Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive impairment and aberrant protein deposition in the brain. Therefore, the early detection of AD is crucial for the development of effective treatments and interventions, as the disease is more responsive to treatment in its early stages. It is worth mentioning that deep learning techniques have been successfully applied in recent years to a wide range of medical imaging tasks, including the detection of AD. These techniques have the ability to automatically learn and extract features from large datasets, making them well suited for the analysis of complex medical images. In this paper, we propose an improved lightweight deep learning model for the accurate detection of AD from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images. Our proposed model achieves high detection performance without the need for deeper layers and eliminates the use of traditional methods such as feature extraction and classification by combining them all into one stage. Furthermore, our proposed method consists of only seven layers, making the system less complex than other previous deep models and less time-consuming to process. We evaluate our proposed model using a publicly available Kaggle dataset, which contains a large number of records in a small dataset size of only 36 Megabytes. Our model achieved an overall accuracy of 99.22% for binary classification and 95.93% for multi-classification tasks, which outperformed other previous models. Our study is the first to combine all methods used in the publicly available Kaggle dataset for AD detection, enabling researchers to work on a dataset with new challenges. Our findings show the effectiveness of our lightweight deep learning framework to achieve high accuracy in the classification of AD.

The development of smart network infrastructure of the Internet of Things (IoT) faces the immense threat of sophisticated Distributed Denial-of-Services (DDoS) security attacks. The existing network security solutions of enterprise networks are significantly expensive and unscalable for IoT. The integration of recently developed Software Defined Networking (SDN) reduces a significant amount of computational overhead for IoT network devices and enables additional security measurements. At the prelude stage of SDN-enabled IoT network infrastructure, the sampling based security approach currently results in low accuracy and low DDoS attack detection. In this paper, we propose an Adaptive Machine Learning based SDN-enabled Distributed Denial-of-Services attacks Detection and Mitigation (AMLSDM) framework. The proposed AMLSDM framework develops an SDN-enabled security mechanism for IoT devices with the support of an adaptive machine learning classification model to achieve the successful detection and mitigation of DDoS attacks. The proposed framework utilizes machine learning algorithms in an adaptive multilayered feed-forwarding scheme to successfully detect the DDoS attacks by examining the static features of the inspected network traffic. In the proposed adaptive multilayered feed-forwarding framework, the first layer utilizes Support Vector Machine (SVM), Naive Bayes (NB), Random Forest (RF), k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN), and Logistic Regression (LR) classifiers to build a model for detecting DDoS attacks from the training and testing environment-specific datasets. The output of the first layer passes to an Ensemble Voting (EV) algorithm, which accumulates the performance of the first layer classifiers. In the third layer, the adaptive frameworks measures the real-time live network traffic to detect the DDoS attacks in the network traffic. The proposed framework utilizes a remote SDN controller to mitigate the detected DDoS attacks over Open Flow (OF) switches and reconfigures the network resources for legitimate network hosts. The experimental results show the better performance of the proposed framework as compared to existing state-of-the art solutions in terms of higher accuracy of DDoS detection and low false alarm rate.

This study proposes a novel framework to improve intrusion detection system (IDS) performance based on the data collected from the Internet of things (IoT) environments. The developed framework relies on deep learning and metaheuristic (MH) optimization algorithms to perform feature extraction and selection. A simple yet effective convolutional neural network (CNN) is implemented as the core feature extractor of the framework to learn better and more relevant representations of the input data in a lower-dimensional space. A new feature selection mechanism is proposed based on a recently developed MH method, called Reptile Search Algorithm (RSA), which is inspired by the hunting behaviors of the crocodiles. The RSA boosts the IDS system performance by selecting only the most important features (an optimal subset of features) from the extracted features using the CNN model. Several datasets, including KDDCup-99, NSL-KDD, CICIDS-2017, and BoT-IoT, were used to assess the IDS system performance. The proposed framework achieved competitive performance in classification metrics compared to other well-known optimization methods applied for feature selection problems.

Pedestrian detection and tracking are vital elements of today’s surveillance systems, which make daily life safe for humans. Thus, human detection and visualization have become essential inventions in the field of computer vision. Hence, developing a surveillance system with multiple object recognition and tracking, especially in low light and night-time, is still challenging. Therefore, we propose a novel system based on machine learning and image processing to provide an efficient surveillance system for pedestrian detection and tracking at night. In particular, we propose a system that tackles a two-fold problem by detecting multiple pedestrians in infrared (IR) images using machine learning and tracking them using particle filters. Moreover, a random forest classifier is adopted for image segmentation to identify pedestrians in an image. The result of detection is investigated by particle filter to solve pedestrian tracking. Through the extensive experiment, our system shows 93% segmentation accuracy using a random forest algorithm that demonstrates high accuracy for background and roof classes. Moreover, the system achieved a detection accuracy of 90% using multiple template matching techniques and 81% accuracy for pedestrian tracking. Furthermore, our system can identify that the detected object is a human. Hence, our system provided the best results compared to the state-of-art systems, which proves the effectiveness of the techniques used for image segmentation, classification, and tracking. The presented method is applicable for human detection/tracking, crowd analysis, and monitoring pedestrians in IR video surveillance.

Skin cancer is one of the widespread diseases among existing cancer types. More importantly, the detection of lesions in early diagnosis has tremendously attracted researchers’ attention. Thus, artificial intelligence (AI)-based techniques have supported the early diagnosis of skin cancer by investigating deep-learning-based convolutional neural networks (CNN). However, the current methods remain challenging in detecting melanoma in dermoscopic images. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an ensemble model that uses the vision of both EfficientNetV2S and Swin-Transformer models to detect the early focal zone of skin cancer. Hence, we considerthat the former architecture leads to greater accuracy, while the latter model has the advantage of recognizing dark parts in an image. We have modified the fifth block of the EfficientNetV2S model and have included the Swin-Transformer model. Our experiments demonstrate that the constructed ensemble model has attained a higher level of accuracy over the individual models and has also decreased the losses as compared to traditional strategies. The proposed model achieved an accuracy score of 99.10%, a sensitivity of 99.27%, and a specificity score of 99.80%.

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) has revolutionized healthcare with remote patient monitoring and real-time diagnosis, but securing patient data remains a critical challenge due to sophisticated cyber threats and the sensitivity of medical information. Traditional machine learning methods struggle to capture the complex patterns in IoMT data, and conventional intrusion detection systems often fail to identify unknown attacks, leading to high false positive rates and compromised patient data security. To address these issues, we propose RCLNet, an effective Anomaly-based Intrusion Detection System (A-IDS) for IoMT. RCLNet employs a multi-faceted approach, including Random Forest (RF) for feature selection, the integration of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models to enhance pattern recognition, and a Self-Adaptive Attention Layer Mechanism (SAALM) designed specifically for the unique challenges of IoMT. Additionally, RCLNet utilizes focal loss (FL) to manage imbalanced data distributions, a common challenge in IoMT datasets. Evaluation using the WUSTL-EHMS-2020 healthcare dataset demonstrates that RCLNet outperforms recent state-of-the-art methods, achieving a remarkable accuracy of 99.78%, highlighting its potential to significantly improve the security and confidentiality of patient data in IoMT healthcare systems.
