The purpose of this study is to analyze how managers of sections that belong to the chemical industry make use of management control systems (MCS) in order to facilitate relationships between the labor force of the owner enterprise and employees of outsourced companies, through collaboration and daily bases of coworking. It intends to consider how they allocate their available resources to the contractor characteristics and how, together, they confront external factors. The research strategy is based on a case study in which the uses of MCS by the most relevant Spanish chemical contractor influence the relationship with subcontractors in terms of strategic goals, trust, risk management or performance evaluation. Findings derived from four semi-structured interviews conducted with the central contractor and three subcontractors belonging to each of the three separate activities’ categories suggest that using MCS as controlling or enabling, in this setting, can have lasting and deep effects in the alignment of subcontractors’ strategic orientation to match the contractor’s, in the unification of risk management mechanisms, in the enhanced trust and collaboration in the coworking space, as well as in the performance evaluation criteria applied.

Following the resource-based view, this research empirically explores the role of formal and informal management control in mobilizing export resources to develop export capabilities, influencing the export performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in an interorganizational relationship context. Empirical data were collected using a survey administrated online to finance managers in Spanish SMEs which use foreign intermediaries to access export markets. In this setting, evidence mainly suggests, first, that management control systems (MCSs) play a relevant mediating role between the effect of, on the one hand, resources on capabilities, and, on the other hand, resources and capabilities on performance. Second, that MCSs and capabilities play a interrelated double mediating effect between the impact of resources on performance; more specifically, a significant double indirect effect is found (1) between financial resources, behavior control, customer relationship building capability and performance, and (2) between physical resources, behavior control, customer relationship building capability and performance.

The aim of this study is to explore the strategy and supply chain management characteristics of berry-related companies to face the bargaining power unbalance that fosters the European fresh food supply chain; branding-differentiation strategies are particularly explored as mechanisms to create sustainable value for all players along the chain. To this end, a case study is deeply analyzed to find out the different supply chain management mechanisms used by an international berry marketer in order to strengthen the adoption of a commodity differentiation strategy through the creation and positioning of a high-value brand. Data were obtained through 15 semi-structured interviews. Findings suggest that strategic moves towards differentiation and positioning might be bolstered by the development and management of stable relationships with the different members involved in the supply chain. Additionally, supply chain risk-control mechanisms, rather than having a central role in the management of the various members of the chain, turned out to be support mechanisms that work together with corporate identity alignment and inter-organizational trust in order to ensure cooperation toward differentiation and positioning in the market.

To achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the support for the internationalization of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSME) for inclusive and sustainable growth needs improvement. Decided to accomplish these global goals, many regional governments have established regional public agencies aiming at increasing MSME competitiveness. In the area of internationalization, regional governments have created Regional Export Promotion Agencies (REPA), which are a type of Trade Promotion Organization (TPO) that has been implemented, for instance, in all Spanish regions. However, we found a gap in the literature since there is not enough evidence on the utility of the services provided by TPOs. Thus, the aim of this paper is to explore how a REPA interacts with firms when they internationalize and cooperates with the corresponding Regional Development Agency (RDA) during this process. The preliminary findings suggest that a better coordination between both Regional Agencies is required. In addition, further financial measures to support firms in the first stages of the internationalization processes as well as an improvement of communication activities to increase awareness of the services offered are demanded by the firms.

Extensive research results in inconsistent findings regarding the advantages and risks of exchanging management control information in collaborative relationships between buyers and suppliers. This inconsistency is due, in part, to ignoring whether the information shared is useful. This study analyzes the influence of transaction characteristics (asset specificity, opportunistic behaviors, and resource control) on the usefulness of the format and the content of such sharing. Samples of purchasing and sales managers differ in how their assessment of this usefulness reflects the influence of transactional characteristics, as well as the format (timeliness, aggregation, and integration) and content (scope and symmetry) of the management control information itself.

Firms are involved in supply chains to achieve operative efficiency, develop strategic advantages, and generate financial profits. However, there is limited evidence regarding how governance mechanisms influence the generation of value from collaboration. Furthermore, how a particular buyer or supplier position provides benefits to partners is unclear. In this paper, we examine the roles of management control information as both a governance mechanism and a source of dynamic capabilities, and its interaction with relational variables to create and capture value following a demand-side perspective. Two separate studies are developed using multigroup structural equation modelling, which analyse buyer and supplier positions played by the firm as a complex supply chain node. The results demonstrate that the characteristics of information sharing have different impacts on value, depending on the role played in the relationship. Although timely information sharing appears to be the key source of operative and financial value in downstream relationships, disaggregated information sharing generates additional strategic advantages in upstream relationships. The presence of different control-trust frameworks mediates the process of value generation, leading to different managerial and theoretical implications.

