To clarify the temporal dynamics of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection in dromedary camels, specimens were collected at 1–2 month intervals from 2 independent groups of animals during April 2013–May 2014 in Al-Ahsa Province, Saudi Arabia, and tested for MERS-CoV RNA by reverse transcription PCR. Of 96 live camels, 28 (29.2%) nasal swab samples were positive; of 91 camel carcasses, 56 (61.5%) lung tissue samples were positive. Positive samples were more commonly found among young animals (4 years of age). The proportions of positive samples varied by month for both groups; detection peaked during November 2013 and January 2014 and declined in March and May 2014. These findings further our understanding of MERS-CoV infection in dromedary camels and may help inform intervention strategies to reduce zoonotic infections.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation with black cumin seed meal (BCSM) and coconut meal (CM) on the performance and cecal microbiota of Cobb 500 hybrid broilers. The study was conducted on 600 chicks on the first day of hatching; the chicks were randomly distributed equally into 12 equal-sized floor pens. Four dietary treatments (C, T1, T2 and T3) were replicated three times (50 chicks/replicate): C was the control group; T1 was supplemented with 10% BCSM; T2 was supplemented with 10% CM; T3 was supplemented with 5% BCSM and 5% CM. At slaughter age on day 35, our findings showed that treatment T2 increased significantly body weight and feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to C, T1 and T3. In addition, the hot carcass dressing percentages in treatments T1, T2, and T3 were significantly higher than that of the C group. The results of relative normalized comparative gene expression of Clostridioides difficile, Roseburia and Streptococcus were not significantly changed in all treatments (p > 0.05). Treatment T1 resulted in a significant decrease in gene expression of the entire microbiota, while treatment T2 resulted in a significant increase in gene expression of all microbes, leading to an enriched and diverse microbial community. It can be concluded that supplementation with 10% BCSM is beneficial in inhibiting pathogenic microbes during early post-hatch days. In contrast, CM may promote and enhance the diversity of microbial communities during broiler growth. The inclusion of non-conventional feed ingredients in poultry diets may improve growth performance and may reduce the cost of broiler feed.

The objective of this study was to elucidate the optimum protocol timing of thermal manipulation (TM) during embryogenesis, which underline genetic improvement of muscle thermotolerance acquisition. An outbreak of suspected malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) was investigated by molecular and histopathological assays. Of the 70 Holstein beef calf herds, 14 were affected by multiple clinical signs suggestive of MCF infection. These beef calves were housed next to sheep flocks. In the complete blood count, the 14 affected calves had severe anaemia with leucopaenia, lymphopaenia and neutropaenia. Upon PCR amplification using a hemi-nested PCR assay for the detection of the Ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2), bovine tissue samples from the mesenteric lymph nodes and spleen and ovine blood samples were shown to be positive with the expected PCR bands amplified. Direct sequencing of the hemi-nested PCR product confirmed the identity of the causative virus as OvHV-2. The histopathological findings confirmed the clinical and laboratory diagnosis of MCF. Collective clinical, PCR and histopathological data confirmed the identity of this outbreak to be a sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (SA-MCF).

This study aimed to determine the optimum timing of embryonic thermal manipulation (TM) that may result in improvement of mRNA expression of myogenic upstream activation factors viz. Wnt family member-3 (Wnt-3), sonic hedgehog gene (Shh), proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and paired-box transcription factor-7 (Pax-7) during development and histogenesis of broiler muscle. Fertile eggs (1440) were divided randomly and equally into 5 treatment groups including control (no TM) and four treatment groups (TM1, TM2 TM3 and TM4) that were daily subjected to 39 ̊C for 18 h with 65% relative humidity during embryonic days ED 7–11, ED 11–15, ED 15–18 and ED 7–18 respectively. Pectoral and thigh muscle mRNA expressions of myogenic upstream activation factors were evaluated by semi-quantitative real-time RT-PCR. Out of TM conditions that were investigated, TM1 resulted in a significant improvement of Wnt-3, Shh, PCNA and Pax-7 expressions in broiler pectoral and thigh muscles during embryonic and post-hatch life when compared to the control. Thus, thermal manipulation during early embryongenesis (embryonic days ED 7-11) enhance broiler skeletal muscle myoblast proliferation by triggering and inducing transcription factors that regulates myogenesis and subsequently may lead to improve cell number and size of skeletal muscle. The outcome of this study indicates that TM during ED7-11 improved muscle response to heat stress, was safe to the pectoral and thigh muscles and this method may enhance myogenesis and muscle growth in a positive manner.
