Zinc is generally considered to be one of the most promising materials to be used in biodegradable implants, and many zinc alloys have been optimized to improve implant biocompatibility, degradation, and mechanical properties. However, long-term degradation leads to the prolonged presence of degradation products, which risks foreign body reactions. Herein, we investigated the in vivo biocompatibility and degradation of a biodegradable Zn–Mg–Fe alloy osteosynthesis system in the frontal bone, mandible, and femur in beagles for 1 year. Results of the routine blood, biochemical, trace element, and histological analyses of multiple organs, peripheral blood CD4/CD8a levels, and serum interleukin 2 and 4 levels showed good biocompatibility of the Zn–Mg–Fe alloy. Zinc content analysis revealed zinc accumulation in adjacent bone tissue, but not in the liver, kidney, and spleen, which was related to the degradation of the Zn–Mg–Fe alloy. The alloy demonstrated a uniform slowing degradation rate in vivo. No degradation differences in the frontal bone, mandible, and femur were observed. The degradation products included zinc oxide [ZnO], zinc hydroxide [Zn(OH)2], hydrozincite [Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2], and hopeite [Zn3(PO4)2·4H2O]. The good biocompatibility and degradation properties of the Zn–Mg–Fe alloy render it a very attractive osteosynthesis system for clinical applications.

Background: In recent five years, reports regarding albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR) and the survival of gastric cancer (GC) have emerged rapidly, yet their association remains controversial. This meta-analysis was aimed to provide an insight into the prognostic significance of pretreatment AGR in GC.Methods: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library, Web of Science, WanFang, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and VIP databases were searched for relevant studies, from inception to September 30, 2020. Individual hazard ratios (HRs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were combined by Stata 12.0 software to evaluate the association between pretreatment AGR and overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival/progression-free survival (DFS/PFS).Results: A total of 8,305 patients with GC from 12 studies were included for further analysis. Pooled analyses indicated that low AGR was closely associated with worse OS (HR = 1.531, 95% CI: 1.300–1.803, P < 0.001) and worse DFS/PFS (HR = 2.008, 95% CI: 1.162–3.470, P = 0.012) in GC patients. Moreover, subgroup analyses demonstrated that the association between low AGR and worse OS remained constant despite variations in country, tumor stage, cut-off value, cut-off selection and treatment method. Conclusion: AGR could act as an efficient prognostic indicator for GC, and that low pretreatment AGR predicts poor prognosis in GC.

Microtubule-associated protein 7 (MAP7) plays an important role in cancer cells. In this study, we identified the prognostic significance of MAP7 expression in cytogenetically normal acute myeloid leukemia (CN-AML) patients (aged <60 years) based on several microarray datasets. In the first group (n = 129), high MAP7 expression (MAP7high) was associated with adverse overall survival (OS; P = 0.0441) and event-free survival (EFS; P = 0.0114) compared with low MAP7 expression (MAP7low). In addition, the prognostic significance of MAP7 was confirmed by European Leukemia Net (ELN) intermediate-I genetic categories and multivariable analysis. In the second independent group of CN-AML patients (aged <60 years), MAP7high was also associated with adverse OS (n = 88, OS; P = 0.00811). To understand the inherent mechanisms of MAP7’s prognosis, we investigated genome-wide gene/microRNA expression signatures associated with MAP7 expression. Several known oncogenic genes/microRNAs and anti-oncogenic genes/microRNAs were disordered in MAP7high CN-AML patients. In conclusion, MAP7high is an adverse prognostic biomarker for CN-AML, which may be attributed to the distinctive genome-wide gene/microRNA expression and related cell signaling pathways.
