Cotton (Gossypium spp.) is the best plant fiber source in the world and provides the raw material for industry. Verticillium wilt caused by Verticillium dahliae Kleb. is accepted as a major disease of cotton production. The most practical way to deal with verticillium wilt is to develop resistant/tolerant varieties after cultural practices. One of the effective selections in plant breeding is the use of marker-assisted selection (MAS) via quantitative trait loci (QTL). Therefore, in this study, we aimed to discover the genetic markers associated with the disease. Through the association mapping analysis, common single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers were obtained using 4730 SNP alleles. As a result, twenty-three markers were associated with defoliating (PYDV6 isolate) pathotype, twenty-one markers with non-defoliating (Vd11 isolate) pathotype, ten QTL with Disease Severity Index (DSI) of the leaves at the 50–60% boll opening period and eight markers were associated with DSI in the stem section. Some of the markers that show significant associations are located on protein coding genes such as protein Mpv17-like, 21 kDa protein-like, transcription factor MYB113-like, protein dehydration-induced 19 homolog 3-like, F-box protein CPR30-like, extracellular ribonuclease LE-like, putative E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase LIN, pentatricopeptide repeat-containing protein At3g62890-like, fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase, tubby-like F-box protein 8, endoglucanase 16-like, glucose-6-phosphate/phosphate translocator 2, metal tolerance protein 11-like, VAN3-binding protein-like, transformation/transcription domain-associated protein-like, pyruvate kinase isozyme A, ethylene-responsive transcription factor CRF2-like, molybdate transporter 2-like, IRK-interacting protein-like, glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor attachment 1 protein, U3 small nucleolar RNA-associated protein 4-like, microtubule-associated protein futsch-like, transport and Golgi organization 2 homolog, splicing factor 3B subunit 3-like, mediator of RNA polymerase II transcription subunit 15a-like, putative ankyrin repeat protein, and protein networked 1D-like. It has been reported in previous studies that most of these genes are associated with biotic and abiotic stress factors. As a result, once validated, it would be possible to use the markers obtained in the study in Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) breeding.

The cotton plant is important since it provides raw materials for various industry branches. Even though cotton is generally drought-tolerant, it is affected negatively by long-term drought stress. The trial was conducted according to the applied experimental design as a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications to determine a panel of 93 cotton genotypes’ genotypic responses against drought under controlled conditions in 2022. All genotypes were watered with 80 mL−1 of water (100% irrigation, field capacity) until three true leaves appeared, and then water stress was applied at a limited irrigation of 75% (60 mL−1), 50% (40 mL−1), and 25% (20 mL−1) of the field capacity. After the trial terminated at 52 days, the cv. G56, G44, G5, and G86 in RL; G1, G56, G44, G86, G51, and G88 in RFW; advanced line G5, followed by the cv. G56, advanced line G44, G75, and the cv. G90 in RDW; G44, followed by G86, the cv. G56, and elite lines G13 and G5 in NLRs were observed as drought-tolerant genotypes, respectively, while G35, G15, G26, G67, and G56 in SL; G15, G52, G60, G31, and G68 in SFW; G35, G52, G57, G41, and G60 in SDW show the highest drought tolerance means, respectively. In conclusion, the commercial varieties with high means in roots, namely G86, G56, G88, and G90, and the genotypes G67, G20, G60, and G57 showing tolerance in shoots, are suggested to be potential parent plants for developing cotton varieties resistant to drought. Using the cultivars found tolerant in the current study as parents in a drought-tolerant variety development marker-assisted selection (MAS) plant breeding program will increase the chance of success in reaching the target after genetic diversity analyses are performed. On the other hand, it is highly recommended to continue the plant breeding program with the G44, G30, G19, G1, G5, G75, G35, G15, G52, G29, and G76 genotypes, which show high tolerance in both root and shoot systems.

The potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), an important field crop consumed extensively worldwide, is adversely affected by abiotic stress factors especially drought. Therefore, it is vital to understand the genetic mechanism under drought stress to decrease loose of yield and quality . This trial aimed to screen drought-responsive gene expressions of potato and determine the drought-tolerant potato cultivar. The trial pattern is a completely randomized block design (CRBD) with four replications under greenhouse conditions. Four cultivars (Brooke, Orwell, Vr808, Shc909) were irrigated with four different water regimes (control and three stress conditions), and the gene expression levels of 10 potato genes were investigated. The stress treatments as follows: Control = 100% field capacity; slight drought = 75% field capacity; moderate drought = 50% field capacity, and severe drought 25% field capacity. To understand the gene expression under drought stress in potato genotypes, RT-qPCR analysis was performed and results showed that the genes most associated with drought tolerance were the StRD22 gene, MYB domain transcription factor, StERD7, Sucrose Synthase (SuSy), ABC Transporter, and StDHN1. The StHSP100 gene had the lowest genetic expression in all cultivars. Among the cultivars, the Orwell exhibited the highest expression of the StRD22 gene under drought stress. Overall, the cultivar with the highest gene expression was the Vr808, closely followed by the Brooke cultivar. As a result, it was determined that potato cultivars Orwell, Vr808, and Brooke could be used as parents in breeding programs to develop drought tolerant potato cultivars.

Upland cotton is the most widely cultivated among cotton species and is the best natural fiber source for the textile industry. However, abiotic stress, particularly drought stress, adversily affects important cotton planting regions. This study uses phenotypic drought markers to ascertain the tolerances of some advanced cotton lines under the limited irrigation conditions obtained from the drought-tolerant variety development breeding program. The study was conducted according to the randomized plot design with three replications. A total of 16 genotypes were used, with fourteen lines selected from the F2 segregation stage of the drought-tolerant variety breeding program, and two varieties used as control varieties. Variance analysis (ANOVA) was conducted, the differences between the means were found to be significant (P

Beekeeping is an agricultural activity that produces products such as honey, royal jelly and propolis, which can be done wherever there are flowers without being dependent on the soil. Global warming reduces honey productivity by causing honey bees to spend more time feeding and cooling their hives. This situation forces honeybees to make more efforts. Additionally, factors such as a decrease in the number of pollinators, pesticide use, and radiation effects can also reduce the honey bee population. These effects can make life difficult for bees and unfortunately reduce honey yield. Climate change affects the distribution of vegetation and flowers, restricting honey bees’ access to food resources. This leaves bees vulnerable to extreme weather conditions and causes flowers to bloom prematurely, making the task of pollination difficult. Because bees have difficulty adapting to these changing climatic conditions, they have difficulty feeding their hives during the winter months, which negatively affects the health of the colonies.

Medicinal aromatic plants are very important for human health. Due to the polyphenolic and phytochemical components they contain, they have antioxidant, antibacterial, anticancer, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. For this reason, it is the subject of scientific studies. Allium species are important medicinal and aromatic plants that include the commonly known onion and garlic species. There are many different species and the different biological activities of these species are determined by scientific studies. For this reason, in this chapter, the ethnobotanical characteristics and biological activities of important Allium species with current scientific studies are compiled. It is stated that some of these species have anticancer properties and their consumption will be beneficial for health.
