The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) has revolutionized healthcare with remote patient monitoring and real-time diagnosis, but securing patient data remains a critical challenge due to sophisticated cyber threats and the sensitivity of medical information. Traditional machine learning methods struggle to capture the complex patterns in IoMT data, and conventional intrusion detection systems often fail to identify unknown attacks, leading to high false positive rates and compromised patient data security. To address these issues, we propose RCLNet, an effective Anomaly-based Intrusion Detection System (A-IDS) for IoMT. RCLNet employs a multi-faceted approach, including Random Forest (RF) for feature selection, the integration of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models to enhance pattern recognition, and a Self-Adaptive Attention Layer Mechanism (SAALM) designed specifically for the unique challenges of IoMT. Additionally, RCLNet utilizes focal loss (FL) to manage imbalanced data distributions, a common challenge in IoMT datasets. Evaluation using the WUSTL-EHMS-2020 healthcare dataset demonstrates that RCLNet outperforms recent state-of-the-art methods, achieving a remarkable accuracy of 99.78%, highlighting its potential to significantly improve the security and confidentiality of patient data in IoMT healthcare systems.

The domestication of animals and the cultivation of crops have been essential to human development throughout history, with the agricultural sector playing a pivotal role. Insufficient nutrition often leads to plant diseases, such as those affecting rice crops, resulting in yield losses of 20–40% of total production. These losses carry significant global economic consequences. Timely disease diagnosis is critical for implementing effective treatments and mitigating financial losses. However, despite technological advancements, rice disease diagnosis primarily depends on manual methods. In this study, we present a novel self-attention network (SANET) based on the ResNet50 architecture, incorporating a kernel attention mechanism for accurate AI-assisted rice disease classification. We employ attention modules to extract contextual dependencies within images, focusing on essential features for disease identification. Using a publicly available rice disease dataset comprising four classes (three disease types and healthy leaves), we conducted cross-validated classification experiments to evaluate our proposed model. The results reveal that the attention-based mechanism effectively guides the convolutional neural network (CNN) in learning valuable features, resulting in accurate image classification and reduced performance variation compared to state-of-the-art methods. Our SANET model achieved a test set accuracy of 98.71%, surpassing that of current leading models. These findings highlight the potential for widespread AI adoption in agricultural disease diagnosis and management, ultimately enhancing efficiency and effectiveness within the sector.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a lethal blood cancer that is characterized by an abnormal increased number of immature lymphocytes in the blood or bone marrow. For effective treatment of ALL, early assessment of the disease is essential. Manual examination of stained blood smear images is current practice for initially screening ALL. This practice is time-consuming and error-prone. In order to effectively diagnose ALL, numerous deep-learning-based computer vision systems have been developed for detecting ALL in blood peripheral images (BPIs). Such systems extract a huge number of image features and use them to perform the classification task. The extracted features may contain irrelevant or redundant features that could reduce classification accuracy and increase the running time of the classifier. Feature selection is considered an effective tool to mitigate the curse of the dimensionality problem and alleviate its corresponding shortcomings. One of the most effective dimensionality-reduction tools is principal component analysis (PCA), which maps input features into an orthogonal space and extracts the features that convey the highest variability from the data. Other feature selection approaches utilize evolutionary computation (EC) to search the feature space and localize optimal features. To profit from both feature selection approaches in improving the classification performance of ALL, in this study, a new hybrid deep-learning-based feature engineering approach is proposed. The introduced approach integrates the powerful capability of PCA and particle swarm optimization (PSO) approaches in selecting informative features from BPI mages with the power of pre-trained CNNs of feature extraction. Image features are first extracted through the feature-transfer capability of the GoogleNet convolutional neural network (CNN). PCA is utilized to generate a feature set of the principal components that covers 95% of the variability in the data. In parallel, bio-inspired particle swarm optimization is used to search for the optimal image features. The PCA and PSO-derived feature sets are then integrated to develop a hybrid set of features that are then used to train a Bayesian-based optimized support vector machine (SVM) and subspace discriminant ensemble-learning (SDEL) classifiers. The obtained results show improved classification performance for the ML classifiers trained by the proposed hybrid feature set over the original PCA, PSO, and all extracted feature sets for ALL multi-class classification. The Bayesian-optimized SVM trained with the proposed hybrid PCA-PSO feature set achieves the highest classification accuracy of 97.4%. The classification performance of the proposed feature engineering approach competes with the state of the art.

