In recent years, crop yield prediction has become a research hotspot in the field of agricultural science, playing a decisive role in the economic development of every country. Therefore, accurate and timely prediction of crop yields is of great significance for the national formulation of relevant economic policies and provides a reasonable basis for agricultural decision-making. The results obtained through prediction can selectively observe the impact of factors such as crop growth cycles, soil changes, and rainfall distribution on crop yields, which is crucial for predicting crop yields. Although traditional machine learning methods can obtain an estimated crop yield value and to some extent reflect the current growth status of crops, their prediction accuracy is relatively low, with significant deviations from actual yields, and they fail to achieve satisfactory results. To address these issues, after in-depth research on the development and current status of crop yield prediction, and a comparative analysis of the advantages and problems of domestic and foreign yield prediction algorithms, this paper summarizes the methods of crop yield prediction based on deep learning. This includes analyzing and summarizing existing major prediction models, analyzing prediction methods for different crops, and finally providing relevant views and suggestions on the future development direction of applying deep learning to crop yield prediction research.

The categorization and identification of agricultural imagery constitute the fundamental requisites of contemporary farming practices. Among the various methods employed for image classification and recognition, the convolutional neural network (CNN) stands out as the most extensively utilized and swiftly advancing machine learning technique. Its immense potential for advancing precision agriculture cannot be understated. By comprehensively reviewing the progress made in CNN applications throughout the entire crop growth cycle, this study aims to provide an updated account of these endeavors spanning the years 2020 to 2023. During the seed stage, classification networks are employed to effectively categorize and screen seeds. In the vegetative stage, image classification and recognition play a prominent role, with a diverse range of CNN models being applied, each with its own specific focus. In the reproductive stage, CNN’s application primarily centers around target detection for mechanized harvesting purposes. As for the post-harvest stage, CNN assumes a pivotal role in the screening and grading of harvested products. Ultimately, through a comprehensive analysis of the prevailing research landscape, this study presents the characteristics and trends of current investigations, while outlining the future developmental trajectory of CNN in crop identification and classification.

With the continuous growth of the global population and the increasing demand for crop yield, enhancing crop productivity has emerged as a crucial research objective on a global scale. Weeds, being one of the primary abiotic factors impacting crop yield, contribute to approximately 13.2% of annual food loss. In recent years, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology has developed rapidly and its maturity has led to widespread utilization in improving crop productivity and reducing management costs. Concurrently, deep learning technology has become a prominent tool in image recognition. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) has achieved remarkable outcomes in various domains, including agriculture, such as weed detection, pest identification, plant/fruit counting, maturity grading, etc. This study provides an overview of the development of UAV platforms, the classification of UAV platforms and their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the types and characteristics of data collected by common vision sensors used in agriculture, and discusses the application of deep learning technology in weed detection. The manuscript presents current advancements in UAV technology and CNNs in weed management tasks while emphasizing the existing limitations and future trends in its development process to assist researchers working on applying deep learning techniques to weed management.

Spectral imaging technique has been widely applied in plant phenotype analysis to improve plant trait selection and genetic advantages. The latest developments and applications of various optical imaging techniques in plant phenotypes were reviewed, and their advantages and applicability were compared. X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT) and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) are more suitable for the three-dimensional reconstruction of plant surfaces, tissues, and organs. Chlorophyll fluorescence imaging (ChlF) and thermal imaging (TI) can be used to measure the physiological phenotype characteristics of plants. Specific symptoms caused by nutrient deficiency can be detected by hyperspectral and multispectral imaging, LiDAR, and ChlF. Future plant phenotype research based on spectral imaging can be more closely integrated with plant physiological processes. It can more effectively support the research in related disciplines, such as metabolomics and genomics, and focus on micro-scale activities, such as oxygen transport and intercellular chlorophyll transmission.
