The discovery of an effective airway inflammation marker which correctly identifies the condition and phenotype of asthma still constitutes a significant challenge. The determination of NLR, that is, the ratio of neutrophils to lymphocytes, would overcome this challenge. The role of the neutrophil–lymphocytic index in the diagnosis of specific types of asthma is investigated in the present study. The results of laboratory tests of 482 pediatric patients were used for the analysis. The results of 107 children without allergic disease symptoms were selected for the control group. The mean NLR in patients with asthma was 3.42 ± 4.05, and in the control group it was 1.94 ± 1.91. The difference between the NLR in allergic and non-allergic asthma was statistically significant in the allergic asthma and control groups. There was no statistically significant difference between NLR and body temperature, BMI, and gender. The value of NLR was significantly higher in the blood of patients suffering from asthma compared to the control group. The NLR was the highest among patients with allergic asthma. The use of this blood test in daily practice may facilitate the diagnosis of asthma and differentiation between asthma types, especially when the results of other tests are inconclusive.

Endometriosis is a chronic disease, in which endometrial-like tissue is found outside the uterine cavity. Lesions are typically located in the true pelvis but can be found, in addition to extragenital endometriosis, in the respiratory system, the diaphragm, the pleura or the pericardium. As the extrauterine endometrial lesions undergo the menstrual cycle, they cause many symptoms, including pain, and besides infertility, they all mostly affect the quality of the patient’s life. Pharmacological management of endometriosis significantly increases in importance either as a first-line treatment or as a complementary therapy after surgery. Yet, current research on antagonists of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) has revealed their potential benefits in endometriosis treatment. Their mechanism of action is to down-regulate the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis and therefore induce a hypoestrogenic state. The resulting reduction of estrogen levels prevents disease progression and diminishes the recurrence rate after surgical removal of endometriosis. The present review summarizes recent reports of the role oral GnRH antagonists have as a significant treatment option for pain reduction in endometriosis patients.

Ukraine is at the forefront of one of the largest outbreaks of tuberculosis (TB) in Europe, including multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. Due to the ongoing armed conflict in this area, there is a significant number of refugees from Ukraine to other European countries. The aim of the study is to emphasize the essence of the problem of the increased incidence of tuberculosis, taking into account the impact of the armed conflict in Ukraine, resulting in the intensification of migration movements. A descriptive epidemiological method was used as the research method. The material was collected by analyzing source statistical data from WHO and statistical yearbooks of selected European countries. Particularly, Ukrainian refugees in Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia are at higher risk of contracting tuberculosis due to factors like migration stress, poor nutrition, and comorbidities. Epidemiological data from these countries show a rise in tuberculosis cases among foreigners, emphasizing the need for European specialists to be more vigilant in this unique situation, focusing on refugees and other vulnerable populations. More research and collaborative efforts are essential to closely monitor and prevent the severe outcomes of tuberculosis transmission.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients have a significantly increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). Despite the implementation of preventive measures and treatment of lipid disorders, as well as reduced use of glucocorticoids, CVD remains one of the leading causes of death in this patient group. It is crucial to develop an appropriate CVD risk assessment strategy that considers the distinctive characteristics of this patient population. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the methods used to assess CVD risk in SLE patients. It also presents effective strategies for the reduction of the effects of traditional and non-traditional risk factors for atherosclerosis.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 disease is still evolving and, despite the end of the acute phase of the pandemic, still poses a risk to public health. One of the very rare complications, occurring in less than 1% of children, is multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MISC). Due to the risk of thromboembolic complications as well as cardiac problems, MISC carries a number of life-threatening complications. We report a case of a 16-year-old boy who was hospitalized due to general weakness, fever, conjunctivitis, vomiting and diarrhoea. In view of the mother’s positive result of the SARS-CoV-2 test, the teenager underwent numerous laboratory tests. Taking into account the critical condition of the patient, anticoagulant and antipyretic treatment, steroids and IVIG were added. During hospitalisation, alarming symptoms occurred, including dysarthria, drooping corner of the mouth and muscle weakness on the right side. The magnetic resonance imaging showed changes characteristic of ischemic stroke. Further studies are needed to assess possible thrombotic complications in children after SARS-CoV-2 infection, and specialists should be more vigilant in paediatric patients presenting with such symptoms.

Bone cancers in children are uncommon, making up approximately 5,5 % of all pediatric cancers. Childhood cancers are characterized by rapid development, and any delay in diagnosis can lead to serious consequences and even be life-threatening. The most common malignant tumors in key practice are: osteosarcoma (OS) and Ewing sarcoma (EWS). OS and EWS in children and adolescents require integrated diagnostics and age-appropriate therapy to ensure the best possible treatment outcomes. In recent years, the survival rates of pediatric cancer patients have improved and, consequently, it is necessary to reduce the long-term, late effects of treatment in order to promote the reduction of the deterioration in quality of life caused by treatment and to ensure the best possible return to everyday life.
