The efficiency and stability of air entrainment in concrete are sometimes found to be weaker at higher elevation. This phenomenon was attributed to the low atmospheric pressure by many researchers, however, the level of influence of atmospheric pressure on concrete air content dramatically varied among different studies. In order to clarify the effect of low atmospheric pressure on air entrainment in cement-based materials, an on-site experimental study was conducted with a rigorous control of irrelevant variables. The study focused on the air-entraining efficiency in cement paste, mortar, and concrete prepared in both low and standard atmospheric pressures. The air bubble stability in fresh mortar and air void characteristics of hardened mortar in different atmospheric pressures were also included. In the study, little effect of low atmospheric pressure on the air-entraining efficiency and air bubble stability in mortar with studied air-entraining agents (AEAs) was found. The air void characteristics were found to be similar between mortar with SJ-2 or 303R type AEAs prepared in different atmospheric pressures. Concrete with either SJ-2 or 303R type AEA prepared in low atmospheric pressure presented a satisfactory air content. These conclusions indicate that it is not necessary to worry excessively about the potentially adverse effect of atmospheric pressure on the frost resistance of concrete if a suitable AEA is applied. Additionally, a supplementary mortar study found that the low temperature of raw materials stored at high elevation would significantly weaken the air entrainment, reminding that potential causes in addition to low atmospheric pressure should also be taken seriously.

Cement-emulsified asphalt (CEA) has been widely used in slab ballastless track and asphalt pavement cold recycling projects because of its high stiffness and toughness. In CEA material, emulsifiers and asphalt affect the cement’s hydration process and microstructure. Thus, to further investigate the effects of anionic emulsifiers (AEs) and anionic emulsified asphalt (AEA) with different demulsification rates on the hydration process and microstructure of cement, two types of AE (rapid-setting and slow-setting) and their corresponding AEA were used to prepare modified cement pastes. First, it was confirmed that the AEs and AEA delayed cement hydration by measuring the setting time, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, and electrical resistivity of the cement paste. Then, the microstructure of the cement paste was determined with mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and it was found that AEs and AEA have varying degrees of inhibitory effects on the formation of the cement paste microstructure. Finally, based on the energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) element content of the cement paste and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) on the two AEs, the inhibition mechanism of AE and AEA with different demulsifier rates on the cement hydration process was analyzed. The experimental results showed that both AEs and AEA delayed the hydration process of cement to varying degrees and altered the microstructure of cement, and slow setting anionic emulsified asphalt (SAEA) had the greatest impact on the hydration process and microstructure of cement. Compared to pure cement paste, the initial setting time of cement paste mixed with SAEA was delayed by 73.9%, and the final setting time was delayed by 66.7%. After adding SAEA, the most probable aperture of the cement paste increased from 62.50 nm to 71.19 nm after one day of hydration. Due to the fact that there were more carboxyl groups with negative charges, more -COO− was adsorbed onto the surface of cement particles in the slow-cracking anionic emulsifier (SAE); compared with the rapid-setting anionic emulsifier (RAE) and the rapid-setting anionic emulsified asphalt (RAEA), the SAE and the SAEA had a stronger delaying effect on the hydration reaction of cement.

The insufficient optimization of calcination process parameters severely restricts the enhancement of rice husk ash (RHA) volcanic ash activity. In this study, an intelligent muffle furnace was used for multi-parameter coupled regulation, combined with microscopic characterization techniques, to elucidate the effects of temperature, cooling mode, heating rate, and holding time on the reactivity of RHA. The results showed that the effect of calcination temperature on the volcanic ash activity of RHA was dominant. RHA calcined at 600–700 °C showed a honeycomb porous structure, displayed broad amorphous SiO2 diffraction peaks and up to 95% content of SiO2, and exhibited the best volcanic ash activity. The increased crystallinity of RHA calcined at 800 °C led to a decrease in its activity. The subcooling treatment with distilled water effectively rebuilt the lamellar structure, reduced the crystallinity, and enhanced the reactivity. The samples incorporated with 600 °C calcined RHA showed higher compressive strength at 3 days compared to 800 °C calcined RHA.

In order to address the problem of the durability deficiency of concrete in wave splash zones in a harsh marine environment, this paper investigates the effects of coupled carbonation, sulfate, and chloride salts on the strength, capillary water absorption, and ion migration properties of cement concrete incorporated with metakaolin, and characterizes the pore structural changes with the mercury-pressure method and AC impedance technique. The results show that, compared with a single chloride salt environment, the improvement in mortar strength and impermeability with carbonation coupling is almost positively correlated with the calcium content in the specimen, and renders its pore structure more refined and denser. In contrast, the presence of sulfate reduces mortar strength and increases the ion migration coefficient. When the three factors of sulfate, carbonation, and chloride salt were coupled, damage to the strength and pore structure of the specimens was the most significant, but the specimen incorporated with 30% metakaolin had its strength improved compared with the blank group specimen; from the perspective of pore structural parameters and transport coefficient, the microstructure was denser, and the impermeability was significantly improved.

Under the action of freeze–thaw cycles, the internal temperature and water distribution of slope soils in cold regions change significantly, which directly affects the stability of slopes. In order to study the differences in hydrothermal reactions at different depths and their impacts on the stability of slopes. This study establishes both a freeze–thaw model and a hydrothermal coupling model, combining field measurements with numerical simulations to examine the dynamic changes in hydrothermal characteristics within the slope. The results indicate that the variation in slope temperature with depth can be divided into three stages: initial freezing, stable freezing, and thawing. In the freezing stage, the negative temperature gradient drives water to migrate towards the freezing front, forming segregated ice and inducing frost heave. In the thawing stage, the latent heat released by the phase change in segregated ice promotes water to move towards the slope toe, increasing the water content there and indirectly exacerbating the risk of slope instability. The heat and moisture transfer in frozen soil slopes shows non-linear and dynamic characteristics. The unique process of one-way freezing and two-way thawing makes the thawing rate 1.35 times that of the freezing rate, and this asymmetric characteristic is the key to understanding the mechanism of slope instability.

Ultra-low humidity environments will lead to changes in the microstructure of C–S–H, which will reduce the mechanical properties and service life of cement-based concrete. Thus, to further explore the mechanism on the microscale, this paper studied the water migration and the changes in the hydration products in white cement that was cured for 7 days at 20 °C and at different ambient relative humidities (RHs). The migration and transformation of different types of water in cement paste were studied by low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). At the same time, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to analyze semi-quantitatively the crystal phase in the hydration products. The results showed that in the first 7 days of the curing process, the content of the different types of water and the hydration products in the cement samples were influenced by the ambient RH. The total water content of the samples will decrease with the decrease in the RH; when the RH decreases to 54% or below, the chemically bound water in the samples will increase with the decline in the RH. Additionally, when the ambient RH is lower than 54%, the grossular will gradually transform into hydrogrossular crystals with the decrease in the RH, and the hibschite with less chemically bound water will transform into katoite with more chemically bound water. In future research, the water migration and hydrate changes under different curing ages, drying processes, and coupling effects should be explored.
