research on validation of the correctness of SIN's (Space Information Network) solutions. In this paper, we constitute an architecture of a hardware-in-the-loop simulation system, where we use a server to act as a real satellite of SINs. Moreover, we model the channel of the satellite network relying on real cables and servers by referring to the Corazza model. Furthermore, based on the data of real weather events, we propose a coordinate mode for reducing LEO's (Low Earth Orbit) communication delay and validate the efficiency of our proposed method on simulation platform by simplifying the problem to a shortest path problem.
