The aim of this paper was to assess groundwater quality in a landfill and waste management site, with special regard to levels of organic pollution indicators: chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and total organic carbon (TOC). Analysis of specific indicators was conducted for piezometers located in the area of the Radiowo landfill, the composting plant and the facilities adjacent to the landfill. The article discusses the temporal and spatial changes of selected organic pollution indicators. Based on the results of groundwater monitoring, several maps of COD, BOD and TOC areal distribution were provided. Statistical distribution of monitoring data was presented using box-and-whisker plots. Pearson’s correlation coefficients between selected pollution indicators were measured with a significance level set at p < 0.01 and p < 0.05. The strongest correlation was observed between BOD and COD. The maximum BOD/COD ratio was observed at the level of 1.561 before the closure of the vertical barrier, whereas, at present, average values of this ratio are below 0.18. The results indicate significant improvement of groundwater quality in the landfill site after the closure of the vertical barrier. In particular, this refers to BOD values, which decreased even 160 times in the 1998–2016 monitoring period.

The use of geotextile filters has been a common application in geo-environmental and geotechnical engineering for decades. The purpose of the present paper is to assess the influence of artificial physical clogging and cyclic water flow on the water permeability characteristics of nonwoven geotextiles used commonly in filter and drainage systems. Despite many studies examining the behavior of soil-geosynthetics, the mechanism of physical clogging is not fully understood yet and remains incompletely defined. Artificial clogging and cyclic water flow tests have been conducted according to a procedure created by the authors. Three nonwoven geotextiles and silty sand were employed in the test series. Hydraulic properties of the tested geosynthetics were determined according to the ISO standard. Filter design criteria are also discussed. The paper also presents the changes of water permeability characteristics due to clogging and cyclic water flow. The results show significant decrease of water permeability coefficients of the tested nonwoven geotextiles after artificial clogging and under cyclic water flow. Furthermore, the clogging mechanism was observed and confirmed by three-dimensional computed tomography.

Various human activities have been the main causes of surface water pollution. The uneven distribution of industrial enterprises in the territories of the main river basins of Ukraine do not always allow the real state of the water quality to be assessed. This article has three purposes: (1) the modification of the Ukrainian method for assessing the WQI, taking into account the level of negative impact of the most dangerous chemical elements, (2) the modeling of WQI assessment using fuzzy logic and (3) the creation of an artificial neural network model for the prediction of the WQI. The fuzzy logic model used four input variables and calculated one output variable (WQI). In the final stage of the study, six ANN models were analyzed, which differed from each other in various loss function optimizers and activation functions. The optimal results were shown using an ANN with the softmax activation function and Adam’s loss function optimizer (MAPE = 9.6%; R2 = 0.964). A comparison of the MAPE and R2 indicators of the created ANN model with other models for assessing water quality showed that the level of agreement between the forecast and target data is satisfactory. The novelty of this study is in the proposal to modify the WQI assessment methodology which is used in Ukraine. At the same time, the phased and joint use of mathematical tools such as the fuzzy logic method and the ANN allow one to effectively evaluate and predict WQI values, respectively.

Geosynthetics have been commonly used for the construction of civil engineering structures such as retaining wall, road and railways, coastal protection, soft ground improvement work, and landfill systems since the 1960s. In the past 40 years, the development of polymer materials has helped to prolong the life of geosynthetics. In terms of the practical use of geosynthetics, engineers must understand their appropriate application. The first part of this paper provides a basic description of geosynthetics, including their types, components, and functions. The second part deals with the geosynthetics used as filters. This part briefly presents the mechanism of filtration, the factors affecting the durability of geotextile filters, design concepts, laboratory tests, and case studies. The third part of the study covers the use of geosynthetics for stabilisation. Its mechanism was explained separately for geogrids and for geocells. Several examples of applications with geosynthetics intended for the stabilisation function are described in the last part of this paper.

During the past four decades the use of nonwoven geotextiles as filter materials in geotechnical works has experienced a marked increase. In this study, the water permeability coefficient of nonwoven geotextiles after 23 years of exploitation in drainage system was determined to evaluate the influence of physical clogging on filtration performance of geotextiles. The obtained results showed that the geotextiles were clogged by soil particles. What is more, the objective in this study was to establish a gradient ratio test method for estimating a clogging phenomenon of geotextile filter adequately. A series of gradient ratio tests on three kinds of needle-punched nonwoven geotextile filters whose number of constrictions differs was performed. A geotextile filter was put under a silty sand layer. Based on the test results, it was confirmed that the water permeability coefficient became small as the gradient ratio increased, depending on the number of constrictions of the geotextile. It was also found that the modified gradient ratio GR4 is more sensitive than GR8 and GR25. Based on interpretation of the experimental results, the authors recommend the acceptance limit of GR8 equal to 3.7 and of GR4 equal to 4.8.

Among the various types of polymeric materials, geosynthetics deserve special attention. A geosynthetic is a product made from synthetic polymers that is embedded in soils for various purposes. There are some basic functions of geosynthetics, namely, erosion control, filtration, drainage, separation, reinforcement, containment, barrier, and protection. Geosynthetics for erosion control are very effective in preventing or limiting soil loss by water erosion on slopes or river/channel banks. Where the current line runs through the undercut area of the slope, the curvature of the arch is increased. If this phenomenon is undesirable, the meander arch should be protected from erosion processes. The combination of geosynthetics provides the best resistance to erosion. In addition to external erosion, internal erosion of soils is also a negative phenomenon. Internal erosion refers to any process by which soil particles are eroded from within or beneath a water-retaining structure. Geosynthetics, particularly geotextiles, are used to prevent internal erosion of soils in contact with the filters. Therefore, the main objective of this review paper is to address the many ways in which geosynthetics are used for erosion control (internal and external). Many examples of hydrotechnical and civil engineering applications of geosynthetics will be presented.
