Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma in advanced oxidation technology can degrade organic pollutants in water under mild conditions. It has the advantages of universality, simple reaction conditions, and no secondary pollution. However, the light, electrons, and low-reactive substances generated during the discharge process cannot be fully utilized, which limits the further application of DBD plasma. Therefore, the DBD system coupled with catalysis can not only solve the above problem, but also transforms the low-active substances into high-active substances and improves the degradation rate of organic pollutants. Based on this fact, this review focuses on the characteristics and principles of DBD plasma coupled with photocatalysis, adsorption, Fenton oxidation, persulfate oxidation and composite technology to treat organic wastewater. This review puts forward some problems of DBD synergetic catalysis technology, and looks forward to the future development direction of this technology to treat organic pollutants in water.
To improve aquatic environmental quality and maintain channel stability against soil erosion, ecological bank slope revetments for surface water bodies were developed using a combination of prefabricated porous concrete spheres and vegetation methods, and a model set-up consisting of two equal-sized ditches with different types of bank slope revetments was constructed to evaluate the purification effects of ecological and hard revetments on water quality. The slope of one ditch was embanked with ecological revetments as an experimental treatment, while the other was embanked with hard revetments as a control. Pollutant removal from the ecological bank revetment ditch was significantly better in terms of the overall removal efficiencies of the chemical oxygen demand of manganese (CODMn), ammonia, total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP), with two- to four-fold greater removal compared with that from hard slope revetments under the same operational conditions. Nutrient pollutants, including ammonia, TN, and TP had higher removal efficiencies than that for CODMn in both experimental ditches. The dependence of the first-order rate constant (k20) and temperature coefficient () obtained from the Arrhenius equation indicated that the removal efficiencies for ammonia, TN, and TP were higher with greater rate constants (k20) in the experimental ditch. In the ecological revetment ditch, the k20 values for CODMn, ammonia, TN, and TP were 0.054, 0.378, 0.222, and 0.266 respectively, around three-fold the values observed in the hard revetment ditch, but there was no obvious difference in values between the two ditches. The k20 values of TN and TP in both ditches showed significant positive correlations with seasonal shifts, as the removal of nutrient pollutants is highly sensitive to water temperatures.
Eutrophication has become one of the most serious problems threatening the lakes/reservoirs in China over 50 years. Evaluation of eutrophication is a multi-criteria decision-making process with uncertainties. In this study, a cloud matter element (CME) model was developed in order to evaluate eutrophication level objectively and scientifically, which incorporated the randomness and fuzziness of eutrophication evaluation process. The elements belonging to each eutrophication level in the CME model were determined by means of certainty degrees through repeated simulations of cloud model with reasonable parameters of expectation Ex, entropy En, and hyper-entropy He. The weights of evaluation indicators were decided by a combination of entropy technology and analytic hierarchy process method. The neartudes of water samples to each eutrophication level of lakes/reservoirs in the CME model were generated and the eutrophication levels were determined by maximum neartude principal. The proposed CME model was applied to evaluate eutrophication levels of 24 typical lakes/reservoirs in China. The results of the CME model were compared with those of comprehensive index method, matter element model, fuzzy matter element model, and cloud model. Most of the results obtained by the CME model were consistent with the results obtained by other methods, which proved the CME model is an effective tool to evaluate eutrophication.
The aim of this study is to determine the impact upon dissolved organic matter (DOM) and removal of disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors of adding an ozone-biological activated carbon (O3-BAC) process after the conventional treatment process (CTP) using water from the Huangpu River in Shanghai, east China. Several metrics, including size fractionation, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP), were employed to accomplish this goal. In the raw water collected from the Huangpu River, the low molecular weight (MW) molecules (MW 10 kDa) by 61% and the low MW molecules (MW <3 kDa) by only 8%. The O3-BAC presented an accumulated DOC removal efficiency of approximately 50%, in particular, showing a high degree of the removal effectiveness of low MW molecules. Samplings from the CTP, ozone and BAC were subjected to excessive chlorination to determine the THMFP, and the measured concentrations were 211.89 ± 4.58 µg/L, 169.52 ± 4.55 µg/L, and 124.42 ± 4.27 µg/L, respectively. Therefore, coupled with the THMFP removal rate of 74%, the addition of the O3-BAC process after an existing CTP improved the water quality of the effluent, particularly, in terms of the improved reduction in the precursors of DBPs.
In this paper, an improved fuzzy matter-element (IFME) method was proposed, which integrates the classical matter-element (ME) method, set pair analysis (SPA), and variable coefficient method (VCM). The method was applied to evaluate water quality of five monitor stations along Caoqiao River in Yixing city, Jiangsu Province, China. The levels of river water quality were determined according to fuzzy closeness degree. Compared with the traditional evaluation methods, the IFME method has several characteristics as follows: (i) weights were determined by the VCM method, which can reduce workload and overcome the adverse effects of abnormal values, (ii) membership degrees were defined by SPA, which can utilize monitored data more scientifically and comprehensively, and (iii) IFME is more suitable for seriously polluted rivers. Overall, these findings reinforce the notion that an integrated approach is essential for attaining scientific and objective assessment of river water quality.
