As the world is on the verge of venturing into fifth-generation communication technology and embracing concepts such as virtualization and cloudification, the most crucial aspect remains “security”, as more and more data get attached to the internet. This paper reflects a model designed to measure the various parameters of data in a network such as accuracy, precision, confusion matrix, and others. XGBoost is employed on the NSL-KDD (network socket layer-knowledge discovery in databases) dataset to get the desired results. The whole motive is to learn about the integrity of data and have a higher accuracy in the prediction of data. By doing so, the amount of mischievous data floating in a network can be minimized, making the network a secure place to share information. The more secure a network is, the fewer situations where data is hacked or modified. By changing various parameters of the model, future research can be done to get the most out of the data entering and leaving a network. The most important player in the network is data, and getting to know it more closely and precisely is half the work done. Studying data in a network and analyzing the pattern and volume of data leads to the emergence of a solid Intrusion Detection System (IDS), that keeps the network healthy and a safe place to share confidential information.

The field of Medicine and Healthcare has attained revolutionary advancements in the last forty years. Within this period, the actual reasons behind numerous diseases were unveiled, novel diagnostic methods were designed, and new medicines were developed. Even after all these achievements, diseases like cancer continue to haunt us since we are still vulnerable to them. Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally; about one in every six people die suffering from it. Among many types of cancers, the lung and colon variants are the most common and deadliest ones. Together, they account for more than 25% of all cancer cases. However, identifying the disease at an early stage significantly improves the chances of survival. Cancer diagnosis can be automated by using the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which allows us to assess more cases in less time and cost. With the help of modern Deep Learning (DL) and Digital Image Processing (DIP) techniques, this paper inscribes a classification framework to differentiate among five types of lung and colon tissues (two benign and three malignant) by analyzing their histopathological images. The acquired results show that the proposed framework can identify cancer tissues with a maximum of 96.33% accuracy. Implementation of this model will help medical professionals to develop an automatic and reliable system capable of identifying various types of lung and colon cancers.

Among an electricity provider’s non-technical losses, electricity theft has the most severe and dangerous effects. Fraudulent electricity consumption decreases the supply quality, increases generation load, causes legitimate consumers to pay excessive electricity bills, and affects the overall economy. The adaptation of smart grids can significantly reduce this loss through data analysis techniques. The smart grid infrastructure generates a massive amount of data, including the power consumption of individual users. Utilizing this data, machine learning and deep learning techniques can accurately identify electricity theft users. In this paper, an electricity theft detection system is proposed based on a combination of a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a long short-term memory (LSTM) architecture. CNN is a widely used technique that automates feature extraction and the classification process. Since the power consumption signature is time-series data, we were led to build a CNN-based LSTM (CNN-LSTM) model for smart grid data classification. In this work, a novel data pre-processing algorithm was also implemented to compute the missing instances in the dataset, based on the local values relative to the missing data point. Furthermore, in this dataset, the count of electricity theft users was relatively low, which could have made the model inefficient at identifying theft users. This class imbalance scenario was addressed through synthetic data generation. Finally, the results obtained indicate the proposed scheme can classify both the majority class (normal users) and the minority class (electricity theft users) with good accuracy.

Breast Cancer is a serious threat and one of the largest causes of death of women throughout the world. The identification of cancer largely depends on digital biomedical photography analysis such as histopathological images by doctors and physicians. Analyzing histopathological images is a nontrivial task, and decisions from investigation of these kinds of images always require specialised knowledge. However, Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) techniques can help the doctor make more reliable decisions. The state-of-the-art Deep Neural Network (DNN) has been recently introduced for biomedical image analysis. Normally each image contains structural and statistical information. This paper classifies a set of biomedical breast cancer images (BreakHis dataset) using novel DNN techniques guided by structural and statistical information derived from the images. Specifically a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), a Long-Short-Term-Memory (LSTM), and a combination of CNN and LSTM are proposed for breast cancer image classification. Softmax and Support Vector Machine (SVM) layers have been used for the decision-making stage after extracting features utilising the proposed novel DNN models. In this experiment the best Accuracy value of 91.00% is achieved on the 200x dataset, the best Precision value 96.00% is achieved on the 40x dataset, and the best F-Measure value is achieved on both the 40x and 100x datasets.

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) refers to the damages endured by the retina as an effect of diabetes. DR has become a severe health concern worldwide, as the number of diabetes patients is soaring uncountably. Periodic eye examination allows doctors to detect DR in patients at an early stage to initiate proper treatments. Advancements in artificial intelligence and camera technology have allowed us to automate the diagnosis of DR, which can benefit millions of patients indeed. This paper inscribes a novel method for DR diagnosis based on the gray-level intensity and texture features extracted from fundus images using a decision tree-based ensemble learning technique. This study primarily works with the Asia Pacific Tele-Ophthalmology Society 2019 Blindness Detection (APTOS 2019 BD) dataset. We undertook several steps to curate its contents to make them more suitable for machine learning applications. Our approach incorporates several image processing techniques, two feature extraction techniques, and one feature selection technique, which results in a classification accuracy of 94.20% (margin of error: ±0.32%) and an F-measure of 93.51% (margin of error: ±0.5%). Several other parameters regarding the proposed method’s performance have been presented to manifest its robustness and reliability. Details on each employed technique have been included to make the provided results reproducible. This method can be a valuable tool for mass retinal screening to detect DR, thus drastically reducing the rate of vision loss attributed to it.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition distinguished by structural and functional changes to the kidney over time. Studies show that 10% of adults worldwide are affected by some kind of CKD, resulting in 1.2 million deaths. Recently, CKD has emerged as a leading cause of mortality worldwide, making it necessary to develop a Computer-Aided Diagnostic (CAD) system to diagnose CKD automatically. Machine Learning (ML) based CAD system can be used by a clinician to automatically diagnoses mass people. Since ML models are considered a black box, it is also necessary to expose influential causes behind a model's prediction of a particular output. So that, a doctor can make a more rational decision based on the model's output and analysis of the features influence on the model. In this paper, we have used the XGBoost as the ML classifier to predict whether a patient has CKD or not. Using the XGBoost classifier, we have obtained an accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score of $$99.16{\%}, 100{\%}, 98.68{\%},$$99.16%,100%,98.68%, and $$99.33{\%},$$99.33%, respectively using all $$24$$24 features. Furthermore, we have used Biogeography Based Optimization (BBO) algorithm to find an effective subset of the features. The BBO algorithm selected almost half of the initial features. We have obtained an accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score of $$98.33{\%}, 100{\%}, 97.36{\%},$$98.33%,100%,97.36%, and $$98.67{\%},$$98.67%, respectively using only 13 features selected by the BBO algorithm. Finally, we have explained the impact of the feature on the ML models using the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis. Using SHAP analysis and BBO algorithm, we have found that hemoglobin and albumin mostly contribute to the detection of CKD.
