Functional imaging equipment based on miniaturized atomic magnetometers with array arrangement exhibits promising prospects in biomagnetic scenarios. However, crosstalk from the modulated magnetic field between adjacent sensors degrades the imaging accuracy. To address this issue, this study proposes an all-optical dual-axis zero-field atomic magnetometer using light-shift modulation. We utilize an acousto-optic modulator to modulate a detuned circularly polarized beam for pumping the atomic spin ensembles. This beam allows for the optical modulation of spin polarization and meanwhile generates a light-shift modulation, effectively replacing the conventional magnetic field modulation. By using a probe beam to detect the optical rotation angle perpendicular to the direction of the pump beam, we construct an all-optical configuration of a longitudinally modulated atomic magnetometer, enabling dual-axis magnetic field measurements. Experimental results demonstrate dual-axis sensitivities of 29 and 15fT/Hz1/2, respectively. This method eliminates the need for conventional coil-based magnetic field modulation, thereby paving the way for potential applications in magnetocardiography and magnetoencephalography.

The origin of terahertz (THz) generation in a gas-phase medium is still in controversy, although the THz sources have been applied across many disciplines. Herein, the THz generation in a dual-color field is investigated experimentally by precisely controlling the relative phase and polarization of dual-color lasers, where the accompanying third-harmonic generation is employed for in situ determination of the relative phase up to sub-wavelength accuracy. Joint studies with the strong approximation (SFA) theory reveal that the continuum-continuum (CC) transition within an escaped electron wave packet in the single atom gives birth to THz emission, without the necessity of considering the plasma effect. Meanwhile, we develop the analytic form from SFA-based CC description, which is able to reproduce and decompose the classical photocurrent model from the viewpoint of microscopic quantum theory, establishing the quantum-classical correspondence and bringing a novel insight into the mechanism of THz generation. Present studies leave open the possibility for probing the ultrafast dynamics of continuum electrons and a new dimension for the study of THz-related science and methodology.

Triaxial magnetic field compensation is crucial for a zero-field optically pumped magnetometer (OPM) in pursuit of a zero-field environment. In this work, we demonstrate a triaxial magnetic field compensation method for zero-field OPM based on single-beam configuration. It consists of two procedures: (1) pre-compensation to preliminarily cancel out ambient residual magnetic field by low-frequency magnetic field modulation; and (2) precise compensation to further compensate the residual magnetic field by high-frequency magnetic field modulation. This scheme enables rapid and precise compensation of a large-scale magnetic field and supports real null-point acquisition of the triaxial residual magnetic fields with simple processes. The experimental results show that the compensation resolution on the sensitive axis is better than 1 pT and significantly less than the fluctuation of experimental environments. Our work targets on the quick generation of a zero-field environment for high precision OPM, which is especially advantageous for emerging applications including magnetocardiography (MCG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG).

In this study, we propose an approach for the simultaneous measurement of triaxial magnetic fields using a single-beam zero-field optically pumped atomic magnetometer, in which a rotational high-frequency (ω1) and another high-frequency (ω2) modulated magnetic field magnetic fields are applied along the transverse directions and the longitudinal direction, respectively. Theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and experiments are conducted to demonstrate this method. Experimental sensitivities of 18 fT/Hz1/2 along the two transverse directions and 140 fT/Hz1/2 along the longitudinal direction are simultaneously achieved. On this basis, we operate the magnetometer in closed-loop mode to expand the bandwidth and dynamic range, and to keep the triaxial magnetic field sensed by the magnetometer at zero. The triaxial bandwidths are increased from below 100 Hz to over 1.6 kHz. The triaxial dynamic ranges are all extended to ±150 nT. Plus, we verify the ±1,000 nT dynamic range of the triaxial magnetometer through increasing the triaxial coil constants. The synchronization of triaxial closed-loop measurement, simplicity of magnetometer structure, and closed-loop detection with high sensitivities make it applicable and attractive for biomagnetism imaging in challenging environments.

This paper reports the synthesis and characteristics of a series of alkyl-substituted planar polymers. The physical properties are carefully tuned to optimize their photovoltaic performance. Depending on the length of soluble alkyl side chains which modify the structural order and orientation substantially in polymer backbones, the device performance can be improved significantly. The tuning of HOMO energy levels optimized polymers’ spectral coverage of absorption and their hole mobility, as well as miscibility with fullerene; all these efforts enhanced polymer solar cell performances. The short-circuit current, J sc for polymer solar cells was increased by adjusting polymer chain packing ability. It was found that films with well distributed polymer/fullerene interpenetrating network exhibit improved solar cell conversion efficiency. Enhanced efficiency up to 5.8% has been demonstrated. The results provide important insights about the roles of flexile chains in structure-property relationship for the design of new polymers to be used in high efficient solar cells.

Terahertz (THz) wave generation (TWG) in a dual-color laser is investigated with joint measurements between THz and third-harmonic generation, where the relative phase delay of dual-color fields is determined in situ in sub-wavelength accuracy, allowing for the clarification of the TWG mechanism in a direct comparison with various theoretical predictions. The delay- and polarization-dependent experiment validates that the continuum–continuum transition within the escaped electron wavepacket in the single atom gives birth to THz emission, while the bound energetic level does not contribute to TWG. TWG from atoms and molecules would provide an all-optical, vacuum-free, and ultrafast tool to record the spatiotemporal evolution of tunneling electron wavepackets.
