The successful launch of the Landsat 8 satellite with two thermal infrared bands on February 11, 2013, for continuous Earth observation provided another opportunity for remote sensing of land surface temperature (LST). However, calibration notices issued by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicated that data from the Landsat 8 Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) Band 11 have large uncertainty and suggested using TIRS Band 10 data as a single spectral band for LST estimation. In this study, we presented an improved mono-window (IMW) algorithm for LST retrieval from the Landsat 8 TIRS Band 10 data. Three essential parameters (ground emissivity, atmospheric transmittance and effective mean atmospheric temperature) were required for the IMW algorithm to retrieve LST. A new method was proposed to estimate the parameter of effective mean atmospheric temperature from local meteorological data. The other two essential parameters could be both estimated through the so-called land cover approach. Sensitivity analysis conducted for the IMW algorithm revealed that the possible error in estimating the required atmospheric water vapor content has the most significant impact on the probable LST estimation error. Under moderate errors in both water vapor content and ground emissivity, the algorithm had an accuracy of ~1.4 K for LST retrieval. Validation of the IMW algorithm using the simulated datasets for various situations indicated that the LST difference between the retrieved and the simulated ones was 0.67 K on average, with an RMSE of 0.43 K. Comparison of our IMW algorithm with the single-channel (SC) algorithm for three main atmosphere profiles indicated that the average error and RMSE of the IMW algorithm were −0.05 K and 0.84 K, respectively, which were less than the −2.86 K and 1.05 K of the SC algorithm. Application of the IMW algorithm to Nanjing and its vicinity in east China resulted in a reasonable LST estimation for the region. Spatial variation of the extremely hot weather, a frequently-occurring phenomenon of an abnormal heat flux process in summer along the Yangtze River Basin, had been thoroughly analyzed. This successful application suggested that the IMW algorithm presented in the study could be used as an efficient method for LST retrieval from the Landsat 8 TIRS Band 10 data.

Land surface temperature (LST) images retrieved from the thermal infrared (TIR) band data of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) have much lower spatial resolution than the MODIS visible and near-infrared (VNIR) band data. The coarse pixel scale of MODIS LST images (1000 m under nadir) have limited their capability in applying to many studies required high spatial resolution in comparison of the MODIS VNIR band data with pixel scale of 250–500 m. In this paper we intend to develop an efficient approach for pixel decomposition to increase the spatial resolution of MODIS LST image using the VNIR band data as assistance. The unique feature of this approach is to maintain the thermal radiance of parent pixels in the MODIS LST image unchanged after they are decomposed into the sub-pixels in the resulted image. There are two important steps in the decomposition: initial temperature estimation and final temperature determination. Therefore the approach can be termed double-step pixel decomposition (DSPD). Both steps involve a series of procedures to achieve the final result of decomposed LST image, including classification of the surface patterns, establishment of LST change with normalized difference of vegetation index (NDVI) and building index (NDBI), reversion of LST into thermal radiance through Planck equation, and computation of weights for the sub-pixels of the resulted image. Since the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) with much higher spatial resolution than MODIS data was on-board the same platform (Terra) as MODIS for Earth observation, an experiment had been done in the study to validate the accuracy and efficiency of our approach for pixel decomposition. The ASTER LST image was used as the reference to compare with the decomposed LST image. The result showed that the spatial distribution of the decomposed LST image was very similar to that of the ASTER LST image with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 2.7 K for entire image. Comparison with the evaluation DisTrad (E-DisTrad) and re-sampling methods for pixel decomposition also indicate that our DSPD has the lowest RMSE in all cases, including urban region, water bodies, and natural terrain. The obvious increase in spatial resolution remarkably uplifts the capability of the coarse MODIS LST images in highlighting the details of LST variation. Therefore it can be concluded that, in spite of complicated procedures, the proposed DSPD approach provides an alternative to improve the spatial resolution of MODIS LST image hence expand its applicability to the real world.

