Multitenant cellular network slicing has been gaining huge interest recently. However, it is not well-explored under the heterogeneous cloud radio access network (H-CRAN) architecture. This paper proposes a dynamic network slicing scheme for multitenant H-CRANs, which takes into account tenants' priority, baseband resources, fronthaul and backhaul capacities, quality of service (QoS) and interference. The framework of the network slicing scheme consists of an upper-level, which manages admission control, user association and baseband resource allocation; and a lower-level, which performs radio resource allocation among users. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve a higher network throughput, fairness and QoS performance compared to several baseline schemes.

The deployment of 5G has exposed capacity constraints in realizing the key vision of the Internet of Everything (IoE). Therefore, the researchers are exploring potentials of Digital Twin Network (DTN) in wireless networks. DTN is a novel technology to create virtual replicas of physical environment for testing, optimizing, and managing wireless networks. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and DTN appears to be a promising approach to address communication systems by providing an efficient environment for testing and improving AI models before deployment in real networks for effective network management, optimal resource allocation, and precise behavior prediction. Therefore, AI-enabled DTN in 6G represents a compelling avenue to address multifaceted challenges faced by wireless networks. In this comprehensive work, we offer a holistic survey that delves into the state-of-the-art approaches for AI-enabled DTNs in 6G. Firstly, we discuss the evolution of wireless networks and concept of AI-enabled DTN in 6G. Secondly, we discuss the role of AI-enabled DTN in 6G and driving advancements in fundamental components of 6G including resource allocation, caching, data offloading, and data security. Thirdly, we conduct a detailed discussion on key enabling technologies for realizing the capabilities of AI-enabled DTN in 6G. Fourthly, several applications of AI-enabled DTN in 6G are discussed for the practical relevance and significance in various industries such as smart cities, healthcare, and transportation etc. Finally, we provide lessons learned and highlight existing challenges and research directions to embark on further research efforts in the realm of AI-enabled DTN in 6G.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in 6G demonstrates a transformative leap in redefining network efficiency, intelligence, and adaptability. However, AI largely leverages discriminative models relying on labelled and quality data, where data accessibility remains serious concern. Generative AI (GenAI) has gained traction due to its immense potential in resolving the issue of data scarcity, complexity, and incompleteness. GenAI models excel in understanding underlying data distributions, enabling them to generate synthetic data that mirrors real-world patterns. GenAI supports adaptive learning and scenario modeling, making it indispensable for addressing the unpredictability and complexity inherent in 6G networks. Since the complexity of wireless communication systems is increasing and the demand for such systems is growing, GenAI presents new ideas for enhancing network performance, increasing system efficiency, and developing intelligent decision-making capabilities. This survey paper investigates the promising role of GenAI in the evolution of 6G networks. An in-depth discussion of notable GenAI models is presented, outlining their application in enhancing key network components. Specifically, the application of GenAI in advanced technologies including reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), digital twins (DTs), and integrated sensing and communications (ISACs) is thoroughly investigated with respect to optimize the adaptability, flexibility, and robustness of the wireless networks. Moreover, use cases of GenAI-enabled wireless networks are presented to highlight the realization of GenAI in 6G. The paper also presents the lessons learned, existing challenges, and future research directions. This paper systematically explores GenAI and its pivotal role in the development of 6G, providing a foundation for researchers to further investigate and advance GenAI-enabled 6G.

The explosive growth of IP networks, the advent of cloud computing, and the rapid progress in wireless communications witnessed today reflect significant progress towards meeting the explosive data traffic demands. Consequently, communications service providers should deploy efficient and intelligent network solutions to accommodate the huge traffic demands and to ease the capacity pressure on their network infrastructure. Besides, vendors should develop novel energy-efficient networks to reduce network utility costs and carbon footprint. Software-defined networking (SDN) provides a suitable solution, however, complete SDN deployment is currently unachievable in the short-term. An alternative is the hybrid SDN/ open shortest path forwarding (OSPF) network, which allows the deployment of SDN in legacy networks. Nevertheless, hybrid SDN/OSPF also faces several technical, economic and organizational challenges. Although many energy-efficiency routing solutions exist in hybrid SDN/OSPF networks, they are generic and reactive by design. Moreover, these solutions are characterized by manual control plane forwarding configurations, leading to sub-optimal performance. The recent promising combination of SDN and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques such as machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) in traffic management and control provides tremendous opportunities. In this paper, we first provide a review of the most recent optimization approaches for global energy-efficient routing and load balancing. Next, we investigate a scalable and intelligent integrated architectural framework that leverages deep reinforcement learning (DRL) techniques to realize predictive and rate adaptive energy-efficient routing with guaranteed quality of service (QoS), in transitional hybrid SDN/OSPF networks. Based on the need to minimize global network energy consumption and improve link performance, this paper provides key research insights into the current progress in hybrid SDN/OSPF, ML and AI in the hope of stimulating more research.

This paper addresses the user association problem for quality of service (QoS) provisioning and backhaul load balancing (LB) in heterogeneous networks (HetNets). This problem is exacerbated by base stations with different backhaul capacities and users with diverse QoS requirements. A user association scheme is proposed to achieve QoS provisioning and backhaul LB for HetNets. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms conventional user association schemes in terms of call blocking probability, QoS, and backhaul LB.
