Soft machines typically exhibit slow locomotion speed and low manipulation strength because of intrinsic limitations of soft materials. Here, we present a generic design principle that harnesses mechanical instability for a variety of spine-inspired fast and strong soft machines. Unlike most current soft robots that are designed as inherently and unimodally stable, our design leverages tunable snap-through bistability to fully explore the ability of soft robots to rapidly store and release energy within tens of milliseconds. We demonstrate this generic design principle with three high-performance soft machines: High-speed cheetah-like galloping crawlers with locomotion speeds of 2.68 body length/s, high-speed underwater swimmers (0.78 body length/s), and tunable low-to-high-force soft grippers with over 1 to 103 stiffness modulation (maximum load capacity is 11.4 kg). Our study establishes a new generic design paradigm of next-generation high-performance soft robots that are applicable for multifunctionality, different actuation methods, and materials at multiscales.

Wireless small-scale soft-bodied devices are capable of precise operation inside confined internal spaces, enabling various minimally invasive medical applications. However, such potential is constrained by the small output force and low work capacity of the current miniature soft actuators. To address this challenge, we report a small-scale soft actuator that harnesses the synergetic interactions between the coiled artificial muscle and radio frequency–magnetic heating. This wirelessly controlled actuator exhibits a large output force (~3.1 N) and high work capacity (3.5 J/g). Combining this actuator with different mechanical designs, its tensile and torsional behaviors can be engineered into different functional devices, such as a suture device, a pair of scissors, a driller, and a clamper. In addition, by assuming a spatially varying magnetization profile, a multilinked coiled muscle can have both magnetic field–induced bending and high contractile force. Such an approach could be used in various future untethered miniature medical devices.

Flapping electromagnetic-reed generators are investigated to harvest wind energy, even at low cutoff wind speeds. Power electronic interfaces are intended to address ac-dc conversion and power conditioning for single- or multiple-channel systems. However, the generated voltage of each generator reed at low wind speed is usually below the threshold voltage of power electronic semiconductor devices, increasing the difficulty and inefficiency of rectification, particularly at relatively low output powers. This paper proposes a multiinput bridgeless resonant ac-dc converter to achieve ac-dc conversion, step-up voltage and match optimal impedance for a multichannel electromagnetic energy harvesting system. Alternating voltage of each generator is stepped up through the switching LC network and then rectified by a freewheeling diode. Its resonant operation enhances efficiency and enables miniaturization through high frequency switching. The optimal electrical impedance can be adjusted through resonance impedance matching and pulse-frequency-modulation control. A 5 cm × 3 cm, six-input standalone prototype is fabricated to address power conditioning for a six-channel wind panel.

Mechanical forces are emerging physical cues that regulate biochemical signals of immune cells for antitumor immunity. Owing to the lack of precise tools to impose intracellular forces, little is known about whether and how organelle-level forces trigger mechanotransduction for antitumor immunity. Here, we developed a magneto-mechanical force-triggered lysosomal membrane permeabilization (MagLMP) strategy to induce durable macrophage repolarization for in vivo applications. Self-assembled magnetic nanomotors are driven by rotational magnetic fields, facilitating dynamic damage to the lysosomal membrane by a finely tuned torque-induced vortex. Intriguingly, galectin 9 (Gal9) was found to be critical for sensing cyclic MagLMP, which dynamically activated AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), enhanced activation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), and induced metabolic alterations for sustained M1-like macrophage repolarization, followed by mounting of antitumor immunity. Through single-cell RNA sequencing of tumor tissues, as well as macrophage depletion-reconstitution models involving intratumoral transfer of Gal9 -KO bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) and AMPK shRNA-transduced Gal9 -KO BMDMs, we confirmed the Gal9-AMPK-NF-κB axis as the essential pathway by which MagLMP functions in antitumor therapy. In a mouse model of lung adenocarcinoma in situ, overall survival was extended after intravenous administration of nanomotors followed by cyclic MagLMP, and one third of mice survived for more than 300 days. Together, these results demonstrate an intracellular mechanical strategy that can dynamically manipulate innate immune responses in vivo, providing a tool for durable immunotherapy through organelle mechanotransduction.

Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases remain major global health challenges. Minimally invasive endovascular interventions have become preferred treatments due to reduced trauma, pain, and recovery time. However, the advancement of endovascular interventional robotic systems (EIRSs) is constrained by limited imaging depth, heavy dependence on physician experience, and restricted device maneuverability. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the sensing, control, and execution modules that form the core of these EIRSs. It analyzes the fundamental challenges within each component and explores potential strategies to enhance system intelligence and autonomy. By integrating current progress with forward-looking insights, the review highlights pathways toward safer, more efficient, and greater autonomous robotic interventions. The ultimate aim is to advance the development of next-generation robotic platforms that can improve procedural precision and broaden patient access to high-quality vascular care.
