This paper addresses the frequency oscillation problem in a parallel-inverter-based grid-connected system. Angular frequency interactions between inverters and the grid exhibit various numbers of complicated characteristics that seriously threaten the connected power system's stable operation. This paper proposes a unified frequency oscillation method analysis to investigate the oscillation problem in a multi-VSG grid-connected system. In this method, the power control model of each grid-connected inverter is equivalent to a two-terminal network by analogy method, which can be described as a “current source” connected in parallel with a reciprocal of “admittance” and then joined in series with a joint of “admittance.” Next, considering the influence of grid impedance, the model of the whole grid-connected system is established to reveal the mechanism of multi-VSG angular frequency oscillation. Subsequently, the influence factors of frequency oscillation and its variation law are analyzed through transfer functions, which provide an essential theoretical method for solving the frequency oscillation problem in the current multi-inverter grid-connected engineering application. Finally, we validate the effectiveness and correctness of the small-signal model and the frequency oscillation characteristics by building the MATLAB/Simulink simulation.

A large-scale power system breakdown in the United Kingdom caused blackouts in several important cities, losing about 3.2 percent of the load and affecting nearly 1 million power users on 9 August 2019. On the basis of the accident investigation report provided by the UK National Grid, the specific reasons for the sub-synchronous oscillation of Hornsea wind farm were analyzed. The Hornsea wind power system model was established by MATLAB simulation software to reproduce the accident. To solve this problem, based on the positive and negative sequence decomposition, the control strategy of grid-side converter of doubly-fed induction generator is improved to control the positive sequence voltage of the generator terminal, which can quickly recover the voltage by compensating the reactive power at the grid side. Consequently, the influence of the fault is weakened on the Hornsea wind farm system, and the sub-synchronous oscillation of the system is suppressed. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy in suppressing the sub-synchronous oscillation of weak AC wind power system after being applied to doubly-fed induction generator, which serves as a reference for studying similar problems of offshore wind power.

The existing small-signal analysis models do not adequately describe the impact of the types of disturbance on the torque-frequency dynamics of the multi-VSC parallel system. In this paper, based on the principle of electromechanical analogy, a unified equivalent admittance modeling method is proposed by analogizing the rotor dynamic model of a synchronous generator (SG) to the circuit network, which has the advantages of simple modeling, clear physical meaning and easy expansion. Firstly, the equivalent admittance model of a single SG/VSC is established, and then easily extended to the multi-VSC system. The proposed modelling method not only applicable to a variety of VSCs, but also can handle different types of disturbance. More importantly, the circuit theory can be applied to analyze the torque-frequency dynamic characteristics. Subsequently, the equivalence between the proposed model and the state-space model under different damping terms is compared. In addition, the response characteristics of two different damping terms are compared. Next, the dynamic response characteristics of single VSC and multi-VSC parallel systems under different disturbances are analyzed. Finally, related simulations and experiments are executed to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method.

With the rapid development of active distribution networks, the “petal”‐type distribution network has become the mainstream power supply structure. Power control methods for active distribution networks should be further studied to ensure the safe and reliable power supply of a distribution system. An electromagnetic rotary power flow controller (RPFC) is a feasible solution for controlling power in active distribution networks. However, when testing the effectiveness of the PQ decoupled control method for RPFC based on instantaneous reactive power theory, difficulties were encountered with the synchronous control of the rotor position angle of two rotating‐phase transformers, and the accuracy of power control was unsatisfactory. Given this condition, PQ control is improved in three ways. First, the system's periodic oscillation problem is solved via variable speed control. Second, the servo motor‐rotary phase‐shifting transformer synchronous rotation scheme, which reduces power control error and improves stability, is designed. Third, the overshoot phenomenon in power control is improved using the variable‐domain fuzzy proportional‐integral adaptive method. Experimental results show that the proposed advanced control scheme exhibits good dynamic and static performance in power control scenarios and achieves effective improvement in RPFC.

Virtual synchronous generators (VSGs) deployed into an islanded microgrid emulates the Q-V droop nature of a synchronous generator. Although the Q-V droop control of VSGs enhances the voltage stability, the installed distant VSGs have unequal line impedances due to their random location and rated capacity. The unequal line impedance hinders the proportional reactive power-sharing between VSGs. The proposed study is focused on minimizing the reactive power sharing error by introducing a virtual parallel inductor (VPI) concept. A mathematical model is proposed to create and exploit the analogous relation between the exponential behavior of the VPI and the controllable voltage source to mitigate the reactive power sharing error and simultaneously strengthen the voltage control accuracy. In addition, a droop within a droop strategy is introduced to enhance the reactive power sharing capability of the VSGs. Furthermore, a detailed eigenvalue analysis is conducted to evaluate the limitations of the proposed model. Finally, to test the superiority of the proposed model over the state-of-the-art methods, simulation and hardware experimental results are presented.

For the problem in which accessing a high proportion of renewable energy results in exceeding the limit in distribution network voltage, the existing regulating method experiences difficulty in considering the two-way voltage regulation and loss reduction optimization function. This study proposes a series-type dual rotary phase-shifting transformer (DRPST) based on the principle of phase volume synthesis. This transformer exhibits bidirectional voltage regulation, high reliability, and low cost. First, the topology, operating principle, and equivalent circuit of DRPST are introduced, and its simplified circuit model is established. On the basis of this model, the causes of voltage exceeding the limits are analyzed and the active distribution network model that contains DRPST is constructed. A real-time rolling two-layer optimization strategy based on DRPST is proposed. The inner layer model is solved using the multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm with the objective of minimizing voltage deviation and line loss. The optimal compromise solution of the Pareto solution set of the inner layer model is determined using the fuzzy subordinate degree function method. The outer model is based on the optimal compromise solution of the inner model, and the DRPST output rotor angle is controlled without deviation through double closed-loop proportional–integral regulation. Finally, the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed topology and control method are verified via simulation and experimental analysis.
