The main research objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the impregnation of Twaron® fabric with various shear thickening fluids (STFs) on the stab resistance at quasi-static conditions—being the main parameter characterizing the future application of the impregnated textiles in the scope of the new functionality of the elaborated protection of the multi-layer system. It was found that the STF/Twaron® fabric composites required significantly higher loading than the untreated fabric to achieve spike penetration. In the composite fabric tests, the spike did not fully puncture the material.

The samples of poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) were synthesized by radical polymerization. The amount of monomer and solvent was constant as opposed to an amount of initiator which was changing. No clear relationship between polymerization conditions and the molecular weight of the polymer was found, probably due to the branched configuration of produced polymer. Bactericidal interactions in all samples against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria have been demonstrated. However, the observed effect has various intensities, depending on the type of bacteria and the type of sample.

Currently, there is a wide range of materials for motorcyclists available on the market that have a significant ability to absorb impact energy. Understanding the aging processes of materials is crucial for guaranteeing the long-term durability and safety of a new product. For this reason, the effect of accelerated aging on the mechanical and structural properties of the multifunctional materials used in commercial protectors was analyzed. The accelerated aging considered in this study simulated 3 years of use under real conditions. Then, DMTA and FT-IR research, as well as impact tests, were carried out on the commercially available protectors for motorcyclists, before and after the accelerated aging processes. Structural analysis using FT-IR showed no significant changes in the structure of the polymers used for producing the protectors. The DMA test results are consistent with those obtained from the impact study. Both methods showed that the samples maintain their protective properties, after accelerated aging. All of the examined protectors show that an increase in force is transferred through the sample, after the accelerated aging processes, but they still provide protection, according to the ISO standard.

A poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) nonwoven was produced by the blowing out technique. The basic structural and mechanical properties of the obtained material were measured and described. It was found that the formed nonwoven has a smooth and delicate structure with quite weak mechanical properties. Its antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria were shown. Some medical applications were suggested.

Designing usable forms of topical haemostatic agents is the most important activity during the design process, resulting in strengthened functional properties of the final medical devices. This study aimed to propose indications for a research programme based on risk management supporting the development of two usable forms of a topical haemostatic agent: chitosan/alginate lyophilized foam and chitosan/alginate impregnated gauze. Both of the usable forms of the topical haemostatic agent, being the main part of the modified combat gauze, were fabricated using the chitosan/alginate complex. Risk analysis is helpful in developing an appropriate research programme, significantly reducing the risk to an acceptable level.

This study examined the possibility of using various types of waste paper—used newsprint (NP), used lightweight coated paper (LWC), used office paper (OP), and used corrugated cardboard (CC)—for the removal of anionic dyes, Acid Red 18 (AR18) and Acid Yellow 23 (AY23), and cationic dyes, Basic Violet 10 (BV10) and Basic Red 46 (BR46), from aqueous solutions. The scope of this research included the characterization of sorbents (FTIR, SEM, BET surface area, porosity, pHPZC, effectiveness of water coloration), determination of pH effect on the effectiveness of dye sorption, sorption kinetics (pseudo-first-order model, second-order model, intraparticular diffusion model), and the maximum sorption capacity (Langmuir models and Freundlich model) of the tested sorbents. The use of waste paper materials as sorbents was found to not pose any severe risk of aquatic environment contamination. AR18, AY23, and BV10 sorption intensities were the highest at pH 2, and that of RB46 at pH 6. The waste paper sorbents proved particularly effective in removing cationic dyes, like in the case of, e.g., NP, which had a sorption capacity that reached 38.87 mg/g and 90.82 mg/g towards BV10 and BR46, respectively, and were comparable with that of selected activated carbons (literature data).
