Titanium dioxide (TiO2), by its tribological behavior, is known as a solid lubricant. TiO2 as a solid lubricant, together with tungsten disulfide (WS2) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) decreases friction and excessive wear. By compacting TiO2 powder, pellets are formed. Studies and research on the solid lubricant coatings were conducted with success on a tribometer with the possibility of making two simultaneous contacts, pellet/disk, and slider pad/disk. On the disk of a tribometer, we studied the lubrication characteristics of the TiO2 powder particles as the third body by intentionally transferring. Results show that the TiO2 pellet behaved like an effective oil-free lubricant by self-repairing and self-replenishing. In experiments, a TiO2 pellet is intentionally sheared against the surface of the disk, while the slider pad slips loaded on the lubricated surface until the deposited powder film is exhausted. A theoretical model control volume fractional coverage (CVFC) was used to estimate both the wear rate for the lubricated pellet/disk sliding contact and the friction coefficient at the pad/disk separation surface. According to materials properties, disk velocity, pellet and slider pad load, the pellet wear rate, and slider pad friction coefficient, using the CVFC model, can establish the pellet wear rate, and slider pad friction coefficient. The fractional coverage represents a parameter of the CVFC model that varies with time, and it is useful for estimating the film amount from the third body that covers the disk asperities. Model results well enough describe the tribological behavior of the sliding contacts in experiments, both qualitatively and quantitatively. In addition, the theoretical results obtained by modeling and the experimental those obtained in the process of friction, are compared.

In agrotechnical practice, it was found that between qualitative indices, which express the sowing precision achieved by precision planters determined in the laboratory, and those determined under operating conditions, that there are certain differences, which are sometimes quite significant. The decrease in the value of the quality indices was manifested by the increase of the number of mistakes, either of the number of double planting holes (with at least two seeds), or of the number of missing planting holes. Both cases are unfavorable for the agricultural producer, generating production losses. This paper discusses the influence of the degree of soil grinding on sowing precision in operating conditions, by determining the spectrum of the vibrations induced in the mechanical structure of row units of a precision planter in contact with the soil of three different plots for three working speeds: 4, 6, and 8 km·h−1. Later, the vibrations were simulated under laboratory conditions, on the stand, by means of rubber hemispheres (with diameters between 30 and 100 mm, corresponding to soil fractions resulting from the determination of the degree of soil grinding) mounted on rubber bands, which actuated the seed meters, for testing under an accelerated regime, outside of the optimal agricultural periods (out of season: beginning mid-May until the end of March), in order to obtain the accuracy of the precision planters. It was found that the sowing precision determined in stationary conditions on the stand, and on a plot with an appropriate degree of seedbed preparation, decreased between 2.92% (at 4 km·h−1) and 6.67% (at 8 km·h−1). The main objective of the tests was to reduce labor costs, which was necessary for the staff involved for determining the qualitative indices of work in real field operating conditions, eliminating fuel consumption, while reducing the duration of testing dependent on meteorological factors (season, temperatures, and precipitation, etc.).

Heavy metals are naturally occurring elements, but their various applications have led to their wide circulation in the environment, raising concerns over their latent effects on the environment and human health. Their toxicity depends on numerous factors, including chemical species, concentration of heavy metal ions, environmental factors, etc. Experimental studies on the single or cumulative effects of heavy metals on plants are complex, time consuming and difficult to conduct. An alternative is mathematical modeling, which can include different factors into an integrated system and can predict plant and environmental behavior under multiple stressors. This paper presents a mathematical model that simulates the dependence of temperature, concentration of Zn in the soil and the subsequent bioaccumulation in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.); respectively, the reaction of lettuce to Zn contamination. The main results consist of three mathematical models, based on systems of ordinary differential equations and checking their predictions with available experimental data. The models are applied to predict an optimal harvest time of lettuce with low concentration of Zn, in identifying the availability of the analyzed species to phytoremediation operations and the possibility of maneuvering certain control factors to reduce or increase the intensity of the bioaccumulation process.

This paper provides a tribochemical study of the selective layer surface by chemical mechanical planarization (CMP). CMP is used to remove excess material obtained in the process of selective transfer. The paper aims at a better understanding of the planarization (polishing) and micromachining. The planarization becomes effective if the material removal rate (MRR) is optimal and the surface defects are minimal. The pH of the slurry plays a very important role in removing the selective layer by CMP, and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is the most common oxidizer used in CMP slurry. The purpose of this paper is the analysis of the pH effect on the etching rate (ER) and on the behavior of selective layer polishing by a constant concentration of H2O2 and the influence of nanoparticles size and concentration on selective layer surface CMP. The nanoparticle size used is 250 nm. The MRR results through CMP and ER have been shown to be influenced by the presence of oxides on the selective layer surface and have been found to vary with the slurry pH at constant H2O2 concentrations. The CMP slurry plays an important role in the CMP process performance and should be monitored for optimum results and minimal surface defects. The paper analyzes the impact of chemical-mechanical, inter-nanoparticle, and pad-nanoparticle-substrate interactions on CMP performance, taking into account the state of friction at the interface, by measuring the friction force. Selective layer CMP optimization studies were required to control the chemical and mechanical interactions at the interface between the slurry and the selective layer, the slurry chemistry, the properties, and the stability of the suspended abrasive nanoparticles.

The current study evaluated the effect of powder fractionation based on particle size on the chemical composition of macronutrients such as proteins and sugars, on the phytochemical properties (total content of polyphenolic compounds, vitamin C, and antioxidant activity), on preservation capacity (water activity), powder functional properties (water absorption capacity and water solubility index), and physicochemical properties (particle size distribution and moisture content) of blackthorn berry (Prunus spinosa) powders. The fruits were separated from the plant material and seeds, dried, and then ground using an universal mill for dry materials. Eight fractions were obtained after sieving on sieves with different mesh sizes, such as 1 mm, 0.8 mm, 0.630 mm, 0.450 mm, 0.315 mm, 0.200 mm, and 0.125 mm. The grinding/sieving procedure was effective in separating Prunus spinosa powder into sufficiently different size classes. The maximal moisture content and water activity were 5.61% and 0.250, respectively, showed good preservation from a microbiological point of view, and ensured the prevention of oxidation of biologically active compounds of blackthorn berry powders. For samples with reduced particle sizes, the powder functional properties were greatly improved. The total phenolic content, carbohydrates, and antioxidant activity showed significantly different values for some particle size classes compared to the un-sieved sample. A considerable content of vitamin C was presented in the fraction with large particle sizes, precisely because they did not undergo intense degradation processes. Therefore, the technique of grinding and successive sieving proved effective in enhancing the physicochemical and functional characteristics of powdered blackthorn berries, particularly for smaller particles.
