We demonstrate a simple and highly sensitive optical fiber relative humidity (RH) sensor based on a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) coated with polyethylene glycol (PEG)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite films. The resonance wavelength of the LPFG is sensitive to environmental humidity due to the change in effective refractive index caused by the strong surface absorption and desorption of the porous PEG/PVA coatings. The sensor is sensitive in a wide range from 50% to 95% RH, with a highest sensitivity of 2.485 nm/%RH in the range 50–75% RH. The proposed RH sensor has the advantages of compact size, good reversibility, and stability, which makes it attractive for high-humidity environments.

We have proposed and demonstrated a Michelson interferometer-based fiber sensor for detecting acoustic emission generated from the partial discharge (PD) of the accessories of a high-voltage cable system. The developed sensor head is integrated with a compact and relatively high sensitivity cylindrical elastomer. Such a sensor has a broadband frequency response and a relatively high sensitivity in a harsh environment under a high-voltage electric field. The design and fabrication of the sensor head integrated with the cylindrical elastomer is described, and a series of experiments was conducted to evaluate the sensing performance. The experimental results demonstrate that the sensitivity of our developed sensor for acoustic detection of partial discharges is 1.7 rad / ( m ⋅ Pa ) . A high frequency response up to 150 kHz is achieved. Moreover, the relatively high sensitivity for the detection of PD is verified in both the laboratory environment and gas insulated switchgear. The obtained results show the great potential application of a Michelson interferometer-based fiber sensor integrated with a cylindrical elastomer for in-situ monitoring high-voltage cable accessories for safety work.

We demonstrate the fabrication of helical long-period gratings (HLPGs) in a polarization-maintaining fiber using CO2-laser. The maximum polarization dependent loss (PDL) of the grating was measured to be more than 30 dB at the resonance wavelength. The HLPG was found to have a high refractive index sensitivity of -7248.6 nm/RIU when the surrounding refractive index changes in the range of 1.4470-1.4600, temperature sensitivity of 158.8 pm/°C, and strain sensitivity of 3.17 pm/μE. The twist sensitivities based on intensity variation were measured to be 5.98 dB/ (rad/m) (co-directional twist) and -5.97 dB/ (rad/m) (contra-directional twist), respectively. The demonstrated grating devices have promising applications as high-sensitivity fiber sensors, PDL compensator etc.

A PbS quantum dots (QDs) fiber amplifier was fabricated and characterized by using a standard single mode fiber (SMF) coupler. The fiber amplifier was fabricated by coating PbS QDs doped sol-gel films onto the tapered SMF coupler. Through the evanescent wave, the PbS quantum dots were excited. With a 980 nm wavelength laser diode (LD) as the pump, the fiber amplifier exhibited a wide band optical gain at 1310 nm with the largest gain as high as 10 dB. The amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise is very low resulted from the amplifier configuration of evanescent wave exciting, which is critical to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. Therefore the proposed fiber amplifier will find great potential in the fiber-optic communication systems.

Vortex beams have attracted much attention in recent years due to unique features of the phase or polarization singularity in the center part of beams. Various applications have been explored by the vortex beams including optical communication, optical tweezer, etc. Especially, the vortex beams for optical sensing applications have emerged. Compared with the traditional Gaussian beams, the vortex beams enable the optical sensing with the degree of freedom by controlling the spin and orbital phase and polarization. In this review article, we have discussed the theory of polarization and phase vortices, and then summarized the vortex beam generation in optical fiber and their sensing applications. It is hoped that the article can intrigue further research interest and development in fiber vortices for sensing applications.
