Land use and land cover change research has been applied to landslides, erosion, land planning and global change. Based on the CA-Markov model, this study predicts the spatial patterns of land use in 2025 and 2036 based on the dynamic changes in land use patterns using remote sensing and geographic information system. CA-Markov integrates the advantages of cellular automata and Markov chain analysis to predict future land use trends based on studies of land use changes in the past. Based on Landsat 5 TM images from 1992 and 2003 and Landsat 8 OLI images from 2014, this study obtained a land use classification map for each year. Then, the genetic transition probability from 1992 to 2003 was obtained by IDRISI software. Based on the CA-Markov model, a predicted land use map for 2014 was obtained, and it was validated by the actual land use results of 2014 with a Kappa index of 0.8128. Finally, the land use patterns of 2025 and 2036 in Jiangle County were determined. This study can provide suggestions and a basis for urban development planning in Jiangle County.

Accurate estimation of tree position, diameter at breast height (DBH), and tree height measurements is an important task in forest inventory. Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) is an important solution. However, the poor global navigation satellite system (GNSS) coverage under the canopy makes the MLS system unable to provide globally-consistent point cloud data, and thus, it cannot accurately estimate the forest attributes. SLAM could be an alternative for solutions dependent on GNSS. In this paper, a mobile phone with RGB-D SLAM was used to estimate tree position, DBH, and tree height in real-time. The main aims of this paper include (1) designing an algorithm to estimate the DBH and position of the tree using the point cloud from the time-of-flight (TOF) camera and camera pose; (2) designing an algorithm to measure tree height using the perspective projection principle of a camera and the camera pose; and (3) showing the measurement results to the observer using augmented reality (AR) technology to allow the observer to intuitively judge the accuracy of the measurement results and re-estimate the measurement results if needed. The device was tested in nine square plots with 12 m sides. The tree position estimations were unbiased and had a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.12 m in both the x-axis and y-axis directions; the DBH estimations had a 0.33 cm (1.78%) BIAS and a 1.26 cm (6.39%) root mean square error (RMSE); the tree height estimations had a 0.15 m (1.08%) BIAS and a 1.11 m (7.43%) RMSE. The results showed that the mobile phone with RGB-D SLAM is a potential tool for obtaining accurate measurements of tree position, DBH, and tree height.

The importance of the height-diameter (H-D) relationship in forest productivity is well known. The general nonlinear regression model, based on the mean regression technical, is not able to give a complete description of the H-D relationship. This study aims to evaluate the H-D relationship among relative competition levels and develop a quantile regression (QR) model to fully describe the H-D relationship. The dominance index was applied to determine the relative competition levels of trees for the Chinese fir. Based on the basic Weibull growth model, the mean regression for five relative competition levels and 11 QR models was constructed with 10-fold cross-validation. We have demonstrated that the H-D relationship for the Chinese fir strongly correlated with relative competition states, but the five curves from mean regression models did not show a notable difference between the trends of H-D relationship under different competition levels. Similar regression results were found in QR models of the specific quantiles; the average tree height of five competition levels varied between 5.78% and 17.65% (i.e., about 0.06 and 0.18 quantiles). In addition, some special curves of the H-D relationship such as the QR models of the 0.01 and 0.99 quantile showed the H-D relationship under certain conditions. These findings indicate that the QR models not only evaluated the rates of change of the H-D relationships in various competition levels, but also described their characteristics with more information, like the upper and lower boundary of the conditional distribution of responses. Although the flexible QR curves followed the distribution of the data and showed more information about the H-D relationships, the H-D curves may not intersect with each other, even when the trees reached their maximum height. Hence, the QR model requires further practice in assessing the growth trajectory of the tree’s diameter or tree height to gain better results.
