Plant diseases of an infectious nature are the reason for major economic losses in agriculture throughout the world. The early, rapid and non-invasive detection of diseases and pathogens is critical for effective control. Optical diagnostic methods have a high speed of analysis and non-invasiveness. The review provides a general description of such methods and also discusses in more detail methods based on the scattering and absorption of light in the UV, Vis, IR and terahertz ranges, Raman scattering and LiDAR technologies. The application of optical methods to all parts of plants, to a large number of groups of pathogens, under various data collection conditions is considered. The review reveals the diversity and achievements of modern optical methods in detecting infectious plant diseases, their development trends and their future potential.
Using a coloring method, the pattern of the transport of a compact spot of markers in a composite vortex created by a uniformly rotating disk, which is located on the bottom of a cylindrical tank, is investigated. The markers were formed by droplets of an aqueous solution of uranyl or ink, which fell down on the free surface of the fluid. In a quiescent fluid, the spot of the markers was transformed into a slowly sinking cascade of vortices. The markers introduced at the center of the cavity on the composite-vortex surface formed a spiral branch. For a non-central introduction of the markers, two spiral branches were formed, one growing in the direction of the fluid rotation and the other growing in the direction, opposite to the rotation. The markers penetrate into the interior of the composite vortex along isolated cylindrical surfaces. The geometrical parameters of the flow are presented.
The detection and identification of plant diseases is a fundamental task for sustainable crop production. Septoria tritici and Stagonospora nodorum blotch (STB and SNB) are two of the most common diseases of cereal crops that cause significant economic damage. Both pathogens are difficult to identify at early stages of infection. Determining the degree of the disease at a late infection stage is useful for assessing cereal crops before harvesting, as it allows the assessment of potential yield losses. Hyperspectral sensing could allow for automatic recognition of Septoria harmfulness on wheat in field conditions. In this research, we aimed to collect information on the hyperspectral data on wheat plants with different lesion degrees of STB&SNB and to create and train a neural network for the detection of lesions on leaves and ears caused by STB&SNB infection at the late stage of disease development. Spring wheat was artificially infected twice with Septoria pathogens in the stem elongation stage and in the heading stage. Hyperspectral reflections and brightness measurements were collected in the field on wheat leaves and ears on the 37th day after STB and the 30th day after SNB pathogen inoculation using an Ocean Insight “Flame” VIS-NIR hyperspectrometer. Obtained non-imaging data were pre-treated, and the perceptron model neural network (PNN) was created and trained based on a pairwise comparison of datasets for healthy and diseased plants. Both statistical and neural network approaches showed the high quality of the differentiation between healthy and damaged wheat plants by the hyperspectral signature. A comparison of the results of visual recognition and automatic STB&SNB estimation showed that the neural network was equally effective in the quality of the disease definition. The PNN, based on a neuron model of hyperspectral signature with a spectral step of 6 nm and 2000–4000 value datasets, showed a high quality of detection of the STB&SNB severity. There were 0.99 accuracy, 0.94 precision, 0.89 recall and 0.91 F-score metrics of the PNN model after 10,000 learning epochs. The estimation accuracy of diseased/healthy leaves ranged from 88.1 to 97.7% for different datasets. The accuracy of detection of a light and medium degree of disease was lower (38–66%). This method of non-imaging hyperspectral signature classification could be useful for the identification of the STB and SNB lesion degree identification in field conditions for pre-harvesting crop estimation.
The oil redistribution pattern in a compound vortex created by a uniformly rotating disk located on the bottom of a cylindrical tank is investigated. At the initial instant, a round spot of a lightweight oil is deposited on the free surface of the liquid at the center of the tank. In the course of the formation of the compound vortex, the oil is partially entrained into the interior of the liquid and forms a body of revolution. On the free surface, the spot loses the round shape, spiral branches stretch out from the appeared protrusions and cusps. The orientation of these branches is opposite to the direction of fluid rotation in the tank. Geometrical parameters of the structures for different flow regimes are studied.
A method for stimulating the growth of spruce and strawberry in the early phases of development is proposed. A technology for obtaining plasma-activated water (PAW) with the help of a glow discharge plasma generator was developed. The method is proposed for increasing the shelf life of PAW by adding an aqueous colloid of polyvinylpyrralidone (PVP) polymer. It is shown that after treatment with a PAW + PVP mixture, the seeds have a higher percentage of germination, the plants develop faster in the early stages, and they are more viable. At the physicochemical level, after seed treatment with PAW + PVP, higher rates of metabolite outflow from seeds are observed. At the biological level, seed treatment with PAW + PVP leads to a slight decrease in the activity of antioxidant enzymes and a higher content of chlorophylls in the leaves, and a slightly higher assimilation rate is observed. In the leaves, there is higher content of the growth hormone indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), whereas the content of the growth-inhibiting hormone abscisic acid decreases. The use of a stimulating drug based on the composition of an aqueous solution activated by plasma and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PAW + PVP) polymer can be an effective means of a single pre-sowing treatment of spruce seeds in solving the problem of reforestation and strawberry during plant propagation.
Optical methods (spectroscopy, spectrofluorometry, dynamic light scattering, and refractometry) were used to study the change in the state of hen egg-white lysozyme (HEWL), protein molecules, and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in aqueous colloids with changes in pH, and the interaction of protein molecules with nanoparticles was also studied. It was shown that changing pH may be the easiest way to control the protein corona on gold nanoparticles. In a colloid of nanoparticles, both in the presence and absence of protein, aggregation–deaggregation, and in a protein colloid, monomerization–dimerization–aggregation are the main processes when pH is changed. A specific point at pH 7.5, where a transition of the colloidal system from one state to another is observed, has been found using all the optical methods mentioned. It has been shown that gold nanoparticles can stabilize HEWL protein molecules at alkaline pH while maintaining enzymatic activity, which can be used in practice. The data obtained in this manuscript allow for the state of HEWL colloids and gold nanoparticles to be monitored using one or two simple and accessible optical methods.
