Correlation and path coefficients analyses among fourteen morphological characters were studied in six advanced lines of Basmati rice and one commercial check namely BRRI Dhan 29. In general, genotypic correlation coefficients were higher than the corresponding phenotypic correlation coefficients suggesting that the environmental influence reduces the relationship between yield and yield contributing characters of rice. Correlation coefficient analysis showed significant positive correlation between plant height and panicle length at genotypic level. Number of filled spikelets/panicle showed significant positive correlation with yield at both genotypic and phenotypic levels but significant negative correlation was observed between plant height and yield. Number of effective tillers/plant had negative significant correlation with panicle length and with number of unfilled spikelets/panicle at genotypic level. Number of ineffective tillers/plant had significant negative correlation with 1000-seed weight at both genotypic and phenotypic levels. Path coefficient analysis revealed highest positive direct effect of number of filled spikelets/panicle on grain yield but plant height and number of unfilled spikelets/panicle had negative direct effect on grain.Bangladesh J. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is a popular nutritious vegetable crop grown in Malaysia and other parts of the world. However, fungal diseases such as anthracnose pose significant threats to tomato production by reducing the fruit quality and food value of tomato, resulting in lower market prices of the crop globally. In the present study, the etiology of tomato anthracnose was investigated in commercial tomato farms in Sabah, Malaysia. A total of 22 fungal isolates were obtained from anthracnosed tomato fruits and identified as Colletotrichum species, using morphological characteristics. The phylogenetic relationships of multiple gene sequence alignments such as internal transcribed spacer (ITS), β-tubulin (tub2), glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (gapdh), actin (act), and calmodulin (cal), were adopted to accurately identify the Colletotrichum species as C. truncatum. The results of pathogenicity tests revealed that all C. truncatum isolates caused anthracnose disease symptoms on inoculated tomato fruits. To our knowledge, the present study is the first report of tomato anthracnose caused by C. truncatum in Malaysia. The findings of this study will be helpful in disease monitoring, and the development of strategies for effective control of anthracnose on tomato fruits.

Bakanae disease has become a serious threat for sustainable rice production in Asian countries including Bangladesh. Fusarium species are important seedborne pathogens that cause bakanae disease of rice. Typical bakanae symptomatic samples were collected through a series of sampling conducted in several districts of Bangladesh for four consecutive years from 2019 to 2022. The pathogens were confirmed using morphological characteristics, DNA sequences, and phylogenetic analysis of two genes, namely, elongation translation factor 1-alpha (TEF1-α) and RNA polymerase subunit II (RPB2). A total of 121 Fusarium isolates were recovered from diseased rice samples at different geographical locations. The phylogenetic analysis of TEF1-α and RPB2 gene sequences coupled with morphological characterization revealed that the collected isolates belonged to five species, viz., F. fujikuroi (75.2% isolation frequency), F. incarnatum (17.35%), F. commune (4.95%), F. verticillioides (1.65%), and F. proliferatum (0.82%). The phylogenetic analysis also showed that 28 representative strains were attributed to five species. Finally, four Fusarium spp., namely, F. fujikuroi, F. commune, F. verticillioides, and F. proliferatum, were found to be pathogenic under virulence assays of the isolates. The pathogenicity test results demonstrated that F. fujikuroi caused typical symptoms of bakanae, leaf elongation, and chlorosis, whereas F. proliferatum and F. verticillioides only caused stunting of seedlings and F. commune caused wilt and root rot. F. incarnatum was found to be associated with bakanae disease of rice; however, their pathogenicity could not be established. This study provides insight into the diversity and pathogenicity of Fusarium populations associated with bakanae disease in Bangladesh, which will help in formulating effective strategies and policies for better control of the bakanae disease.