Concerning the oversight and safeguarding of aquatic environments, it is necessary to ascertain the quantity of fish, their size, and their distribution. Many deep learning (DL), artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) techniques have been developed to oversee and safeguard the fish species. Still, all the previous work had some limitations, such as a limited dataset, only binary class categorization, only employing one technique (ML/DL), etc. Therefore, in the proposed work, the authors develop an architecture that will eliminate all the limitations. Both DL and ML techniques were used in the suggested framework to identify and categorize multiple classes of the salinity and freshwater fish species. Two different datasets of fish images with thirteen fish species were employed in the current research. Seven CNN architectures were implemented to find out the important features of the fish images. Then, seven ML classifiers were utilized in the suggested work to identify the binary class (freshwater and salinity) of fish species. Following that, the multiclass classification of thirteen fish species was evaluated through the ML algorithms, where the present model diagnosed the freshwater or salinity fish in the specific fish species. To achieve the primary goals of the proposed study, several assessments of the experimental data are provided. The results of the investigation indicated that DenseNet121, EfficientNetB0, ResNet50, VGG16, and VGG19 architectures of the CNN with SVC ML technique achieved 100% accuracy, F1-score, precision, and recall for binary classification (freshwater/salinity) of fish images. Additionally, the ResNet50 architecture of the CNN with SVC ML technique achieved 98.06% and 100% accuracy for multiclass classification (freshwater and salinity fish species) of fish images. However, the proposed pipeline can be very effective in sustainable fish management in fish identification and classification.

Cardiovascular diseases remain one of the main threats to human health, significantly affecting the quality and life expectancy. Effective and prompt recognition of these diseases is crucial. This research aims to develop an effective novel hybrid method for automatically detecting dangerous arrhythmias based on cardiac patients’ short electrocardiogram (ECG) fragments. This study suggests using a continuous wavelet transform (CWT) to convert ECG signals into images (scalograms) and examining the task of categorizing short 2-s segments of ECG signals into four groups of dangerous arrhythmias that are shockable, including ventricular flutter (C1), ventricular fibrillation (C2), ventricular tachycardia torsade de pointes (C3), and high-rate ventricular tachycardia (C4). We propose developing a novel hybrid neural network with a deep learning architecture to classify dangerous arrhythmias. This work utilizes actual electrocardiogram (ECG) data obtained from the PhysioNet database, alongside artificially generated ECG data produced by the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) approach, to address the issue of imbalanced class distribution for obtaining an accuracy-trained model. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves high accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, and an F1-score of 97.75%, 97.75%, 99.25%, 97.75%, and 97.75%, respectively, in classifying all the four shockable classes of arrhythmias and are superior to traditional methods. Our work possesses significant clinical value in real-life scenarios since it has the potential to significantly enhance the diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening arrhythmias in individuals with cardiac disease. Furthermore, our model also has demonstrated adaptability and generality for two other datasets.

Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) play a crucial role in safeguarding network infrastructures from cyber threats and ensuring the integrity of highly sensitive data. Conventional IDS technologies, although successful in achieving high levels of accuracy, frequently encounter substantial model bias. This bias is primarily caused by imbalances in the data and the lack of relevance of certain features. This study aims to tackle these challenges by proposing an advanced machine learning (ML) based IDS that minimizes misclassification errors and corrects model bias. As a result, the predictive accuracy and generalizability of the IDS are significantly improved. The proposed system employs advanced feature selection techniques, such as Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE), sequential feature selection (SFS), and statistical feature selection, to refine the input feature set and minimize the impact of non-predictive attributes. In addition, this work incorporates data resampling methods such as Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique and Edited Nearest Neighbor (SMOTE_ENN), Adaptive Synthetic Sampling (ADASYN), and Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique–Tomek Links (SMOTE_Tomek) to address class imbalance and improve the accuracy of the model. The experimental results indicate that our proposed model, especially when utilizing the random forest (RF) algorithm, surpasses existing models regarding accuracy, precision, recall, and F Score across different data resampling methods. Using the ADASYN resampling method, the RF model achieves an accuracy of 99.9985% for botnet attacks and 99.9777% for Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attacks, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach in dealing with imbalanced data distributions. This research not only improves the abilities of IDS to identify botnet and MITM attacks but also provides a scalable and efficient solution that can be used in other areas where data imbalance is a recurring problem. This work has implications beyond IDS, offering valuable insights into using ML techniques in complex real-world scenarios.
