The insufficient optimization of calcination process parameters severely restricts the enhancement of rice husk ash (RHA) volcanic ash activity. In this study, an intelligent muffle furnace was used for multi-parameter coupled regulation, combined with microscopic characterization techniques, to elucidate the effects of temperature, cooling mode, heating rate, and holding time on the reactivity of RHA. The results showed that the effect of calcination temperature on the volcanic ash activity of RHA was dominant. RHA calcined at 600–700 °C showed a honeycomb porous structure, displayed broad amorphous SiO2 diffraction peaks and up to 95% content of SiO2, and exhibited the best volcanic ash activity. The increased crystallinity of RHA calcined at 800 °C led to a decrease in its activity. The subcooling treatment with distilled water effectively rebuilt the lamellar structure, reduced the crystallinity, and enhanced the reactivity. The samples incorporated with 600 °C calcined RHA showed higher compressive strength at 3 days compared to 800 °C calcined RHA.

The high value use of agricultural and livestock waste resources in the context of a low carbon economy is a challenge that currently plagues many countries. Yak dung, as a waste resource from livestock farming in the plateau, is considered to be a misplaced treasure. In this work, yak dung was processed into yak dung fiber (YDF) and yak dung ash (YDA), respectively, and the microscopic morphology of the YDF and YDA was assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The elements in the YDA were analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Moreover, cementitious composites were prepared with YDF at 0%, 0.3%, 0.5% and 0.7% and by replacing cement with YDA at 5%, 10% and 15% to assess the workability, mechanical properties and shrinkage properties of cementitious composites containing different YDF types (alkali treated and untreated), contents and different YDA contents. The results showed that alkali-treated YDF and YDA contain a large number of honeycomb structure pores, and the strength of cementitious materials with alkali-treated YDF was higher. The addition of YDF had a negative effect on the fluidity and compressive strength of the cementitious material, but the 0.3% YDF was beneficial in increasing its flexural strength. The compressive strength and flexural strength first increased and then decreased with the increase of YDA content. Both YDF and YDA inhibited the shrinkage of the cement paste, and the shrinkage strain of the cement matrix composites containing 0.3% YDF and 10% YDA was reduced by 51.1% compared to the control group. This work is expected to promote the application of yak dung waste in cementitious materials.

This study elucidates the effects of total air content, pore size distribution, and bubble spacing coefficient on mortar frost resistance. It presents a systematic comparison between mortars obtained with different porous structures. Conventional porous mortars and mortars with controlled porosity were prepared using air-entraining agents (SJ2) and hollow polymer microspheres with a controllable particle size (WEA, 20–80 μm), respectively. The study shows that WEA can construct uniformly sized and regularly shaped pores in mortar and can introduce controllable and stable pore sizes compared with SJ2, which are almost independent of mixing, molding, hydration, and hardening factors. Under equivalent air content, WEA mortar exhibits superior mechanical properties and frost resistance compared to SJ2 mortar, showing a negative correlation with WEA particle size. The frost resistance of WEA (40 μm) mortar with 1% volume content is comparable to that of SJ2 air-entrained mortar with 4% air content; i.e., compared to an SJ2 air-entraining agent, to achieve the same frost resistance level, WEA mortar has lower air content and a larger bubble spacing coefficient.

Permafrost, as a soil type under unique environmental conditions, has bearing characteristics that are highly susceptible to thermo-hydraulic environments. Rapid evaluation of the bearing characteristics of in situ permafrost at various depths in perennially frozen regions is a critical scientific issue urgently needing resolution in the road design and construction sectors in China. To address this, this study investigates the correlation between CPT parameters and laboratory mechanical indices under the combined effects of multiple factors in frozen sandy soils. By conducting both CPT and CBR tests on frozen sandy soils, the study analyzes the trends in changes in cone tip resistance (qc) and CBR values under the influence of temperature (T), moisture content (ω), and compaction degree (K) and establishes a functional relationship between them. Based on the standard requirements for indoor CBR, an evaluation criterion using qc for assessing the bearing capacity of frozen sandy soil is proposed. The results indicate that both CBR values and qc increase initially and then stabilize as K increases. With decreasing temperature, both indices stabilize after an initial increase, with turning points at −3.1 °C for CBR values and −2.5 °C for qc. As ω increases, both indices first increase and then stabilize, with a turning point at 40%ω. There is a robust linear relationship between the CBR values and qc, with the ratio of predicted CBR values to actual values showing a histogram and log-normal distribution accounting for 81% and 51.3%, respectively, within a 20% accuracy level, indicating good predictive performance. Referring to the highway subgrade specifications for indoor CBR, a standard for evaluating the bearing capacity of frozen sandy soils using CPT technology is proposed. This study provides new insights for geological surveys in perennially frozen regions and a theoretical basis for the application of CPT technology in evaluating the bearing capacity of permafrost.

In order to impart the properties of cementitious material to the Tibetan Agar soil, two high-temperature activation mechanisms (HTMA, HTMB) were designed in this study, and the products and hydration-hardening properties of Tibetan Agar soil high-temperature activation mechanism were analyzed by means of SEM, XRD, and XRF. The results show that the main components of Tibetan Aga soil are calcite and quartz; Aga soil is activated by HTMA high-temperature activation, forming the main products of CaO, C2S, CaSiO3, and CaAl2Si2O8, and its products have both air-hardening and water-hardening characteristics; Aga soil is activated by HTMB high-temperature activation, and when the temperature reaches 1250 °C when the clinker is not found in the CaO, the generation of C2S, C3S, C3A, C4AF, and Mg2SiO4 minerals with good water-hardening cementitious properties occurs when the temperature rises to 1350 °C, although the formation of some inert minerals that do not have the cementitious properties, but this temperature activation products of the thermodynamic properties of the best; Enhancing the value of lime saturation degree (KH) and silicon rate (SM) can promote the formation of the products of the C2S and C3S, increase the reactivity of the Aga soil activation products, and increase the hydration heat as well as compressive and flexural strength, combined with the results of the hydration heat and mechanical test, KH is recommended to be 0.9~0.94, SM is recommended to be 1.8~2.4, and alumina ratio (IM) is recommended to be 1.8~2.4 when Aga soil is used with raw materials.
