Optical fibers have been involved in the area of sensing applications for more than four decades. Moreover, interferometric optical fiber sensors have attracted broad interest for their prospective applications in sensing temperature, refractive index, strain measurement, pressure, acoustic wave, vibration, magnetic field, and voltage. During this time, numerous types of interferometers have been developed such as Fabry-Perot, Michelson, Mach-Zehnder, Sagnac Fiber, and Common-path interferometers. Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) fiber-optic sensors have been extensively investigated for their exceedingly effective, simple fabrication as well as low cost aspects. In this study, a wide variety of FPI sensors are reviewed in terms of fabrication methods, principle of operation and their sensing applications. The chronology of the development of FPI sensors and their implementation in various applications are discussed.
A microfibre device integrating a microfibre knot resonator in a Sagnac loop reflector is proposed for refractive index and temperature sensing. The reflective configuration of this optical structure offers the advantages of simple fabrication and ease of sensing. To achieve a balance between responsiveness and robustness, the entire microfibre structure is embedded in low index Teflon, except for the 0.5–2 mm diameter microfibre knot resonator sensing region. The proposed sensor has exhibited a linear spectral response with temperature and refractive index. A small change in free spectral range is observed when the microfibre device experiences a large refractive index change in the surrounding medium. The change is found to be in agreement with calculated results based on dispersion relationships.

In this article, we present a vibration measurement system based on low-frequency cantilever-based fiber Bragg grating accelerometers (CFAs) for a suspension bridge. Each accelerometer has an end-loaded cantilever beam, specifically tailored to achieve a uniform sensitivity for a frequency range of 0-4 Hz, a suitable detection range for the vibration analysis. In the field test, seven CFAs were installed at specific positions along the deck of a 110-m-long suspension bridge for synchronous multipoint vibration measurements. The reflection spectra of the CFA array were recorded and processed using the pseudo-high-resolution scheme to improve the signal quality and measurement accuracy. Three natural vibration frequencies: 1.15, 1.54, and 3.17 Hz have been identified from the measurement. Following that, the acquired time-domain signals were processed by a digital bandpass filter to retrieve the waveform at each natural frequency to determine the corresponding mode shapes. The results are in agreement with the phase difference between the frequency domain signal for each natural frequency. This investigation has shown the feasibility of the proposed measurement system for determining the mode shapes and dynamic frequency analysis of a suspension bridge. It is a potential method for structural health monitoring for other similar civil structures.
Corrosion of steel bar is one of key factors undermining reinforced concrete (RC) structures in a harsh environment. This paper attempts to review the non-destructive procedures from the aspect of the corrosion measurement techniques, especially their advantages and limitations. Systematical classification of diagnostic methods is carried out to determine any probable corrosion issues before the structures become severe, and helps choose the suitable method according to different construction features. Furthermore, the three electrochemical factors method is introduced to inspire researchers to combine various techniques to improve corrosion evaluation accuracy. The recommendations for future work are summarized, in conclusion.
A compact and simple double F-P interference optical fiber optic gas pressure sensor based on suspended core structure is proposed and demonstrated. The sensor is formed by splicing a Section of thin-walled grapefruit photonic crystal fiber (G-PCF) with single-mode fiber (SMF). By adjusting the special fusion parameters, a short air-cavity region is formed in the G-PCF next to the splicing point with the SMF segment, and the other end of the G-PCF segment is open to the atmosphere. The output interference spectrum of the sensor comprises of two spectral parameters that have different sensitivities to temperature and gas pressure. One of them is the wideband envelope that is associated with the air-cavity and it is only sensitive to the gas pressure but insensitive to the change of ambient temperature. This property is particularly useful for addressing the complex temperature-pressure cross sensitivity of both spectral parameters. The research findings indicate that the sensor can perform an accurate measurement for gas pressure in dynamic range of 0-1.0 MPa under the high temperature condition up to 500 °C.