In order to reduce the fatal damage of tire blowout during vehicle operation, a differential flatness based model predictive controller is proposed. A 3 degrees of freedom (DOF) vehicle dynamics model with tire blowout is established, and then the flat outputs are given. The flatness property of the vehicle dynamics is discussed accordingly, and the MPC for the vehicle with a tire blowout stability control is formulated, where the lateral acceleration is considered as safety constraint. Simulations of vehicle with a tire blowout driving on the different road are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Image fusion of satellite sensors can generate a high-resolution multi-spectral image from inputs of a high spatial resolution panchromatic image and a low spatial resolution multi-spectral image for feature extraction and target recognition, such as enclosure seines and floating rafts. However, there is currently no clear and definite method of image fusion for different aquaculture areas distribution extraction from high-resolution satellite images. This study uses three types of high-resolution remote sensing images, GF-1 (Gaofen-1), GF-2 (Gaofen-2), and WV-2 (WorldView-2), covering the raft and enclosure seines aquacultures in the Xiangshan Bay, China, to evaluate panchromatic and multispectral image fusion techniques to determine which is the best. This study applied PCA (principal component analysis), GS (Gram-Schmidt), and NNDiffuse (nearest neighbor diffusion) algorithms to panchromatic and multispectral images fusion of GF-1, GF-2, and WV-2. Two quantitative methods are used to evaluate the fusion effect. The first used seven statistical parameters, including gray mean value, standard deviation, information entropy, average gradient, correlation coefficient, deviation index, and spectral distortion. The second is the CQmax index. Comparing the evaluation results by these seven common statistical indicators with the results of the image fusion evaluation by index CQmax, the results prove that the CQmax index can be applied to the evaluation of image fusion effects in different aquaculture areas. For the floating raft cultured area, the conclusion is consentaneous; NNDiffuse was also optimal for GF-1 and GF-2 data, and PCA was optimal for WV-2 data. For the enclosure seines culture area, the conclusion of quantitative evaluations is not consistent and it shows that there is no definite good method that can be applied to all areas; therefore, careful evaluation and selection of the best applicable image fusion method are required according to the study area and sensor images.

Extracting accurate surface reflectance from multispectral UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) imagery is a fundamental task in remote sensing. However, most studies have focused on short-endurance UAVs, with limited attention given to long-endurance UAVs due to the challenges posed by dynamically changing incident radiative energy. This study addresses this gap by employing a solar trajectory model (STM) to accurately estimate incident radiative energy, thereby improving reflectance calculation precision. The STM method addresses the following key issues: The experimental results demonstrated that the root mean square error (RMSE) of the STM method in Shanghai was 15.80% compared to the standard reflectance, which is 51% lower than the downwelling light sensor (DLS) method and 37% lower than the traditional method. This indicates that the STM method provides results that are more accurate, aligning closely with standard values. In Tianjin, the RMSE was 24% lower than the DLS method and 65% lower than the traditional method. The STM effectively mitigates inconsistencies in incident radiative energy across different image strips captured by long-endurance UAVs, ensuring uniform reflectance accuracy in digital orthophoto maps (DOMs). The proportion of corrected reflectance errors within the ideal range (±10%) increased by 24% compared to the histogram matching method. Furthermore, the optimal flight duration for long-endurance UAVs launched at noon was extended from 50 min to 150 min. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that applying the STM to correct multispectral imagery obtained from long-endurance UAVs significantly enhances reflectance calculation accuracy for DOMs, offering a practical solution for improving reflectance imagery quality under clear-sky conditions.

The downwelling light sensor (DLS) is the industry-standard solution for generating UAV-based digital orthophoto maps (DOMs). Current mainstream DLS correction methods primarily rely on angle compensation. However, due to the temporal mismatch between the DLS sampling intervals and the exposure times of multispectral cameras, as well as external disturbances such as strong wind gusts and abrupt changes in flight attitude, DLS data often become unreliable, particularly at UAV turning points. Building upon traditional angle compensation methods, this study proposes an improved correction approach—FIM-DC (Fitting and Interpolation Model-based Data Correction)—specifically designed for data collection under clear-sky conditions and stable atmospheric illumination, with the goal of significantly enhancing the accuracy of reflectance retrieval. The method addresses three key issues: (1) field tests conducted in the Qingpu region show that FIM-DC markedly reduces the standard deviation of reflectance at tie points across multiple spectral bands and flight sessions, with the most substantial reduction from 15.07% to 0.58%; (2) it effectively mitigates inconsistencies in reflectance within image mosaics caused by anomalous DLS readings, thereby improving the uniformity of DOMs; and (3) FIM-DC accurately corrects the spectral curves of six land cover types in anomalous images, making them consistent with those from non-anomalous images. In summary, this study demonstrates that integrating FIM-DC into DLS data correction workflows for UAV-based multispectral imagery significantly enhances reflectance calculation accuracy and provides a robust solution for improving image quality under stable illumination conditions.