To analyse the utility perceived by managers of centers of primary care about management tools (budget and balanced scorecard), together their impact on human resources motivation. Qualitative study (case study) based on grounded theory performed between January and June 2014. Units of Clinical Management of Primary Health (UGCAP) in Metropolitan Health Area of Seville, Spain. UGCAP managers and Health Area (CEO) managers. Data were collected through 8 semi-structured interviews using non-probabilistic intentional sampling with representation and sufficiency criteria of discourse. Interviews were recorded, literally transcripted and analysis through in-vivo codes. Both tools are fully implemented but differently used in primary care centers. Budget is perceived as a coercive management tool, which has been imposed for cost saving; however, it is scarcely adequate for day-by-day management. While balanced scorecard is a more flexible tool that allows identifying financial and welfare problems, budgeting limits heavily reduce the possibility of implementing adequate solutions. The policy of incentives is not adequate either, leading on de-motivation. This study shows that budgeting restrictions have led to a significant reduction in autonomy of Spanish Primary Care centers. Management decision making is much centralised, also focused on cost saving over quality of healthcare. As a result, two needs emerge for the future: increasing centers’ autonomy and improving staff commitment through training and professional development programs.

This study analyses the presence of gender segregation in Spanish exporting firms. Both women's access to managerial positions (vertical segregation) and women's achievement of managerial roles that are socially associated with communal attributes (horizontal segregation) are tested. We argue that boundary-spanning (henceforth, boundary management) in export interfirm relationships benefits from relational and communal skills and therefore could not only offer an opportunity for women to gain access to management positions but also put them at risk of falling into a rut before achieving other control-based managerial roles. This empirical study examines the characteristics (personal and firm-level) of Spanish female managers in charge of export management through independent channels. A multivariate analysis has been performed to compare female managers with male managers both in boundary management and in the position of finance director, a control position closer to a socially stereotyped masculine role. The results show that women have slightly higher access to boundary management jobs than finance management jobs, as well as a significantly lower promotion time than male colleagues, but they also corroborate that there is a smaller percentage of women than men in any management positions, with female managers working in younger firms with fewer resources for export activity

CADF deals with multiple diversity sources to balance accuracy and interpretability. To enhance diversity, CADF merges different correlated-adjusted decision trees. Results suggest CADF can compete in accuracy with much more complex ensemble models.Superior accuracy of CADF is tested through different measures and statistical tests.Oppositely to 'black-box' models, CADF produces logical, human understanding rules. Credit risk assessment is a critical topic for finance activity and bankruptcy prediction that has been broadly explored using statistical models and Machine Learning methods. Recently, studies have suggested the use of ensemble strategies to enhance credit modelling performance. However, accuracy is obtained at the expense of interpretability, leading to the reluctance of financial industry to employ ensemble models in favour of simpler models. In this work we introduce an ensemble approach based on merged decision trees, the correlated-adjusted decision forest (CADF), to produce both accurate and comprehensible models. As main innovation, our proposal explores the combination of complementary sources of diversity as mechanisms to optimise model's structure, which leads to a manageable number of comprehensive decision rules without sacrificing performance. We evaluate our approach in comparison to individual classifiers and alternative ensemble strategies (gradient boosting, random forests). Empirical results suggest CADF is an encouraging solution for credit risk problems, being able to compete in accuracy with much complex proposals while producing a rule-based structure directly useful for managerial decisions.

Departing on our limited understanding of how risks give rise to management controls and performance, this paper aims to better understand the role of Performance Measurement Systems (PMS) and Risk Management Systems (RMS) in food chain businesses. To do so, both case-based research and survey methods are used to develop a comprehensive inventory of the main risks that food supply food managers face, and to provide insight regarding the management control mechanisms they use for enhancing relational performance. Results shows a trend toward a higher management control in food supply relationship, with positive effects on partners’ organisational fit and performance. However some risk sources are still under-managed, as those related to technical uncertainties (transportation problems, long-distance, uncertain technology) and second-tier problems, which represent upcoming challenges in food supply networks.

A logistics customer service model is a critical competitive advantage that enhances both customer satisfaction and firm performance. Researchers have developed several models for assessing customer requirements, measuring product performance, and positioning products. However, handling customers' linguistic preferences and uncertain product attributes remain significant and unresolved problems. In this study, we develop an integrative framework that incorporates the Kano model, fuzzy distances, and 2-tuple fuzzy-linguistic model to manage customer-service logistics more effectively. Following a five-module architecture, we consider numerical, fuzzy, and linguistic data on product attributes and customer requirements. We first evaluate product attributes using utility-value functions and converted into satisfaction scores related to Kano categories. We then consider raw importance assessments to obtain an overall satisfaction score for each market and product. An empirical example illustrates the benefits of this integrative approach. The results show that our proposal can effectively manage logistics customer service, enabling managers to identify targets and formulate competitive strategies to enhance customer satisfaction.

AbstractThis research is intended to contribute to knowledge about the role of management control systems (MCS) in interorganisational relationships analysing gender diversity of boundary managers. By means of an exploratory quantitative analysis in the setting of externalised export channels, we research the effect of gender differences on implementation level of MCS control types (output, behaviour and social controls) and on MCS use mode (diagnostic and interactive uses). Results do not show significant differences related to gender regarding level of implementation of control types, or utility and importance conferred to use modes of MCS information. Notwithstanding, results suggest a slight preference of women for interactive use, according to skills and characteristics socially attributed to this gender
