The use of medicinal plants has increased significantly in recent years. More than 80 of the worlds population uses medicinal plants to treat themselves. Many antibacterial and anti-inflammatory synthetic drugs are available in medical practice. However, recent tendency of increasing capability of resistance of bacteria to usage of antibacterial drugs of different groups is taking place. Considering the wide range of pharmacological and antimicrobial activity of safflower flower extracts and available vitamins in their composition, it was decided to create a preparation based on the CO2 extract of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) in the form of an ophthalmic emulsion. The aim of this research is to study the composition and antimicrobial activity of the extract and ophthalmic emulsion drops against test strains of microorganisms. The subject of this study is the ophthalmic emulsions from flowers of Kazakhstan species of Akmai safflower, collected in the flowering stage in southern Kazakhstan in August 2021. The component composition was determined using gas chromatography with the Agilent 7890A/5975C mass spectrometry technique. A study of the antimicrobial activity of the ophthalmic emulsion drop extracts was performed with two strains of Gram-positive bacteria, one strain of Gram-negative bacteria, and one culture of fungi. The following biologically active substances were determined from the GC-MS results: tridecane 94, tricosane 93, hexacosane 93, dodecanoic acid 92, pentacosane 91, and linoleic acid 63.7. The investigated emulsion-type eye drop shows bactericidal activity against S. aureus ATCC 6538-P, where the zone of growth suppression under the ophthalmic emulsion action corresponded to 9.0±0.0mm. The tested ophthalmic emulsion drops show the presumed biological activity against conditionally pathogenic bacteria. The results of chromatographic analysis and antimicrobial activity of the tested samples indicate the prospects for their further study for use as anti-infectious (anti-inflammatory) agents in medicine.

Species of the genus Artemisia are well known for their use as ingredients in ancient medicine. The advantage of using plant extracts compared to individual pharmaceutical ingredients is the rate of adaptation of the pathogenic microorganisms to the drug. Due to the rapid development of multidrug-resistance in microorganisms in the field, it is essential to search for novel, effective drugs with low toxicity. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to isolate and study the biologically active substances obtained from various substances in the raw materials of Artemisia cina Berg. The identification of the main biologically active components was performed using the method of chromato-mass spectrometry. Moreover, the antiviral activity of several extracts was studied using the method of measuring limiting dilutions (the Reed–Mench method), with some modifications. For the first time, the biological activity of extracts from the raw material of Artemisia cina Berg. upon the SARS-CoV-2 virus was confirmed. All the obtained extracts exhibited nontoxic effects in animals, with an LD50 greater than 2 g/kg. Comprehensive toxicological analyses are also presented in the study, such as those of the biochemical parameters of urine after one day and one week of the extracts’ administration in mice at a dose of 2 g/kg body weight. In all groups of animals that received extracts of Artemisia cina Berg., a slight increase in the presence of red blood cells in their urine was observed one day following the administration of the extracts. This increase decreased somewhat after a week; however, it remained higher than the levels observed in the control animals. In the three groups, there was also a slight increase in the amount of ketones in the urine. Two weeks following the administration of the extracts to these groups, the internal organs of the animals were examined. The examination showed that the internal organs of the animals that received the extracts were not visibly different from those of the control animals in terms of their size or appearance. The weight of the internal organs of the animals that received the extracts was also similar to the weight of the internal organs of the control animals, illustrating the absence of toxicity.

The genus Lepidium L. from Brassicaceae Burnett. family covers over 150 species with an almost cosmopolitan spread. In Kazakhstan, 21 species are described, of which four species are characterized by medicinal properties (L. crassifolium Waldst. et Kit., L. perfoliatum L., L. ruderale L., and L. latifolium L.), used in folk medicine as means of antibacterial, irritant, laxative, antitumor, analgesic, and anthelmintic action. Methods. Raw materials were collected from Almaty region (Republic of Kazakhstan). Lepidium latifolium L. herbs carbon dioxide extract (CO2 extract) was obtained by subcritical carbon dioxide extraction. A gas chromatograph with a mass spectrometric detector was used to determine the component composition of the extract. Antimicrobial activity was determined by two methods: the micromethod of serial dilution and the disc-diffusion method. Four microbial test strains were used: Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538-P, Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC 10031, and Candida albicans ATCC 10231. Results. The technology of carbon dioxide extraction has undoubted advantages over traditional methods of extraction: it has a controlled selectivity in relation to groups of biologically active substances, allows deep extraction, and maximizes the release of rich complexes of compounds contained in plants. In this study, firstly, the CO2 extract was obtained under subcritical conditions from the aerial part of L. latifolium L., and the composition was determined. Hexane was the best solvent for CO2 extract, and 40 components were identified. Screening of antimicrobial activity of the L. latifoliums CO2 extract showed the essential activity of all clinically significant strains tested: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Candida albicans. Conclusions. This research showed that the CO2 extract of the raw material of Lepidium latifolium L. contains biologically active compounds exhibiting an essential antimicrobial effect, and therefore it is possible to recommend for the development of various drugs for use in medical practice.

BACKGROUND: At present, more than 8000 sesquiterpene lactones have been isolated and described from natural sources, a significant part of which has cytotoxicity and antitumor activity. One of the practically available sesquiterpene lactones is arglabin, which, as a renewable material, is used for the synthesis of new compounds. The article presents data on the study of cytotoxicity and antitumor activity of the arglabin and its derivatives using molecular modeling methods and, in the experiment in vitro and in vivo. AIM: The aim of this work is to study the cytotoxicity and antitumor activity of new compounds based on the sesquiterpene lactone arglabin using molecular modeling and experimental pharmacology. METHODS: ChemDraw programs and a set of AutoDock programs were used for computer simulation. Molecular docking was carried out using the Maestro graphical interface of the Schrödinger Suite software package (Schrödinger, LLC, New York, NY, 2017). Docking modes standard precision and XP (extra precision) were used. In in vitro experiments, the antitumor activity of compound samples was studied in models of 60 human tumor cell lines, and clonogenic C6 rat glioma cells. The antitumor activity of the samples was studied in experiments in vivo on white outbred rats with transplanted tumors and was evaluated by the inhibition of tumor growth and the magnitude of the increase in average life expectancy. CONCLUSION: When studying the antitumor activity on 60 cell lines of tumor cells (NCI60), clonogenic cells of C6 rat glioma, a high antitumor activity of some arglabin derivatives was established. The connection between the structure of arglabin derivatives and their inhibitory effect on farnesyl protein transferase, topoisomerases -I and -II was studied.

Plant materials and preparations based on it continue to play an important role in the pharmacotherapy of many chronic and sluggish human diseases. Over the past two decades, there has been a very high consumer demand for medicines and preventive products obtained from natural plant sources. This is due to the complex effect of biologically active substances, vitamins, antioxidants of plant origin on the human body and the practical absence of side effects. An analysis of the development of phytopharmacology shows that the most promising direction in the field of the development of phytopreparations is the scientifically based use of the experience of traditional and modern medicine. One of the promising types of raw material - medicinal plant safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L). It contains vitamins A, E, unsaturated fatty acids and other biologically active substances in large quantities, that determine antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant properties. Thanks to these pharmacological effects, the content of vitamins is promising for the development and introduction of a drug used in the field of ophthalmology. To this end we have searched and analysed scientific publications about safflower – Carthamus tinctorius. All studies used in this review have been found using «Google Scholar» scientific search engine and were selected from publications indexed in Web of science, PubMed, Medline, E–library, and Cyberleninka databases.
