For a high penetration level of distributed energy resources (DERs) in the grid, virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control is applied to the power electronic converters to mimic the rotating mass and damping property of a conventional synchronous generator (SG), which can support virtual inertia and damping for the power system. For VSG control, a phase locked loop (PLL) is needed to estimate the angular frequency of the point of common coupling (PCC); however, the deviation of PLL will affect the accuracy of the active power reference, and even the VSG stability control. From this perspective, an enhanced active power controller without PLL was proposed for VSG control. Furthermore, an accurate small-signal model of the multiple parallel VSGs system that considers the dynamic characteristics and the changing of a steady state operation point was derived for system analysis and parameter design. Based on this model, the influence rules of the eigenvalues by droop and virtual inertia were acquired. The simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the validity of the proposed active power controller and parameter design rules.
This study introduces a three-phase virtual synchronous motor (VSM) control and its possible application for providing fast-charging service from off-board chargers of electric vehicles (EVs). The main circuit of the off-board charger consists of a three-phase voltage source PWM rectifier (VSR) and a resonant LLC zero-voltage-switching converter. In the proposed control approach, VSM-controlled pre-stage VSR emulates the external characteristics of a synchronous motor (SM), simultaneously, droop control based on charging mode in the VSM can satisfy the demand of the EVs constant-current fast-charging; The post-stage DC–DC converter is responsible for stabilizing the DC bus voltage. The feature of this control strategy is that VSM and fast charging control are implemented by the pre-stage converter, which has better coordination. In the MATLAB, the equivalent synchronous grid of the distribution network supplies to the power battery through the off-board charger, and the effectiveness of the presented control is demonstrated by typical working conditions.
The existing small-signal analysis models do not adequately describe the impact of the types of disturbance on the torque-frequency dynamics of the multi-VSC parallel system. In this paper, based on the principle of electromechanical analogy, a unified equivalent admittance modeling method is proposed by analogizing the rotor dynamic model of a synchronous generator (SG) to the circuit network, which has the advantages of simple modeling, clear physical meaning and easy expansion. Firstly, the equivalent admittance model of a single SG/VSC is established, and then easily extended to the multi-VSC system. The proposed modelling method not only applicable to a variety of VSCs, but also can handle different types of disturbance. More importantly, the circuit theory can be applied to analyze the torque-frequency dynamic characteristics. Subsequently, the equivalence between the proposed model and the state-space model under different damping terms is compared. In addition, the response characteristics of two different damping terms are compared. Next, the dynamic response characteristics of single VSC and multi-VSC parallel systems under different disturbances are analyzed. Finally, related simulations and experiments are executed to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method.
The increasing penetration rate of grid connected renewable energy power generation reduces the primary frequency regulation capability of the system and poses a challenge to the security and stability of the power grid. In this paper, a distributed photovoltaic (PV) storage virtual synchronous generator system is constructed, which realizes the external characteristics of synchronous generator/motor. For this kind of input/output bidirectional devices (e.g., renewable power generation/storage combined systems, pumped storage power stations, battery energy storage systems, and vehicle-to-grid electric vehicles), a synthesis analysis method for system power-frequency considering source-load static frequency characteristics (S-L analysis method) is proposed in order to depict the system’s power balance dynamic adjustment process visually. Simultaneously, an inertia matching method is proposed to solve the problem of inertia matching in the power grid. Through the simulation experiment in MATLAB, the feasibility of the distributed PV storage synchronous virtual machine system is verified as well as the effectiveness of S-L analysis method and inertia matching method.
