Flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machines have been gaining interest over the last few decades. This is due to the several advantages that this type of machines provides. These advantages include high torque density due to the flux-focusing effects, favorable thermal management due to the location of PMs on the stator, passive and hence robust rotor structure which is suitable for high-speed applications, etc. The two-part companion papers are going to provide a comprehensive analysis of FSPM machines in terms of opportunities and challenges. In the first part of these two-part series, it covers the principle theory, computation methods, various topologies of FSPM machines, and the comparison with other PM machines. Meanwhile, the basic performance characteristics and design requirements, viz. torque density, over-load torque capability, flux-weakening capability, fault-tolerance capability, as well as the latest development, are also provided.

This paper presentsan investigation of a 3D-magnetic flux permanent magnet synchronous motor (3D-MF PMSM) used for electric vehicle applications. The investigated 3D-MF PMSM consists of an integrated radial-flux and axial-flux structure. It has two radial-flux air-gaps and two axial-flux air-gaps, as well as a toroidal winding wound stator. The integrated structure helps to concentrate all the flux within the motor to maximize torque production. Moreover, there are no end-windings in this motor and all the stator windings effectively are used in torque production. A comprehensive performance evaluation, in terms of the back-electromotive force, average output torque, cogging torque, torque ripple, flux-weakening capability, etc., of the investigated 3D-MF PMSM is conducted. An interior PMSM is purposely included as a benchmark for comparison. The results show that compared to the benchmark interior PMSM, the original 3D-MF PMSM exhibits significantly improved torque density, higher power factor, and higher efficiency, but suffers from serious cogging torque and torque ripple. Accordingly, a skewed arrangement is introduced to the 3D-MF PMSM. As a result, the cogging torque and torque ripple are significantly reduced.

Due to the advantages of high torque density, high efficiency, and wide constant power speed range (CPSR), interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) are gaining more and more attention in electric vehicle (EV) applications. There are many geometrical parameters in IPMSMs, and some of them have significant impact on the performance of such machines. This paper presents a parametric sensitivity study of the rotor geometrical parameters for a V-shaped magnet IPMSM. In which, both the individual sensitivity and the combined sensitivity with considering the interaction effects of these parameters are performed by finite-element analysis (FEA). The electromagnetic characteristics in the lowspeed range, including average torque, torque ripple, cogging torque, power density, power factor, efficiency, etc. and the flux-weakening capability in the high-speed range are investigated in detail. Based on the parametric study, the V-shaped magnet IPMSM is optimized. The results show that the performance of the optimal design is significantly improved. In addition, the validity of the FEA simulation results is verified by experiment with a prototype.

Flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machines have received an intense amount of research interest in recent years, due to their advantages of high torque/power density, favorable thermal management, as well as passive and robust rotor structure. The purpose of this two-part companion articles is to provide a comprehensive overview of FSPM machines in terms of opportunities and challenges. In the early part of this two-part series, the operating principle, the modeling methods, the various machine topologies of FSPM machines, as well as the comparison with other PM machines, have been analyzed and investigated. Building upon Part (I), this article covers the analysis and design of winding configurations, the practical techniques to minimize the cogging torque and torque ripple, the control strategies, the technical challenges, as well as the emerging trends of FSPM machines. Moreover, the key features of the FSPM machines, including the merits and demerits of such machines as well as their associated techniques, are highlighted and summarized.

Long-distance heavy-duty electric vehicles, e.g., electric trucks, expect demanding requirements from the electric drive system, including high starting torque, high torque density, high power factor, high efficiency, etc. Permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) have been widely used for traction applications. However, the high cost and associated environmental issues due to the rare-earth permanent magnet material intensify researchers to explore new solutions. Accordingly, a brushless electrically-excited synchronous machine (EESM) is designed and investigated in this paper. The brushless EESM is also quantitatively compared with a PMSM candidate for the aforementioned application. Differing from conventional EESMs in which the brushes and slip rings are used for rotor field winding excitation, a contactless/brushless rotating transformer is adopted for the presented EESM to feed the rotor field winding. It is shown that the interior PMSM exhibits higher efficiency in low-speed region, but lower efficiency in high-speed region. By contrast, the brushless EESM exhibits lower efficiency in low-speed region, but much higher efficiency in high-speed region. Hence, the EESM is more suitable for long-distance heavy-duty electric vehicle applications where significant highspeed operations are required. Moreover, compared to the PMSM, the EESM is more cost-effective, sustainable, and environmentally friendly due to the absence of the rare-earth permanent magnet material. Both the PMSM and the EESM are prototyped and manufactured. Experimental results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the presented designs.

Permanent magnet Vernier motors (PMVMs) possess the advantage of high torque density for high-performance applications. However, the low power factor challenge makes it unacceptable for direct-drive applications. A lack of accurate modeling method based on the motor sizing law, i.e., air-gap flux density, linear current density, and motor geometry parameters, raises difficulties for machine designers to further conduct research on the performance metrics. This article presents a deep investigation into the analytical modeling technique for surface PMVMs (SPMVMs). It can identify an accurate approach to obtain the performance metrics, including electromagnetic torque and power factor. The modeling technique is developed based on the conformal mapping method. By using this, both radial and tangential permeability functions can be calculated to obtain the motor magnetic loading accurately, considering the leakage flux. The slotting effect on both air-gap flux density and armature-winding function is analyzed to achieve a precise formula for torque and power factor computations. The new modeling technique is applied to integral-slot SPMVMs with different slot/pole combinations, gear ratios, slot openings, and magnet thickness to evaluate the impacts of motor parameters on high-power-factor and high-torque-density designs. Finally, an SPMVM with the characteristics of high torque density and power factor is fabricated to verify the analytical model at the power rating of 0.8 kW and the speed of 500 r/min. The experimental results show that the prototype exhibits a high power factor of 0.9 and high torque density 22.5 Nm/L.
