By collecting surface sediment samples from 158 stations in the near-shore waters of eastern Guangdong, grain size analysis and grain size parameter calculations were performed to explore the characteristics and migration trends of surface sediments in the area. The analysis of the grain size results showed that the surface sediments in the nearshore waters of east Guangdong could be classified into nine sediment types, mainly including seven types of gravel sand ((g)S), gravel muddy sand ((g)mS), gravelly mud ((g)M), sand (S), silty sand (zS), sandy silt (sZ) and silt (Z). The relative percentages of gravel, sand, silt and mud were 0.7%, 40.56%, 46.7% and 12.04%, respectively. The average grain size varied from −2φ to 8φ, with an average of 4.94φ. The selection coefficient ranged from 0.44 to 3.78, with an average value of 1.8. The skewness distribution ranged from −0.34 to 0.67, with an average value of 0.07. By extracting and analyzing the spatial distribution information of grain size in the study area, using the Gao–Collins migration trend analysis method and incorporating dynamic factors such as tidal currents and waves, the transport direction and trend of surface sediments in the study area could be analyzed and inferred. The results show that the surface sediment migration trend was significant, migration on the north side of Nan’ao Island was in an east-to-west direction, and the sediment of Yifeng River was mainly deposited to the sand spout at the mouth of Lianyang River. After southward transport from the Houjiang waterway, the migration was mainly southeastward and the trend was quite significant until the 20 m isobath, where the trend gradually decreased. The sediments of the Rongjiang River were mainly deposited outside the mouth of Niutian Yang and Rongjiang River, and the surface sediments of Guang’ao Bay and Haimen Bay migrated in the northwest–southeast direction. After the 30 m isobath, the southeast corner of the study area migrated in the southeast–south direction. This sediment transport pattern revealed by the grain size migration trend is in good agreement with the physical and hydrodynamic conditions of the study area and provides an important reference for decisions regarding port dredging and waterway management in the area.

This study introduces an integrated sand transport model that considers wave and current actions alongside variable grain properties to explore sediment dynamics in river deltas. The research delves into a case study of a river delta region, examining sediment transport over a substantial stretch of the river's lower course. The study incorporates topographic data, sediment sampling, and remote sensing to validate the model against observed suspended sediment concentrations at a key monitoring station. The results reveal substantial sediment deposition in both the estuary and lower reaches of the river, influenced by hydrodynamic conditions and geological settings. Deposition patterns in the estuary are primarily driven by coastal currents and wave action, while river channel deposition is linked to river constriction and flow velocity variations. The study demonstrates that the residual current in the region consistently flows towards a nearby bay, suggesting that sediment in the lower reaches of the river will be directed by this residual flow. The study underscores the pivotal roles of current and wave action in sediment transport within a multi-branched estuary characterized by low sediment concentrations, which can inform coastal management and environmental planning.

The coastline of Shantou is tortuous, while the hydrodynamic environment is complicated. In this paper, the hydrodynamic model is established by the FVCOM (Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model); the open boundary conditions such as water level, river, and wind field are the input; and the model is verified by tidal harmonic function. According to the previous research, the typhoon wind field with a 10-year return period is selected for storm surge simulation. When there is a bank, the accumulated water on the land cannot enter the ocean due to the block of the bank but accumulates on the inner side of the bank, resulting in higher accumulated water, but less than 0.5 m. In the aspect of sediment deposition, a sediment transport model is established to analyze the sediment deposition in Shantou Port and its surrounding waters. Some reasonable suggestions are put forward for the sediment deposition in Shantou. According to the simulation results, the following conclusions can be drawn: (1) In the case of typhoon storm surge in the return period of 10 years, the bank can effectively protect the inland. Still, accumulated water will collect near the bank. (2) The offshore water level will rise by 0.4 m after adding a bank. (3) The sediment in Shantou Bay mainly comes from the ocean sediment caused by tides, and the largest sedimentation occurs in the main channel.

This study conducted an in-depth analysis of the sediment dynamics in the lower reaches of the Changhua River and its estuary on Hainan Island. Through field collection of topographic data and sediment sampling, combined with advanced computational techniques, the study explored the transport pathways and depositional patterns of sediments. The grain size trend analysis (GSTA) method was utilized, in conjunction with the Flemming triangle diagram method, to classify the dynamic environment of the sediments. Furthermore, hydrodynamic modeling results were integrated to further analyze the transport trends of the sediments. The study revealed that the sediment types in the research area are complex, primarily consisting of gravelly sand and sandy gravel, indicating a generally coarse sedimentary environment in the region. The sediments in the lower reaches of the Changhua River generally transport towards the south and southwest (in the direction of Beili Bay). The net sediment transport directions inferred from the GSTA model are largely consistent with the Eulerian residual flow patterns, especially in the offshore area, where discrepancies are observed in the nearshore zone. The nearshore transport is influenced by the combined effects of alongshore currents, residual flows, and river inputs, while the offshore transport exhibits a shift from the northwest to southwest directions, reflecting the regional circulation patterns.

This study presents an integrated sand transport model that accounts for both wave and current actions, along with non-constant grain properties, to investigate sediment dynamics in the lower reaches of rivers. Taking the downstream and estuary of the Changhua River in Hainan Island as a case study, topographic data and sediment sampling were conducted in the field, complemented by remote sensing techniques. The model was rigorously validated using theoretical and empirical methods, demonstrating excellent agreement with observed suspended sediment concentrations at the Baoqiao Station. The findings indicate significant sediment deposition in the estuary and lower reaches of the Changhua River, influenced by a combination of hydrodynamic conditions and geological settings. Deposition in the estuary is primarily affected by the northeast-southwest coastal currents and wave action, while deposition in the river channel is associated with river constriction and variations in flow velocity. The models and methods developed in this study provide a scientific basis for sediment management and coastal evolution in similar downstream riverine environments and discuss the feasible scheme of sediment control in the downstream of Changhua River.
